Bookmaker’s Corner: Taking the Good with the Bad in the NFL
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 10/13/2009

St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger.

You have to know that bettors are thoroughly enjoying the play they’re getting from Peyton Manning and the boys over in Indianapolis. The Colts started the season with a tight 14-12 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, failing to cover a 6.5-point spread at home. The Colts have covered four straight spreads, so over at Bodog Sportsbook we’re happy to see them sit out this week.

Indianapolis destroyed Tennessee 31-9 on Sunday and the majority of bettors made out extremely well at Bodog. We even moved the line from Indy -3.5 to -4.5 and failed to get much buyback on the home underdog Titans, a team that bettors have no doubt grown tired of by now.

Manning has thrown for 300 yards in all five of his outings, with 12 touchdowns to just four interceptions. Did someone turn the time machine back to 2005 on this guy?

Look for another huge spread when the Colts return to action in two weeks when they face the St. Louis Rams. The Rams have been outscored by a 146-34 margin and are 1-4 against the spread, their only victory against the number coming against the Redskins (9-7 loss) in Week 2.

For as bad as Week 5 in the NFL may have been for us, we did a score a big win as the Denver Broncos took out the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions scored late to cover the spread versus the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It’ll be interesting to see if bettors can finally get comfortable backing Kyle Orton, who leads the Broncos into San Diego for Monday Night Football in Week 6.

We’ll also be keeping a keen eye on the money coming in on the New England Patriots at Tennessee Titans matchup. As the Titans’ downward spiral continues, the Patriots will be looking to make up for a game they let slip away in Denver. This one could be Bad with a capital “B” for Brady but we’ll still try to give underdog bettors reason to play.

I will be posting weekly articles including betting previews, matchups and the inside scoop from a bookmakers point of view right here at Doc's Sports.  Read my past articles - Click Here, and learn more about Bodog sportsbook - click here.
