Bowl Game Trends
by SPORTSBETTING.COM - 12/29/2009

Jacory Harris, QB for the Miami Hurricanes.

The 2009 year is waning and the college football bowl games continue to come fast and furious.

Friday will see the start of the BCS bowls but there are some notable games being played over the next few days.

CHAMPS Sports Bowl
The Miami Hurricanes were barely a blip on the radar when the college football preseason polls were released but they rose from the ashes in 2009.

After going 7-6 straight up last season, the “U” finished this past regular season with records of 9-3 SU and 6-5 against the spread and were ranked 15 in the final BCS standings.

Online sportsbooks have been seeing a lot of attention from bettors on the ‘Canes in the CHAMPS Sports Bowl vs. the No. 25 Wisconsin Badgers. SPORTSBETTING.com has Miami favored by 4-points with an Over/Under of 58.5. They are reporting 75% of all the betting volume has come in on the Hurricanes.

Some trends worth noting on the CHAMPS Sports Bowl include:

 - Miami is 2-5 ATS in their last seven games played in December.
 - The last eight times the Hurricanes have been favored by 4-points or less, they have produced a record of 2 Overs and 6 Unders.
 - Wisconsin has a record of 3 Overs and 7 Unders the last 10 times they have been an underdog of 4-points or less.

Pacific Life Holiday Bowl

The No. 22 Nebraska Cornhuskers nearly defeated the No. 2 Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 conference championship back in early-December.

Nebraska lost that game 13-12 but covered as a 14-point underdog.

As a result, the Longhorns will play for the national title in a few weeks and the ‘Huskers will play the No. 20 Arizona Wildcats in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl on Wednesday. Online sportsbooks have the Huskers favored by 1-point with the Total set at 40.

Some NCAA Bowl trends worth noting on this matchup:
 - In Nebraska’s last 20 games, they boast a 15-5 straight up record, with a profitable 12-8 ATS run over that span.
 - In Arizona’s last six games played in December, they are 5-1 straight up and 5-1 ATS.
 - The last 10 times Arizona has been listed as an underdog, they have covered the spread eight times.
 - Nebraska has a record of 3 Overs and 9 Unders in their last 12 games.

Brut Sun Bowl

Come New Year’s Eve, both the Oklahoma Sooners and the No. 21 Stanford Cardinal will be looking to prove critics wrong in the Brut Sun Bowl — Oklahoma is a 10-point fave and the O/U is at 55.

Ranked No. 3 by both the AP and USA Today polls during the preseason, the Sooners not only lost 14-13 in their first game of the season to BYU, but also lost 2008 Heisman Trophy winner and starting QB Sam Bradford with a sprained shoulder.

Bradford would return, only to re-injure his shoulder and the Sooners, who played in the BCS title game a year ago, would go on to finish the season 7-5 SU, a far cry from last year’s pre-BCS championship record of 12-1 (SU).

Stanford RB Toby Gerhart would probably like to stick it to the critics as well, particularly those who voted on a certain trophy a few weeks ago.

Gerhart led the nation in rushing TDs with 26 and was third in rushing with 1,736 yards but was runner-up to Alabama RB Mark Ingram for the Heisman Trophy.

 - Oklahoma has a record of 7-2 ATS in their last nine games in the month of December.
 - The Sooners are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 when favored by more than 8-points.
 - Stanford has a record of 6 Overs and no unders the last six times they have been an underdog of more than +8.

Enjoy the last week of 2009 and all the college football games that come with it.
