College Basketball Betting: Teams Better Than Expected
by Trevor Whenham - 12/21/2010

Conference play is about to get under way in college basketball, and the calendar is about to turn. That means that while we don’t know everything about teams and there will still be a ton of surprises between now and early April when the nets are cut down, we do have a much better sense of how good or bad teams are.

College Basketball Picks: USC at Kansas Odds and Betting Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 12/17/2010

So why did I pick USC at Kansas as the game of the day in college basketball on Saturday over, say, Kansas State-Florida or Texas-North Carolina? Not so much for the game itself, as the Jayhawks most certainly will win. But it’s because this is the debut of possibly the best freshman in the land in Josh Selby for KU.

College Basketball Picks: Odds and Predictions for Marquee Saturday Games
by Robert Ferringo - 12/10/2010

Below are some odds and predictions for marquee Saturday games. It is also a list of what you should be watching for seven hours on Saturday if, you know, you don’t have any family or friends, are a raging gambling addict like myself, and would rather spend your day making college basketball picks than trolling the mall looking for a (robot) baby that acts just like own baby:

College Basketball Picks: Jimmy V Classic Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 12/7/2010

We have a terrific quartet of teams for this year’s Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden as No. 4 Kansas faces No. 13 Memphis in the opener and No. 7 Michigan State faces No. 8 Syracuse in the nightcap. Certainly it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see one or more of these teams in the Final Four this spring.

College Basketball Betting: The Surprises
by Trevor Whenham - 11/26/2010

We’re only a few games into the college basketball season, but already some teams have been far less than we expected them to be, and others have far exceeded expectations. All this is just proof of what smart college basketball handicappers should already know - predicting what 18-21 year olds are going to perform like under pressure is an inexact science at best.

College Basketball Power Rankings - The Conferences
by Trevor Whenham - 11/24/2010

I'm a die hard sports fan. Like most people with the same disease, I love rankings. You put anything into order and the world becomes a better place immediately - no matter wow meaningless the rankings really are. With that spirit in mind I want to set out to rank the six major conferences in college basketball at this early point in the season:

College Basketball Picks: Maui Invitational Odds and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 11/19/2010

The tournament is regularly able to convince top teams to travel to Hawaii, and this year is no exception. Michigan State, Kentucky, and UConn have 11 National Championships between them. Oklahoma, Washington, and Virginia are feisty squads. Wichita State is a scrappy mid-major always looking for chances to earn respect. Chaminade is the host, so it would be rude to say anything unkind to them.

College Basketball Picks: Illinois vs. Texas Betting Odds and Predictions
by Robert Ferringo - 11/18/2010

Tournaments are the defining characteristic of college basketball success. Of course, the conference and NCAA tournaments at the bedrock of March Madness are the most renowned and revered of the college basketball tournaments. However, if you want a good indicator of who is game to run the table in the tournaments in March, it helps to keep an eye on the tournaments in November.

College Basketball Betting: Overrated Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 11/10/2010

Every year when the preseason college basketball polls come out there are a few teams that inevitably end up ranked higher than they probably deserve to be. It’s not that they may not end up where they are ranked, or that they aren’t good teams. It’s just that people give a lot of teams more credit than they deserve because of the names on their jersey. Here are three teams that are, at this point, overrated. What this proves more than anything else is just how ridiculous and meaningless preseason rankings are.

Big East College Basketball Picks With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/9/2010

The Big East has been a 16-team behemoth over the last few seasons and is college basketball’s mega-conference. It’s the only conference whose odds include a wager on “The Field,” and the league’s setup mirrors its preferred style of play: menacing, overwhelming, deep, and physical. But quantity doesn’t always mean quality and mediocrity abounds in this league this season.

SEC College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/9/2010

As far as college basketball conferences go – the SEC sure is great at football. The SEC has left something to be desired on the college hoops scene over the course of the past several years. Perhaps, not coincidentally, the SEC’s slide to the bottom of the BCS-conference hoops ladder has occurred while the South’s football programs have taken a stranglehold on the college football landscape

College Basketball Odds: High-Value Teams for Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 11/9/2010

As we head into the new college basketball season, everyone is looking for the teams that they will be able to trust to deliver them consistent profits against the college basketball lines over the course of the season. One way that teams can pad your bankroll is by being better than people expect them to be. Here are four teams that seem to me to be underrated at the brink of the start of the season – teams that could be betting sensations:

College Basketball: Georgetown Hoyas Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/9/2010

The Georgetown Hoyas were inconsistent last year, and that came back to bite them in the NCAA Tournament. Despite earning a No. 3 seed in the Big Dance, the Hoyas were upset by the Ohio Bobcats in the first round. Coach John Thompson III expects a lot from his team, and the way they finished last year was definitely a disappointment. Thompson will clearly be looking for some more consistent play from this talented team in the season ahead.

College Basketball: San Diego State Aztecs Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/8/2010

Steve Fisher has done a great job building up the program at San Diego State over the last few years. The Aztecs have flown under the radar a bit in the Mountain West Conference, but they have been solid every year. Last year the team finished with a 25-9 record and made it into the NCAA Tournament. The Aztecs lost a hard-fought battle with Tennessee in the first round, but this year’s team has the potential to be even better than the 2009-10 team. Look for Fisher’s veteran team to do some major damage this season.

ACC College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/8/2010

The Boys on Tobacco Road have to be feeling pretty good about themselves as we head into another college basketball season. One of their spawn, the Duke Blue Devils, is the reigning college basketball champion. That is now back-to-back title winners for the ACC and over the course of the past decade this league has produced five of the last 10 winners of the March Madness brackets. Surely that is the perfect symbol of this league’s dominance on the college basketball landscape.

Big 12 College Basketball Picks With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/8/2010

A team from Kansas is the consensus preseason No. 1 in this league, which is no different than just about any other year. To say that’s a significant change is an understatement.

Pac-10 College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/3/2010

Big Ten College Basketball Predictions With Projected Order of Finish and NCAA Bids
by Robert Ferringo - 11/2/2010

For years and years I have been screaming about how overrated and unproductive Big Ten basketball has been on the national scene. Texas Longhorns College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/2/2010

The Texas Longhorns may have been the most disappointing team in all of college basketball last year. On Jan. 16 of last season, this team was ranked first in the country and had a flawless 17-0 record. They would then proceed to lose 10 of their last 17 games and finish at 24-10. The Longhorns lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Wake Forest.

Kentucky Wildcats College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 11/2/2010

The Kentucky Wildcats were a top seed in last year’s NCAA Tournament thanks to their terrific freshman class. However, most of their stars have already moved on to the NBA. John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins made their one year in college special, but now the school is left with the tough task of replacing them. There was certainly some disappointment when the Wildcats were beaten by West Virginia last year, but Kentucky had a terrific season overall. John Calipari was rumored to be leaving for an NBA coaching job, but he is still here to guide this basketball team in 2010-11.

2010-11 Florida Gators College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/1/2010

The Florida Gators returned to the NCAA Tournament last season – losing to BYU in the first round -- after a two-year absence followed those back-to-back National Championships. And with all five starters back this year’s team should be the best in Gainesville since Joakim Noah, Al Horford and Co. left. Of course, coach Billy Donovan also left following the repeat, albeit only briefly, to the Orlando Magic.

2010-11 Kansas Jayhawks College Basketball Predictions with Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 10/30/2010

Going into the NCAA Tournament last year, Kansas was the heavy favorite to win it all. People around the country were putting Kansas on the final line in their March Madness brackets office pools. The Jayhawks cruised through the first round, but Northern Iowa stunned them in the second round. The upset was the biggest of the tournament, and one of the biggest in the last few years.

College Basketball Predictions: Gonzaga Bulldogs Futures Odds and Betting Picks
by Aaron Smith - 10/28/2010

The 2009-10 season was supposed to be when Gonzaga was in rebuilding mode. Mark Few and the Bulldogs weren’t even expected to win the West Coast Conference. College Basketball Picks: Washington Huskies Predictions with Futures Odds
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 10/27/2010

The rollercoaster ride that was the Washington Huskies 2009-10 season started with lofty preseason expectations and ended with a surprise run to the Sweet 16. What happened in between is anyone’s guess. The Huskies, a pick to contend for the conference crown, started Pac-10 play 1-3 and later 3-5. They got back on track and eventually closed the regular season with four consecutive wins, but remained a ‘bubble’ team heading into the conference tournament.

College Basketball Predictions: Butler Bulldogs Futures Odds and Betting Preview
by Trevor Whenham - 10/27/2010

I’m not sure if other coaches envy Butler Coach Brad Stevens or pity him. Probably a little of both. Stevens looks like he is about 12 years old, but he has already led his team closer to a National Championship - one missed shot by Gordon Hayward - than any other mid-major coach has come. That’s definitely something to envy.

College Basketball Picks: Duke Blue Devils Predictions with Futures Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/26/2010

I hate Duke. Always have. Still, it’s hard to have anything but begrudging respect for what Coach K has done with this program. Last year he changed his approach to suit his personnel - something he does better than anyone - and built a team that just kept getting better as the season went along before peaking at exactly the right time. Now he will be changing his playing style radically again, but this time he won’t be sneaking up on anyone - the Blue Devils are the favorites and the ones wit the targets on their back.

Hope is running wild in the Manhattan that isn’t in New York. Kansas State won 29 games last year and made a run to the Elite Eight. That was an impressive season, but if they were to replicate it this year it would be a disappointment. College Basketball Picks: North Carolina Tar Heels Predictions with Futures Odds

Basketball Props Predictions: Where Will Izzo Coach in 2010-11?
by Alan Matthews - 6/7/2010

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert obviously cares more about his NBA franchise than he does his alma mater because Gilbert is trying to lure Coach Tom Izzo away from Michigan State. College Basketball Handicapping: Pac-10 Tournament Preview
by Matt Severance - 3/9/2010

This year’s Pac-10 Tournament should in a way be more fascinating than any in recent memory because it’s basically in the same boat as, say, the Horizon League or Sun Belt (or pick your mid-major conference) in that only the Pac-10 winner might reach the NCAA Tournament. That’s how down the conference is this season – it ranks eighth in conference RPI behind the five other BCS conference as well as the Atlantic 10 and Mountain West.

The Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament will be one of the more closely watched tourneys in the country this week as bubble teams from the major conferences sit around and sweat out how fellow bubblers Charlotte, Dayton and Rhode Island perform in Atlantic City this week. The NCAA Tournament is so close that we can almost taste it. Before we can enjoy the perfect madness of March, though, we have to get through the rest of the conference tournaments, including all of the major conference tournaments. With the obvious exception of the Pac-10, where there doesn't seem to be any good teams, those major conference tournaments aren't likely to significantly change the perceptions of the teams at the top of the conferences - though they will settle some big bubble questions.

In the world of college basketball betting, there is a little bit less public information to go off of than there is in the NBA. College Basketball Handicapping: Senior Night
by Robert Ferringo - 2/23/2010

Every college team celebrates a Senior Night, generally as the last home game of the season. It’s a chance for the guys playing in their final game in their own gym to say thanks to the fans, parade out their awkward parents, get a little love from the hoops community, and then go out and play with the abandon of someone who sees that The End is near. College Basketball Handicapping: Surprising Bubble Teams
by Robert Ferringo - 2/23/2010

Keeping your finger on the pulse of the college basketball betting landscape this time of year is a dizzying exercise. With all of the talk of bubbles, brackets, and Bob Knight it’s tough to keep track of who is streaking and peaking and who is crashing and not cashing.

College Basketball Betting: Weekday Primer
by Matt Severance - 2/22/2010

Hard as it is to believe this is the final week of February, which means that some of the small conference tournaments already will be tipping off next week. With that said, it means some bubble teams are running out of time to add to their resume. Here’s the most intriguing matchup each night this week (nothing worth watching on Friday). I’ll be back with a Game of the Day preview on Saturday.

College Basketball Handicapping: Biggest Home/Road Differentials
by Aaron Smith - 2/18/2010

In the world of college basketball betting, following the key trends and being able to stay ahead of the oddsmakers is absolutely crucial to profiting. Mental toughness is essential in basketball, and there are huge variations in the amount of mental toughness different teams have, especially when the players are only 20 years old, on average. In the NBA, it is typically difficult to find single teams that are far better against the spread at home or away, but that is definitely not the case in college basketball.

College Basketball Handicapping: Bracket Buster Betting Trends
by Robert Ferringo - 2/18/2010

I've analyzed the last five years of the mid-February mid-major hoops orgy known as Bracket Buster Weekend to see if I could establish any useful betting angles or trends. Instead of working over every single "official" Bracket Buster game I squared my focus on the ones that featuring the mid-major conferences that were routinely wagered upon.

NCAA Hoops Betting: Under the Radar
by Christopher G. Shepard - 2/18/2010

There is nothing better in college hoops than investing in an under-the-radar team that you have been locked onto when that team upsets a national power; this week Mizzou beat No. 12 Texas, 82-77, and Rutgers upset No. 8 Georgetown, 71-68. First you have to find theses teams that are flying under the radar. This week here are three teams that I think will bring positive income for NCAA hoops bettors.

College Basketball Betting: Weekday Primer
by Matt Severance - 2/15/2010

Coach Jim Calhoun’s return from a medical leave couldn’t stop UConn’s tailspin from continuing Saturday, as the Huskies lost for the fifth time in their past six games. At 14-11 and 4-8 in the Big East, that makes tonight’s game at Villanova almost a must-win for UConn to have a prayer of an at-large NCAA Tournament bid. Nova leads the Big East and has won two straight since its lone conference loss (to Georgetown).

Saturday NCAA Game of the Day: Tennessee at Kentucky
by Matt Severance - 2/12/2010

Kentucky point guard John Wall gets all the hype as not only the nation’s top freshman, but also the potential National Player of the Year and likely No. 1 overall pick in next year’s NBA Draft. But right now, Wall’s not even the best freshman on his own team.

College Basketball Handicapping: Go Against Public Teams for Profit
by Aaron Smith - 2/11/2010

In the world of college basketball handicapping it’s all about finding an edge over other sports bettors and the oddsmakers. Kangaroos have no natural enemies. But the St. Mary’s basketball team certainly does. St. Mary’s heads to Gonzaga at 11 p.m. on Thursday night to play in one of the burgeoning mid-major rivalries in the country. The visiting Gaels have been instilled as six-point underdog and the total is set at a healthy 152.0.

College Basketball Handicapping: Motivated Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 2/9/2010

This time of year always sneaks up on me. As soon as the Super Bowl ends we are right into the do-or-die period of the college basketball season. A few lucky teams have already secured their spot in the tournament, but many more still have some work left to do before they can dance. Teams poised on the bubble, provided they are moving in the right direction, can be very useful for bettors because they will be particularly motivated to put their best efforts forward.

College Basketball Handicapping: Correlation Between Offensive Stats and ATS Success
by Trevor Whenham - 2/5/2010

Let's avoid the lengthy preamble this time around. What I wanted to do this time is look at the relationship between several different common offensive statistics and against-the-spread performance in college basketball. We're going to look at the top five teams in five different statistical categories to see how they stack up ATS. Nothing may come of it, but then again something interesting may be learned.

Saturday College Basketball Preview: Kansas at Kansas State
by Robert Ferringo - 1/29/2010

On Jan. 18 the Wildcats welcomed the No. 1 team in the country, Texas, into a raucous atmosphere in Manhattan. Kansas State overpowered the Longhorns to knock off the top team in the land. Now, on Saturday, they welcome the No. 1 team-in-wait, in-state rival Kansas, and are looking to take down another one of the best teams in the country.

College Basketball Handicapping: Kentucky Not Worthy of No. 1 Ranking
by Robert Ferringo - 1/26/2010

Right now Kentucky reminds me of a little kid trying on his dad’s clothes and shoes as kind of a joke. As of Monday the Wildcats were the No. 1 team in the country in college basketball. I have been banging against the Kentucky bandwagon all season long and I’m hear to tell you once again that they aren’t the best team in the country. Not even close. They are good. They are better than I thought they would be.

Syracuse Stacks Up Well With Classic Florida Teams
by Robert Ferringo - 1/26/2010

Obviously, I’m feeling pretty good about Syracuse right now. I think that they are the best team in the country right now and that’s coming from a guy that is always quick to take a pessimistic stance on his alma mater. The reason that I think that they are the best team and, right now, the favorite to win the National Championship, is that I think that they have every single aspect covered that a championship team needs.

Saturday College Basketball Preview: Texas at Connecticut
by Matt Severance - 1/21/2010

UConn seemed to fix a lot that was wrong during the skid, as it made 6-of-14 three-pointers after hitting only 6-of-28 during the three-game losing streak as well as 11-of-12 free throws after shooting just 59 percent from the line during the previous three games. UConn made 56.9 percent of its shots overall and 65.4 percent in the second half. Interim coach George Blaney started a three-guard lineup against the Red Storm and may again Saturday – Blaney is 5-3 in games in which he has subbed for Calhoun.

College Basketball Handicapping: Struggling Programs
by Trevor Whenham - 1/22/2010

One of the trends that has emerged so far this year in college basketball is the underachievement of big-name programs. In some cases, teams that we have grown to expect consistent excellence from have struggled. In others, teams that came into the season with high hopes have found ways of disappointing us during the season. Here's a look at three teams that fit into each category, and what that means from a betting perspective:

While public teams like Syracuse 18-1 SU (+870 ATS) and Villanova 17-1 SU (+860 ATS) are among the best cashing teams in NCAA basketball, in my opinion it is the non-public teams with losing records that bring more value for your sports investment V-Chips and this week I have uncovered a few such teams that meet this criteria.

College Basketball Handicapping: Mississippi at Tennessee Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 1/15/2010

The Tennessee Volunteers entered the season as a Final Four sleeper and through December, in my opinion, they were casting the largest shadow in the SEC. But, as I’m sure you’ve heard (and if you haven’t, politely move along), that’s when half of the Vols roster started acting out their own scene from “The Wire”. But instead of earning Emmy’s, the four players – Tyler Smith, Cameron Tatum, Brian Williams and Melvin Goins – left the Vols with an empty bench and almost no shot at postseason glory.

Saturday NCAA Game of the Day: Syracuse at West Virginia
by Matt Severance - 1/15/2010

Well, hopefully we’ve found something here with the Saturday NCAA Game of the Day feature, as I recommended taking Wisconsin last week against Purdue – and of course the Badgers knocked the Boilermakers from the ranks of the unbeaten. Honestly, I rarely will recommend a total because I think those are too unpredictable (and those bets account for maybe 10 percent of a book’s action), but let’s make it 2-0 this week on the side.

While the debate rages on about which team should be the No. 1 team in men’s college basketball the No. 1 team for sports bettors is obvious: St. Mary’s. College Basketball Handicapping: Injuries Not Always Cut and Dry
by Robert Ferringo - 1/12/2010

Injuries to key players in sports aren’t always what they seem. In NBA it’s been a widely held maxim to always bet on a team that just lost its best player to injury. (Milwaukee covered at Phoenix this week right after losing Michael Redd for the season. That’s just the latest in a long line of examples.) And if you’ve been following the rise of the Volunteers over the last week it would appear that it holds up in college hoops as well.

College Basketball Betting: Connecticut at Georgetown Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 1/8/2010

If you threw the numbers "13" and "12" at me in regards to Connecticut and Georgetown basketball this year my Jeopardy-style response would have been, "What is the number of losses that each team has this year?" Nope. The numbers "13" and "12" are the respective rankings for the Huskies and the Hoyas as they enter their marquee matchup at noon on Saturday at Georgetown. Somehow these two teams, despite significant personnel losses in the offseason, have managed to work their way into the Top 15.

NCAA Hoops Betting: Under the Radar
by Christopher G. Shepard - 1/7/2010

As the NCAA nightly basketball lottery teaches us this New Year has not been a good time to back marquee favorites like UNC, Texas, and Boston College.
