The playoff races appear to be a little anticlimactic with the exception of the Bulls and Raptors fighting for the chance to be rushed out of the playoffs in the first round by the Cavaliers. There are already 11 teams eliminated, leaving only three teams with a chance to get into the top eight of their conference. Last week's ranking in parentheses and teams eliminated from the postseason are denoted with an asterisk.

The All-Star Game and the NBA Trade Deadline have come and gone. Most of the moves made at the trade deadline are for positioning in the offseason, which is unfortunate for the NBA, but some teams up top, most notably the Cavaliers, made moves to boost championship hopes this year.

It was a combination of their recent 10-game winning streak that including a thorough thumping of the Heat on Thursday night and their 2-0 record against the Lakers that have finally given the Cavs the top peg in our NBA Power Rankings. With a steady diet of cupcakes coming up, mostly at home, do not be surprised to see this winning streak reach 15.

It is mid-January and that means most of the NBA talk focuses to All-Star controversy about who will compete in the dunk contest, who is "injured" and will have to miss the game, not to mention which players are getting snubbed by the fan voting. But we still have plenty of meaningful games going on and surprisingly tight playoff races.

With the first NBA power rankings of the new decade not much has changed since 2009. The rich are getting richer in the NBA and the poor are getting poorer. When is having Christmas Day off a bad thing? When you are in the NBA. The association puts their best of the best (or at least tries too) on Christmas Day, while the rest of the NBA gets to sit at home and watch the teams they are trying to chase. About two weeks away from the halfway point in the season, eight of the 10 teams playing have winning records and four have 20-plus wins.

The third edition of NBA Power Rankings in the sixth week of the season and finally the rankings are starting to resemble a lot of people's NBA preseason rankings. There are few surprises at the top. Maybe the bad beats, injuries and good bounces finally evened out and the top teams taken their rightful places or maybe this is the calm before the midseason NBA storm.

A logjam has formed atop the NBA. For once there is no one team running away with things (unless you're looking at the bottom and it's clear the Nets are running away with the crown for worst team in the NBA). Instead we have eight teams atop the Power Rankings that are all capable of making a run to the NBA Finals. Offseason front runners Cleveland and the LA Lakers are joined in the pack by early-season surprises, Atlanta and Dallas.

We are more than two weeks into the season and about seven games in the books for most teams, the 2009-10 NBA season is underway and we have some expected front runners and some unexpected front runners. There have been some early-season surprises (Cavaliers losing twice at home and the Suns 5-1 on the road) and some things everyone expected (the Knicks and Nets combined to start 1-14).
