Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/30/2010

H – Hillis, Peyton. Before their Week 15 AFC North clash, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis called out Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis. After Hillis gouged the Baltimore defense for 144 yards In Week 3, Lewis said that “a blind cat will find a meal every once in a while.” Lewis and the Baltimore defense backed up on the talk on Sunday when they held Hillis to 35 yards on 12 carries.

Forward Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/24/2010

A – Artest, Ron. On a recent appearance on “Pardon the Interruption,” Lakers forward Ron Artest was asked if he wanted to play in the NFL. Artest gave his usual head-scratching/hilarious response, “We only live once, if I’m not mistaken.”

USA swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Amanda Beard

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/16/2010

A – Amanda Beard. The former Olympic gold medal swimmer revealed all in Playboy a few years ago, and now she is ready to reveal all again in an upcoming tell-all book. Beard says it will reveal her struggle with drugs, alcohol and eating disorders. Beard competed in the Atlanta games at the age of 14 when she famously walked around the pool clutching a teddy bear. She won gold and two silvers that year and captured the hearts of most Americans.

Florida Gators Head Coach Urban Meyer

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/8/2010

F – Florida Football. For the second consecutive December, Florida football Coach Urban Meyer has announced his retirement. Last December he changed his mind after 24 hours. He may still do so this time, but it looks like Meyer is serious. He says he will stay on to coach Florida through the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida on New Year’s Day. The Gators are seven-point favorites against Penn State, according to college football odds.

Auburn QB Cam Newton

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 12/2/2010

A – Auburn. The rollercoaster ride to a National Championship continues for Auburn amidst near losses, comeback wins and Cam Newton allegations. One thing is sure though, that American loves watching. Newton is the first player in college football history to garner breaking news just by being ruled eligible. Auburn’s 24-point rally against Alabama in the Iron Bowl garnered the highest rating for a college football game this season. During the game a quick-thinking Alabama employee decided to play the Steve Miller Band’s, “Take the Money and Run,” a clear reference to allegations about Newton accepting money.

Miami Heat Big Three

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/24/2010

A – American Airlines Arena Happy Hour. When the Miami Heat brought together Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, they fired their ticket sales staff the very next day. Now with the Heat sitting at 8-6 and mired in a slump, there are empty seats at American Airlines Arena and the promotions staff is hard at work concocting up an arena “Heat Happy Hour.” There is a new marketing campaign encouraging fans to “Fan Up,” aka come early and stay the entire game. Heat fans have been doing neither.

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/19/2010

Last week was close to a total disaster for the Public Action Report. Only a decent showing in a losing effort by Arizona State saved us from a complete shutout. It’s a long season, though, so these things are bound to happen. This week we have no NFL games that fit out criteria, but a whole mess of college games that do.

LA Clippers Center Chris Kaman.

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/18/2010

L – Los Angeles Basketball. The Lakers and Clippers share the same arena and division, but the similarities stop there. The Lakers (9-2) and Clippers (1-10) are worlds apart in terms of results and talent. The Lakers at 2/1 are the favorite to win the NBA Finals while the Clippers at 250/1 are the third-biggest longshot.

Fourth Down and Inches – Football Predictions Report
by Doc - 11/16/2010

Our selection service continues to roll, as we went 9-1 this week picking up +38 units. This allowed $100 bettors to show a profit of $3,760. Our only loss on the weekend was with Georgia over Auburn. The Bulldogs had a big early lead, but just could not hang on against an explosive Auburn offense.

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 11/12/2010

Last week was a very strange one for the Public Action Report - there was only one game that really fit the criteria. That’s far below expectations. I didn’t end up writing up the Report as a result of the lack of action. This week we’re back, and with lots of action.

Owner Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/11/2010

A – America’s Team. Long labeled as ‘America’s Team,’ the Dallas Cowboys are not even ‘Dallas’ team’. The latest Dallas debacle, a 45-7 loss at Green Bay that cost Wade Phillips his job, scored only a 27.8 rating in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, down a whopping 42 percent, or 306,162 fewer homes, than watched the Dallas/Washington season-opener.

Fourth Down and Inches Football Predictions Report - Big Ten Game of the Year Edition
by Doc - 11/9/2010

It was not a monster week, but once again we turned in a profit for the weekend for our football picks, gaining +10 units ($100 bettors made $840). I thought the college football schedule lacked quality plays, especially in the Big Ten, as three games had a team favored by 20 or more points. This week the Big Ten looks real attractive, and especially so for one encounter. This game will be selected as our, “Big Ten Game of the Year.”

Pittsburgh QB Ben Rothlisberger

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 11/4/2010

B - Ben RoethlisCock-Burger. Sportscenter anchor Chris McKendry provided us with possibly the sound bite of the year when she "accidentally" referred to Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as Ben RoethlisCock on live air. She quickly added a burger to the ending of it, making it sound even funnier. It officially sounded like Ben RoethlisCock-Burger, possibly a new nickname for the quarterback who has a thing for hanging out in the ladies bathroom at college bars.

Fourth Down and Inches – Football Predictions Report
by Doc - 11/2/2010

Our selection service produced another profit this week, picking up +12 units ($100 bettors made $1,040). Most of the damage was done in the NFL, as we went 3-0 on Sunday, including nailing a 6-unit play from the Detroit/Washington game. One of our losses on Saturday was a real mystery, as I have yet to figure out what happened to Nevada. The Wolf Pack were up 35-0 at halftime, playing in Reno. They went on to give up 42 points in the second half. Did the defense decide to go home after intermission?

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/29/2010

The good times keep rolling for the Public Action Report this year. Last week we had four games identified, and in three of them we were on the right side. More significantly, all three of those were upsets that paid handsomely on the money line - especially the surprising upset of West Virginia by Syracuse. Here’s hoping that the good times continue. This week we have six games - four in college football, and two more in the NFL.

Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees.

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 10/27/2010

A – ARod. The original LeBron James, Alex Rodriguez, was spotted with James at a Miami nightclub partying with hip-hop star Drake, who was celebrating his 24th birthday. Many forget that a couple years ago Rodriguez did exactly what James did this summer when he left Texas and joined Derek Jeter’s team in New York in the hunt for a title. ARod and James were spotted partying together the day after the Yankees were eliminated by Rodriguez’s old team, the Texas Rangers.

Fourth Down and Inches – Football Predictions Report
by Doc - 10/27/2010

Our NFL Game of the Year ('over' for New York/Dallas) was never in doubt, as this game was close to being over by halftime on Monday Night Football. It’s always refreshing to have a game that goes 'over' early with no possibility of losing. Gambling would be more fun and, of course, more profitable if all of the games would fall into this category, but that is not the case evident by our performance over the weekend.

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/22/2010

It has been a very strong year for the Public Action Report, and this past week was no exception. Three of the six games that were identified wound up being winners, so there would have been a slight loss betting all games against the spread. It was straight up, though, that the report shone - the three underdogs that covered were all upset winners - Wisconsin, Mississippi State, and Kentucky. The Report has been strong all year at picking nice upsets of good teams. Let’s hope it continues - we are going against a couple of good teams this week as well.

New York Yankees starting pitcher A.J. Burnett

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 10/20/2010

A – A.J. Burnett. Even with a payroll approaching the country’s national deficit, the best pitcher the Yankees could muster for a must-win Game 4 game was AJ Burnett?!?! He’s the owner of a 10-15 record and 5.26 ERA Burnett was trotted out in Game 4 and he quickly was tagged for five earned runs in six innings in a 10-3 Yankees loss. Even with all the money the Yankees spend they are still stuck with Burnett for Game 4.

Fourth Down and Inches – Football Predictions Report
by Doc - 10/20/2010

Our college football picks service continued to roll this past weekend, as we posted a 5-1 record with our six selections. Unfortunately, our only loss happened to be our top play, Ohio State over Wisconsin. There’s no question that the Badgers deserved to win the game, as they looked impressive on both sides of the football.

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/15/2010

The Public Action Report has been having a very good year. Last week wasn’t as strong as the ones before it, but at 4-3 it was still nicely profitable. This week we have encountered a situation that we haven’t seen in a long, long time - no NFL games fit our criteria. Luckily, college football is more than willing to pick up the slack - there are many games that fit to some extent, and six that are particularly interesting.

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 10/13/2010

B – Birdman. On a team with more ink than a Hewlett-Packard factory, Chris “Birdman” Anderson just outdid the rest of his tatted up Denver Nugget teammates with the most bizarre tattoo in professional sports. On the last few square inches of his body without ink, Anderson tattooed every color imaginable around his neck and the words ‘FREE BIRD’. We had a nice performance with our college football selections on Saturday, as we posted a 4-1-1 record. This could have been even better if we had pulled out our top play with Notre Dame -6 over Pittsburgh. The Irish led 20-3 at one point but could not keep control and won the game, 23-17, giving us a ‘push’.

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/8/2010

It has been a good year for the Public Action Report so far, and last week was as good as it gets. In college football the Report identified Indiana as a team likely to cover against Michigan, and they did. It also spotted Iowa State’s big upset of Texas Tech. On the NFL side the two games were both winners as well - the Giant’s win over the Bears, and San Francisco’s cover against the Falcons.

He has already publicly passed the torch to No. 1 overall draft pick John Wall saying, “(I’m here to) Teach John the ins and outs of the game and then eventually go on and move on, and I’m on my way.” Arenas went on to call himself Robin and call Wall Batman.

Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Ricky Stanzi

Fourth Down and Inches – Football Predictions Report
by Doc - 10/5/2010

Our College Game of the Year won as expected with Iowa dominating Penn State, 24-3. The Hawkeyes defense was my biggest base for choosing this selection. Their front four may be the best in the country. The line came in somewhat low because of Iowa’s poor showing at Arizona a couple of weeks ago. Keep an eye out for this club, as they may be the best team in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes have this week off before a grinding Big Ten schedule. However, Iowa does get Wisconsin, Michigan State and Iowa at home.

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 10/1/2010

It was a very strong week for the Public Action Report last week. Three of the four games we looked at turned out the way we thought - and opposite to how the vast majority of the public thought they would. That included Cincinnati’s near upset of Oklahoma and Chicago’s Monday night win over the Packers to become the last remaining undefeated team in the NFC.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 9/29/2010

B – Bryant, Dez. If given the option of rookie hazing rituals again perhaps the Dallas Cowboys’ rookie wide receiver would opt for carrying shoulder pads off the field. His real rookie hazing came after a night out at Pappas Steakhouse on Monday night. The veterans on the Cowboys packed their appetite and some even packed up some bottles of wine and champagne to go. The final tab came to $54,896.

Fourth Down and Inches – Football Predictions Report

Our College Football Game of the Year will go this Saturday. Big games like this always bring extra pressure, but if you can’t take the heat, don’t turn on the stove. I circled this game before the season started, knowing full well that this homer would also have this game circled on their calendar. I am very confident that both of us will be in the winning circle come Saturday night. If you need a winner this week, get on this baby.

Cleveland Browns Alex Mack

This Week in Sports Betting, A-Z
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 9/22/2010

A- Alex Mack. In pileups in the NFL, players are going after the loose ball. On Sunday it appears as though Chiefs defensive lineman Shaun Smith went after another kind of ball. Browns center Alex Mack alleges that Smith grabbed his genitals during a pileup in the first half. “I don’t think he should be able to do that,” Mack was reported as saying. “I’m still fired up about it.” Smith had a great rebuttal, “I don’t have no comment.” He may have not have no comment but Smith may have incidentally played a hand in his team’s win over the Browns.

Fourth Down and Inches – College Football Predictions Report
by Doc - 9/21/2010

Week 3 of the 2010-11 college football season is now officially in the record books. The Coaches Poll has Alabama atop the standings. Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 9/17/2010

We’ll start with a brief recap of what we are looking for because it’s early in the season. Typically, when a large number of bets - at least 70 percent of all those placed on a game - are on one side then we would expect the odds for that side to get less attractive in response to the attention. Sometimes, though, we see situations where the action is unbalanced, yet the team that gets the attention actually finds their odds getting more attractive.

Ines Sainz. The bombshell sports reporter for Mexico’s TV Azteca says she has felt uncomfortable around the New York Jets team after she was subjected to catcalls and whistles. Sainz was reporting on Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez, a Mexican-American. Along with the catcalls and whistles Sainz noticed errant footballs kept landing around her forcing players to come near her to retrieve them. Of course if anybody watched Sanchez Monday night it is obvious that those passes landing near the television reporters were probably by accident.

Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans

Football Betting: Weekly Public Action Report
by Trevor Whenham - 9/10/2010

If you are new to the Report, the games that capture our attention each week are ones that have line movement that doesn't make sense given the betting patterns. Specifically, when more than 70 percent of bets have been made on one team yet the line on that team is dropping (becoming more attractive), then we take note. That indicates one of two things: either that a small number of serious bettors are betting large amounts of money on the team that the public doesn't like, or that for some reason the books have a good reason not to be afraid of one-sided action in a game.

A – AshleyMadison.com. The dating Web site submitted a $25 million offer to purchase the naming rights to the new Giants Stadium for five seasons through the 2014 Super Bowl. The one big snag with the bid is the nature of the dating Web site. AshleyMadison.com specifically targets people interested in committing adultery. A – Alberto and Andy. The lack of kuth in this Tour de France has not just been limited to head-butting bikers (more on that later). Former Tour leader Andy Schleck expressed anger not just because his chain came loose during the 15th stage but also because defending champion Alberto Contador did not wait for him to catch up. This is tantamount to a linebacker losing a cleat and a running back waiting for him to catch up so he would have a chance to make the tackle. Fans booed Contador as he donned the yellow jersey after gaining an eight-second lead over Schleck. Thanks to this lack of sportsmanship there may finally be some drama as the Tour winds down this week.

‘Pretty good’ wasn't good enough for the Hawks. Head coach Mike Woodson is out of a job this week after six years at the helm of the team after his contract was not renewed. His time couldn't be called anything but a success - after winning just 13 games his first year he posted a better record each year and made the playoffs the last three years. The team looked totally hopeless in getting swept by the Magic, though, and management clearly wondered how much further Woodson could take the team. Needless to say, the next hire will be absolutely crucial.

Chelsea needed a win in their weekend contest against Wigan to clinch the Premier League title. They certainly got it. Chelsea won 8-0 in a ridiculously lopsided contest. Wigan lost a player to a red card in the first half, but that wasn't the deciding factor in this one. With the start of every new season there has to be a team that is the last to win their first game. That team was unfortunately the Astros this year. It took them nine games to finally enter the win column. Silva obviously could have beat Maia to a pulp at any time after breaking his nose early with a flying kick, but instead of fighting him he just taunted and mocked him for five rounds en route to the decision. There are few things as fun to watch as a meltdown by a coach, and Jim Playfair had one for the ages this week. Upset about a call by the refs, Playfair climbed up on the bench, took a player's stick, and smashed it over the boards. That was just the start. Next, he ripped his jacket off in his best Incredible Hulk impression. Finally, he grabbed a second stick and wrecked it in a way that made the first one look gentle. It was epic.

He ended it with a bang on Sunday - two goals and the shootout winner to beat Toronto. More significant than that performance, though, is the fact that he moved into the NHL goal scoring lead. Crosby has looked for assists before goals before this year, so what we are seeing is a new, scarier version of greatness.

Northern Iowa guard Ali Farokhmanesh

There is no question what the enduring image of the first weekend of this year's tournament is going to be. Northern Iowa's Ali Farokhmanesh got the ball in three-point territory, briefly considered that he should pass because he had been ice cold all of the second half, couldn't resist the fact that he was wide open, and coolly hit they three pointer that stuck a dagger in the heart of Kansas. It may have been an unlikely win - one of the most unlikely ever - but you sure can't say that the Panthers were a fluke. They looked like they wanted that win from the start, and they outplayed the top ranked team in the country.

Davd Beckham is far from the best soccer player in the world, but he is perhaps the best known. His mobs of adoring fans won't be able to see him at the World Cup this summer, or during the MLS season, either. Beckham tore his Achilles while playing for AC Milan on Sunday. That means that his international career has probably come to an end, and there is a chance that the 34 year old won't play again at all.

The latest stop on the trail to the Kentucky Derby was the Gotham at Aqueduct, and the winner was an unlikely but intriguing one. Awesome Act, who was a hard charging fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last time we saw him, won the race handily in his first start on dirt. Trained by Jeremy Noseda in England, the horse will stay in the States now and be aimed at the Woo Memorial as his final prep for a hopeful Derby start.

There are going to be a whole lot of unhappy people in Austria. Downhill skiing is a very, very big deal there, and it always shows in their results. Well, almost always - Vancouver was a disaster for them. In Turin they won 14 medals. They took home just four from Vancouver. Only one of those medals was gold, and none were won by men. This isn't the kind of thing that will be accepted - you can expect heads to roll.

Amare Stoudemire was long rumored as the power forward Cleveland was going to get to add the scoring punch needed to win the title, but in the end it turned out to be Jamison - mostly because they were able to get Jamison practically for free. I'm confident that the deal will turn out well for the Cavs, but early returns have not been positive - they have lost three in a row since the deal, and Jamison was a pathetic 0-for-12 with 2 points in his debut game.

108,713. That's the number that will forever define the 2010 NBA All-Star Game. That's the number of people who were jammed into Cowboys' Stadium to watch the game - by far the largest basketball crowd in history. The game itself was pretty much exactly what you would expect - ridiculous amounts of offense, non-existent defense, and some lapses in decision making that you just wouldn't see in a normal game.

Soccer has found a new way to entertain us this week - sordid sexcapades. First, it was revealed that the 1998 World Cup was the disaster it was for the Americans in large part because of the distraction caused when captain John Harkes was booted from the team two months before the tournament. His crime? He slept with teammate Eric Wynalda's wife.

The NBA all-star reserves - the guys who really matter because they are picked by people who know what they are talking about and not the public - were announced this week. There are seven frst timers among the group, including Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant - two guys who are making their first appearance of many. You can't really argue about any of the guys who are on the team (though I think that they picked the wrong Gasol brother), but there are a few guys who really deserve to be there - notably Chris Kaman and David Lee.

The Angels have had a lousy, bizarre offseason, and it didn't get any better this week. They made two deals, and both are head scratchers. First, they committed $16 million over two years to add Joel Pineiro to their rotation. Pineiro theoretically replaces John Lackey in the rotation, but he's a significant step down. Second, the team was so desperate to get rid of Gary Matthews Jr. and his contract that they not only traded him to the Mets, but they agreed to pay $21.5 million of the $23 million remaining.

The Hawks have had more than their share of great wins this year - including a big one at Boston on Monday - but none has been as dramatic as the one over Phoenix on Friday night. Atlanta was down by four with 10 seconds left but somehow managed to get two more possessions after that, and they sealed it at the buzzer as Jamal Crawford sunk an impossibly long three pointer. Phoenix is now just 10-14 after starting the season 14-3, and on Saturday got humiliated at Charlotte.

The non-BCS conferences have an undisputed king. Boise State beat up on TCU in the Fiesta Bowl, and they did it by showing us just how dominant a new(ish) aspect of their game really is. We've always known that Boise State can pile up the points, but it's only in the last year that we have come to realize that they can also play stifling defense.

The Falcons were supposed to be in deep against Houston and their potent passing offense in the Armed Forces Bowl. They obviously weren't worried. Their defense held Case Keenum to just 222 yards passing, and picked him off six times - just three fewer interceptions than he had in his first 12 games combined.
