Preakness Stakes Odds and Props Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/20/2011
The Preakness is a good place to look for value in the props offered by sportsbooks - especially if you like the Derby winner. The public throws all of their money at one horse most years, so there is no value betting him in the pari-mutuel - at least not betting him straight up. Sometimes the props can offer different ways of looking at the race that can balance risk and reward more effectively. Here's a look at some of the more interesting Preakness props on offer this year:

Animal Kingdom Preakness Stakes Favorite - Odds and Profile
by Trevor Whenham - 5/20/2011
Last race: He's coming off a win in the toughest race any three year old will ever run in -- the Kentucky Derby. If this horse continues to impress then his story will become the thing of legends. He had never even been on a dirt track until a week before the Derby, and he had only run four times previously, so there were lots of strikes against him heading into that race.

Dialed In Odds For Preakness Stakes Win With Analysis
by Trevor Whenham - 5/20/2011
Last race: Dialed In was badly beaten as the Kentucky Derby favorite last time out. As a deep closer he relies on a fast early pace to tire out the horses at the front and make them vulnerable to his late charge. The early fractions in the Derby were historically slow, though, so when he made his move he was trying to catch horses that had lots of gas left and he couldn't do it. He passed some stragglers, but wound up a non-threatening eighth. It wasn't a total disaster of a result, but given that he was the favorite and that he didn't run into any traffic or serious problems it was a long way from impressive.

On Wednesday the track officials drew the Preakness Stakes post positions for the 14-horse field and the results have helped to clarify what is already a murky lineup of mounts.

How to Bet the Preakness Stakes
by Trevor Whenham - 5/19/2011
The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes are the first two legs of the Triple Crown, so people might assume that they are similar races. From a betting perspective, though, they really aren't. Here's a look at four differences that have an impact on how you should handicap this race and some tips on how to bet the Preakness Stakes:

2011 Preakness Stakes Pace Scenarios
by Trevor Whenham - 5/19/2011
Pace, or the projected shape of the race, is always a big part of handicapping horse races, but it is especially important in the Triple Crown races because young horses are being asked to do things they have never done before.

2011 Preakness Stakes Handicapping Trends
by Trevor Whenham - 5/18/2011
The Preakness Stakes hasn't produced as many strong trends over the years as the Kentucky Derby has, but given what has happened at the Derby in recent years -- every long-term trend seems to have been rendered meaningless -- that's not really a bad thing. Like every recurring, event, though, there are still some Preakness Stakes handicapping trends for us to grab onto in our search for a winner:

Horses That are Real Preakness Stakes Contenders
by Robert Ferringo - 5/18/2011
The Preakness is not only the shortest of the three Triple Crown horses races, but also it routinely posts one of the smallest fields. With a maximum of 14 mounts this mile-and-a-quarter race is perhaps the most wide-open, lightning fast, no-holds-barred of any of the three Triple Crown runs.

2011 Preakness Stakes Odds: Fresh Horses in the Preakness
by Trevor Whenham - 5/18/2011
One of the biggest challenges in handicapping the Preakness Stakes is dealing with the horses that join the Triple Crown trail in Baltimore after skipping the first stop in Kentucky. Quite often they are horses that didn't run in the Derby because they weren't good enough to do so -- either they didn't have the earnings to make the field, they couldn't handle the distance, or they just weren't of the caliber to be ready for the run for the roses.

2011 Preakness Stakes Jockeys
by Trevor Whenham - 5/18/2011
As always in a Triple Crown race, the jockeys in this year's Preakness pack a whole lot of storylines. They may be little, but they sure are interesting: Here are eight of the more interesting jockey stories for this year's Preakness:

Horses That Can Win the Preakness Stakes
by Trevor Whenham - 5/13/2011
Animal Kingdom looked pretty good in winning the Kentucky Derby, but obviously not good enough to scare off the competition -- it looks like we'll see a full Preakness Stakes field of 14 horses on May 21 as the Derby winner tries to secure the second leg of the Triple Crown. Any horse can win any given race if things work out just right for them, but there are obviously some horses that just aren't that likely to succeed. Of the 14 likely starters you can only legitimately say that there are seven horses that can win the Preakness Stakes. Here's a look at each (Preakness odds are the early numbers from Daily Racing Form):

2011 Preakness Stakes Contenders
by Robert Ferringo - 5/11/2011
Call it Fate. Call it good fortune. Call it what you will, but for whatever reason it looks like Animal Kingdom's bid for the Triple Crown continues to get easier by the day. The Kentucky Derby-winning colt benefitted from a sketchy field at Churchill Downs and may once again be stacked up against the "B Team" in the next leg of the Triple Crown horse races, the Preakness Stakes.

Can Animal Kingdom win the Triple Crown?
by Trevor Whenham - 5/11/2011
I am not exaggerating when I say that there is pretty much nothing in the world I want more than a Triple Crown winner. I'm totally obsessed. I was just barely out of diapers in 1978 when Affirmed last won the Triple Crown, and my heart has been broken more times than I want to count since then. As soon as the Kentucky Derby ends each year I focus entirely on whether the winner of that race can finally get it done.

2011 Preakness Stakes Field: An Early Look at Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 5/11/2011
Animal Kingdom's Kentucky Derby win was reasonably impressive, but it obviously hasn't scared too many horses away from challenging him in the Preakness. The maximum field size for the second jewel of the Triple Crown is 14 horses, and early indications are that all of the spots in the starting gate are going to be full. Here's a look at the 14 horses that are at this point most likely to enter the Preakness Stakes field (odds are from the Daily Racing Form's Mike Watchmaker):
