College Basketball Handicapping: Predicting the Line on Marquee Matchups
by Aaron Smith - 12/30/2012

Most of the sports world is paying attention to college football right now, but bettors looking for value should keep an eye on college basketball as the New Year nears. The oddsmakers tend to spend a little less time on these college hoops matchups this time of the season, so there is always that chance of finding some soft lines.

UNLV at North Carolina Picks and College Basketball Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 12/28/2012

It’s quite a rarity in Saturday afternoon’s game between No. 20 UNLV and North Carolina: It’s only the fifth time the Tar Heels’ 179 nonconference games at the Smith Center that the opposition is ranked and UNC isn’t. Carolina is 2-2 in those matchups, with the last such happening on Dec. 10, 2010, with the Heels beating No. 10 Kentucky, 75-73. As the school Web site points out, expect a great game Saturday as three of those previous four occurrences have been decided in the final 20 seconds.

College Basketball Picks: New Mexico vs. Cincinnati Odds and Predictions
by Dave Schwab - 12/26/2012

The New Mexico Lobos will look to get back to their winning ways when they square off against the undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats this Thursday night at Fifth Third Arena. The game is set to tip off at 9 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. The Lobos cracked the AP’s Top 25 with an impressive 12-0 straight up start but quickly retreated from the latest rankings after an ugly 70-65 loss to South Dakota State as 15-point favorites at home this past Saturday.

College Basketball Handicapping: Predicting the Line on Marquee Matchups
by Aaron Smith - 12/18/2012

Final exams week is always one of the least exciting for bettors in college basketball. During the week last week the games were few and far between. The games that were on the schedule were top teams against cupcakes. The 30- and 40-point blowouts were all over the place. Thankfully, last Saturday brought a couple of great games. Butler’s historic upset of No. 1 Indiana might have been the best game of the year thus far. Arizona’s last-minute comeback to beat Florida was an exciting one for those who were able to stay up and watch.

College Basketball Picks: Stanford at NC State Odds and Predictions
by Dave Schwab - 12/17/2012

The Cardinal may be poised to break into the Top 25 with a few more quality wins after posting a 7-3 straight up record in their first 10 games. In their only other matchup this season against a ranked team, they lost to then-No.13 Missouri 78-70 as 2.5-point underdogs on Nov.22. Stanford is 4-4-1 against the spread overall and 2-1-1 ATS in road and neutral-site games.

by Robert Ferringo - 12/14/2012

Saturday marks the end of “Finals Week” across the college basketball landscape. The national schedule has been reduced throughout most of the week due, in large part, to players (remember: they have to hold up their end of the whole student-athlete charade) having to take final exams at their respective institutes of higher education.

College Basketball Handicapping: Kentucky Struggles
by Trevor Whenham - 12/14/2012

If you trusted what the media had to say you would think that the sky was falling in Lexington, Kentucky. The Wildcats have lost three games this year. There is no real shame in losing to Duke, but Notre Dame isn’t a great loss, and the Baylor loss is just plain bad at this point. The team had the top recruiting class in the country and was ranked third heading into the season, so they are not supposed to be just 6-3 and unranked in mid-December.

Handicapping the Undefeated College Basketball Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 12/12/2012

The college basketball season seems like it just begun, but we are already almost a third of the way through the season — and not far from the start of the conference season. Every team starts the season undefeated, but already we are down to just 14 teams that have yet to lose. The prospect of an undefeated team entering the NCAA Tournament is enticing every year. So, can it happen this year? Here’s a look at each unbeaten team, what they have accomplished, and when (or if) they are likely to lose:

College Basketball Handicapping: Predicting the Line on Marquee Matchups
by Aaron Smith - 12/11/2012

Entering this week, the Indiana Hoosiers are still at the top of the college basketball rankings. There are 10 remaining unbeaten teams in the Top 25. Duke has beaten three teams that were ranked in the Top 4 when they played them. The Illinois Fighting Illini served notice in Maui earlier this year, and then they put a hurting on Gonzaga in Spokane last weekend. It looks like we better keep an eye on the Fighting Illini moving forward.

College Basketball Handicapping: Predicting the Line on Marquee Matchups
by Aaron Smith - 12/3/2012

Last week was a great week of early-season college basketball. The Big Ten/ACC Challenge ended in a 6-6 tie, and there was some terrific action in those 12 games. Duke found a way to beat another highly-ranked opponent and stay unbeaten. Maryland is starting to make some real noise with some impressive performances early in the season as well. Indiana continues to show they are worthy of their No. 1 spot in the rankings. Madison Square Garden will host the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday of this week, and Saturday’s schedule will be full of exciting games as usual.

College Basketball Handicapping: Predicting the Line on Marquee Matchups
by Aaron Smith - 11/27/2012

I hope everyone has recovered from the huge Thanksgiving meals. It’s always a great time of the year, and basketball kicks off in a big way during this late-November period. Indiana still sits at the top of the new Top 25 polls, but Duke is now a strong second. The Blue Devils have wins over Kentucky and Louisville early in the season, and it looks like they are primed for a big season. With Michigan and Ohio State sitting at spots three and four, the Big Ten Conference has three of the top four teams in the nation.

College Basketball Picks: North Carolina at Indiana Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/26/2012

Probably the best event before conference play begins in college basketball arrives on Tuesday and Wednesday this week with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The made-for-ESPN Challenge has been a huge success so far, and the shifting landscape might show the Big Ten has surpassed the ACC in basketball. While the ACC won the first 10 Challenges, the Big Ten won 8-4 last year, and four of those wins came on the road. It was the Big Ten’s third straight Commissioner’s Cup.

College Basketball Handicapping: Most Volatile Ranked Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2012

Sometimes in college sports there are teams that come into the season highly-ranked, and you have little doubt that they will remain highly-ranked throughout the season. More often, though, teams are highly-ranked because of their potential, but the real chance exists that they could fail to meet expectations and could fall out of the rankings entirely. College football this year provided a perfect example — USC came into the season ranked first overall, and the Trojans now sit with their season in shambles at 7-4.

One of the many great parts of the college basketball season is the preseason tournaments we are treated to around Thanksgiving. College Basketball Betting: Off-the-Radar Value Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 11/14/2012

The college basketball season is, happily, underway. There are always lots of teams that get plenty of attention from the media, but there are so many teams that good teams can easily slip under the radar and get less attention from the public than they deserve. Here are six teams that stand out to me because they have the potential to make some noise and exceed early expectations.

College Basketball Conference Futures Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/12/2012

The college basketball season tipped off on Friday, but conference play around the country won’t begin until the end of December or early in the New Year. Realistically, winning your conference is nice but doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things to the top teams unless it earns you a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. It can mean everything for NCAA bubble teams to get that automatic bid.

2012-13 Mountain West Conference Basketball Predictions and Betting Odds
by Robert Ferringo - 11/2/2012

The 2011-12 season was a banner year for the Mountain West. 2012-13 SEC Basketball Odds and Betting Predictions
by Robert Ferringo - 10/23/2012

SEC basketball was collateral damage in the big BCS college football shakeup of 2011. Now comprised of a whopping 14 teams, the SEC is a bloated mess of college hoops pretenders. At one time this league had some of the best basketball in the nation. But right now it is a dominating Kentucky team, a couple of second-rate programs, and a host of third- and fourth-rate schools simply providing their fan base a distraction between kickoffs.

2012-13 ACC Basketball Odds and Betting Predictions
by Robert Ferringo - 10/16/2012

I said last year that the ACC sucked. And it did. Oh, it did. The ACC sent just five teams to the NCAA Tournament, with North Carolina State barely nudging their way into the Field of 68. In terms of college basketball betting, only five of the 12 teams in the league finished with profitable season for their backers. The most profitable team in the league was N.C. State, earning bettors a paltry +260 for the year. That was the lowest the total for best bet of any conference in the country.

It’s a pretty safe bet that either Duke or North Carolina is going to win the ACC Tournament. Not only are these two of the Top 10 teams in the country but also the Blue Devils and Tar Heels have cut down the nets in this tourney in 15 of the last 16 years. Connecticut’s postseason run last year is already the thing of legend, and that legend will only grow as time passes. Coming into the Big East tournament they were far from a remarkable team. Welcome to the most underrated conference in the country. For the last two months the national bobblehead media has been condescending and dismissive in their analysis of the Pac-12. Things are a little different in the SEC this year. In previous years the SEC had seeded its teams 1-6 based on their respective divisional finishes with the top two teams in each division, East and West, receiving a bye. However, there had always been grumbling in the SEC East – the division with more traditional basketball powers – that this was unfair. Teams with better conference records in the East were being forced to play an extra game while division winners with weaker teams and worse records were able to enjoy a bye.

Well, I suppose this is it for the Big East. Because of the cesspool that is college football, the Big East, as we have known it for nearly three decades, will be no more. West Virginia’s departure for the Big 12 next season is already confirmed. Syracuse and Pittsburgh are both defecting to the ACC, but their departure date is undetermined. It’s Carolina-Duke. What more is there to say as college basketball’s regular season comes to a close this weekend? Actually, there’s plenty to say about the sport’s best rivalry. It’s the 233rd time overall the two have met and 44th that the Tobacco Road bluebloods will play as Top-10 foes – and second time this season. And all that’s on the line Saturday night in Durham is the outright ACC regular-season championship, the No. 1 seed that goes with it in next week’s conference tournament and almost assuredly a top seed in the NCAA Tournament barring an early flameout in the conference tourney by Saturday’s winner.

The final few weeks of the regular season college basketball schedule is upon us with the madness of March’s NCAA Tournament a little over a month away. While the top teams in the country continue to jockey for a favorable seed in the 68-team field, a couple of schools on the bubble are simply trying to earn an invitation to the Big Dance.

How RPI Plays Into College Basketball Handicapping
by Trevor Whenham - 2/16/2012

RPI is something you hear about a lot in college basketball. That talk intensifies as the postseason draws near. Most college basketball fans and bettors — even casual ones — have heard of RPI. They may even have a vague sense of what it is. Few people, though, really understand what it is and why it is significant. That’s where we come in.

College Basketball Handicapping: Bracket Buster Trends and Betting Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 2/16/2012

As a fan, this is a chance to see the game in pure form. I mean, what says, “College Basketball Perfection” like Presbyterian vs. Jacksonville State or Western Michigan vs. North Dakota State matchup. The 2011-12 college basketball schedule enters the second half of February with the madness of March lurking right around the corner. College Basketball Handicapping: Any Betting Value on Murray State After Loss?
by Trevor Whenham - 2/10/2012

I have been wanting to write about Murray State for quite a while now. Of course, I wanted to write a different article than I will be writing now. Before Thursday night the Racers were a huge story. They had won 23 games in a row, were ranked as high as No. 7 in the country, and seemed to have a very good shot at ending the season undefeated.

Back on Nov. 8 here at Doc’s, my predictions story for the 2011-12 NCAA Basketball Player of the Year was unveiled. It’s time to do a revisit of this story as there is only about a month left in the regular season and Bovada has re-posted updated odds on this college basketball prop.

Beyond the Top 25 – A College Hoops Weekly

It’s the first full week of February, and when talking college basketball that means one thing for me: Bracket Buster Saturday. For my enjoyment, this one particular weekend in mid-February has arguably the best offerings in college basketball (pre-March Madness, of course). You get a handful of the best mid-major on mid-major matchups, while still getting your fix of top matchups from all the big leagues around the country.
