2012 Kentucky Derby Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/3/2012
The post positions have been drawn, the horses are at the track, and now all we can do is wait. The Kentucky Derby is the greatest two minutes in sports, and the best live sporting event there is. As I anxiously await this year's edition - with a particularly solid class - here are eight 2012 Kentucky Derby predictions I feel pretty good about:

2012 Kentucky Derby Pace Scenario
by Trevor Whenham - 5/3/2012
The pace scenario is always an interesting and challenging part of the Kentucky Derby. The race is so chaotic that anything can happen. The better our guess about what is likely to happen, though, the better off we are. Here's my best guess about how the Kentucky Derby field shapes up:

2012 Kentucky Derby Post Positions
by Trevor Whenham - 5/2/2012
A full field of 20 entered the Kentucky Derby. Front runner Bodemeister, trained by Bob Baffert, is the favorite at 4-1, with Union Rags close behind at 9/2. One of those two will likely be post-time favorite. For the first time there is an also-eligible horse in the field. If any of the entered horses scratches by Friday then My Adonis will move up and take his place. Here's how the Kentucky Derby field will enter the gate (Post Position, Name, Morning Line Odds, Trainer, Jockey):

2012 Kentucky Derby Contenders
by Trevor Whenham - 5/2/2012
I am a huge fan of this Kentucky Derby field. Last year's problem was that it didn't seem like there was a single horse worthy of winning the race. This year there are almost too many to choose from. This is a deep, impressive field.

2012 Kentucky Derby Jockeys
by Trevor Whenham - 5/2/2012
Jockeys are perhaps the single most important player in the outcome of the Kentucky Derby. They can win a race with a brilliant ride - like Calvin Borel did aboard Mine That Bird. They can also turn a strong horse into a frustrating loser - like far too many riders to mention over the years.

2012 Kentucky Derby Trainers
by Trevor Whenham - 5/2/2012
Baffert brings two horses to the race this year, but the one everyone will be paying attention to is potential favorite Bodemeister - named after Baffert's son Bode. The other is Liaison, a talented colt who has yet to find his stride. Baffert is, in my eyes, as good as there is in the game right now.

We're still a few days away from entry day for the Run for the Roses. That means that the Kentucky Derby field could still change, and we have no idea how the all-important post position draw will turn out. There is also a surprising amount of jockey uncertainty at this point in the process.

2012 Kentucky Derby Handicapping: the Experience Factor
by Trevor Whenham - 4/27/2012
Thanks to the impressive Bodemeister one of the biggest storylines heading into the Kentucky Derby is going to be the so-called "Curse of Apollo". In 1882 Apollo won the Derby after only making his racing debut earlier in his three-year-old year. In the 130 years since, though, no horse has managed to win the biggest three year old race in the world without racing at two.

For the second year in a row Kentucky Derby bettors are going to have to face a relatively rare challenge - how to deal with a horse that comes in to the race after being based outside of North America. As if picking a winner in this race isn't hard enough already.

For a horse racing fan it doesn't get any better than the month of April. This is when we get to see some truly incredible performances, and to suffer through some massive letdowns.

Kentucky Derby Party -- Infield or Clubhouse: A Kentuckian's Advice on Throwing a Derby Bash
by Kaelan Hollon
Staring down the long, cold barrel of a Kentucky State Trooper's handgun at 2:49 in the morning in the first weekend of May is not a fun way to bide time. Kentucky takes its horses very, very seriously, and attempting to hop on a $120,000 thoroughbred during one's stay in the Bluegrass State does not a good Derby Day make, as a friend of mine recently found out. Handcuffs hurt. And the jails in the Commonwealth? Let me tell you something, Bubba, they ain't a bit of fun.

Kentucky Derby Betting Tips
by Trevor Whenham
The Kentucky Derby won't be here for several weeks, but I'm already dreaming of cashing a big ticket, and I'm sure I'm not alone in those thoughts. In my mind nothing is more exciting than the Derby, and the lead up and anticipation is almost too much to take. It's way too early to do any serious handicapping because we won't have a good idea of the field for several weeks. What we can do, though, is put some thought into our methodology so that we're ready to make a logical pick when the time comes. Here, then, are seven tips and thoughts that you can let bounce around your mind until the real handicapping can begin:
