NFL Totals Betting: Wild Card Round Over and Under Predictions
by Dave Schwab - 12/31/2012

The NFL regular season came to a close this past Sunday, and staying true to a trend that has been the norm over the last 11 weeks is a balanced result on the total line with nine games going “over” the total and seven staying “under”. The overall record on the total line during this extended stretch of games is now 80-81-4. I managed to go 2-1 with my top three picks last week to finish the regular season 26-20-2. With the playoffs at hand, it is time to dial things up in an effort to unearth the value in the total line for this weekend’s Wild Card Round.

This Week in NFL Betting by the Numbers
by Ricky Dimon - 12/28/2012

Well, it all comes down to this. The Cowboys and Redskins aren’t the only ones who can say that on Sunday, although they certainly can preach it louder and prouder than every other team. Fellow NFC East rival New York is clinging to life as the NFL turns the page to Chapter 17 of the regular season. Minnesota and Chicago are also in contention for the sixth and final playoff spot in a conference that should be completely up for grabs during postseason play.

NFC Playoff Scenarios: Who’s In and Who Can Still Move Up or Down
by George Monroy - 12/27/2012

The Playoff scenarios for the NFC entering the final week of the season are as complicated as a playoff situation can be. Just trying to follow the logic on who gets in and who does not could give you a headache that might last until the Super Bowl. But knowing and understanding each team’s playoff situation could be a great way to find excellent betting value during the final week of the season. So, let’s just jump right in and try to figure this whole NFC Playoff situation out. Here is a quick breakdown of all the playoff scenarios for each NFC team still in contention.

AFC Playoff Scenarios: Who’s In and Who Can Still Move Up or Down
by George Monroy - 12/27/2012

The NFL playoff scenarios for the last week of the season are usually as complicated as Newtonian physics, and they probably require a lot less math. We’ve all tried to follow the insane stream of logic required to understand the end-of-season playoff scenarios: if team A loses to team B and team C either ties or beats team D then team E can make the playoffs via the final wild card spot and face team A in the first round of the playoffs (yeah, I have no idea what I just said either).

2013 Super Bowl Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 12/24/2012

We are one week closer to the NFL Playoffs, so we are one week closer to knowing if our 2013 Super Bowl predictions turn out to be accurate. Week 16 was an interesting week in several ways despite an overall lack of drama. We learned which teams will be representing the AFC. We know Atlanta won’t be getting many frequent flyer miles this January. We know that though the NFC East is still wide open, at least two squads don’t handle pressure as well as they could. We know that San Francisco really hopes they don’t face a playoff game in Seattle, or in the rain. And we know that there is more to Minnesota than Adrian Peterson.

NFL Picks: Falcons at Lions Predictions and Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 12/20/2012

If you had looked at this game before the season started, it could have looked like a pretty good one. Both teams seemed like they were legitimate playoff contenders, so it was quite possible that the Falcons and Lions would be battling for a playoff berth, or trying to secure a better position in the postseason. The Falcons have absolutely done their job — they can secure home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a win here.

Handicapping the NFL Playoff Races
by Trevor Whenham - 12/20/2012

Three teams are tied at 8-6, so this one should be absolutely fascinating to watch. The Giants play at Baltimore and against the Eagles. Given the recent struggles of the Ravens, they are positioned to run the table and wind up 10-6, but first they have to rebound from a terrible performance last week at Atlanta. Washington should be able to beat the Eagles this week, and Dallas can beat a frustrated and irrelevant Saints team at home.

NFL Handicapping: Teams That Have Thrown in the Towel
by Trevor Whenham - 12/20/2012

The last two weeks of the NFL season are very depressing in parts of the league. For some teams the season has been over for a long time, and everyone on and around the team knows it. They still have two games left to play, though, and for most of them there is nothing harder to do than to motivate yourselves and care when nothing is at stake. Here’s a look at the eight teams that appear to have given up, and what remains for them over the last two weeks.

This Week in NFL Betting by the Numbers
by Ricky Dimon - 12/20/2012

A crucial Week 15 featured six contests between teams with winning records. That number is sliced in half for Week 16, with Vikings-Texas, Giants-Ravens, and especially 49ers-Seahawks on Monday night taking center stage. Only four games have spreads of fewer than three points, while three spreads favor a team by at least 13 points.

Examining the Most Common NFL Point Spreads
by George Monroy - 12/14/2012

Point spreads may be the most fundamental aspect of sports betting. In order to be able to take equal action on games between teams that do not have equal talent, the sportsbooks have to give the bettor an incentive to bet. The basic idea behind the point spread is to give, or take, points from either side of a game in order to make the matchup an even proposition for bettors to wager on. Remember, sportsbooks make their money on the vig, and they would rather have equal action on both sides of a bet and make their money risk-free.

2013 Super Bowl Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 12/13/2012

We are within sight of the NFL playoffs, so it is a good time to revisit and revise my 2013 Super Bowl predictions. The last time I made Super Bowl predictions was back at the end of August. Needless to say, a whole lot has changed since then. NFL Home Underdogs: Valuable Betting Option?
by George Monroy - 12/13/2012

As sports bettors, we have all heard about the value of betting NFL home underdogs. The smart bettor is never afraid to take the points on a home underdog, which is usually the opposite of the general public, who love to bet the favorites as often as possible. And while it might seem like a logical thought process to take a NFL home team plus points, how much value do they really have?

Week 15 NFL Teasers Advice: Best Three for Basic Strategy Teases
by George Monroy - 12/12/2012

Week 15 of the NFL season is here. And as we quickly make our way to the playoffs, now would be the time to truly appreciate how great the NFL season has really been. Not only have we had entertaining games, coupled with great and horrendously bad teams, but sports bettors have had a great season as well (unless, of course, you were on the other end of that Golden Tate touchdown or ridiculous Jim Harbaugh safety call).

Longshot Super Bowl Futures Odds: Which Teams Have the Best Value?
by George Monroy - 12/11/2012

The Super Bowl may be the most difficult championship to win in professional sports. The single-elimination format makes it extremely difficult for any football team to be a significant favorite. The constant threat of injuries, coupled with the grind of weekly games, make betting Super Bowl futures an excellent way to get huge value and return on a minimal investment.

NFL Picks: Broncos at Raiders Odds and Betting Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 12/6/2012

Writing about this game makes me a little sad. This was once a great rivalry. There is no reason it shouldn’t still be, and the Broncos have certainly done their part this year. The Raiders, though, are a total mess, and they have been for so long now that it’s getting depressing. I’d love nothing more than to close my eyes and pretend that we are back in the glory years of a grand rivalry, but that would require giving Oakland far too much credit — and making a bad decision as a result. Sadly, that means all we can do is deal with the bleak reality of what this game is instead of what it could be.

NFL Week 14 Player Props, Leaders Odds and Betting Picks
by Alan Matthews - 12/6/2012

The rookies getting all the publicity in the NFL this season are the Colts’ Andrew Luck and the Redskins’ Robert Griffin III, the top two picks in the 2012 draft. They certainly both deserve it as both are on record-setting rookie seasons and might get their teams to the playoffs (unbelievable in the Colts’ case). But a guy you don’t hear too much about is Seattle rookie QB Russell Wilson, a third-round pick out of Wisconsin via NC State. Perhaps it’s because Seattle is nestled way up in the Pacific Northwest, but Wilson is having a season that normally would be Rookie of the Year worthy – just not this year.

This Week in NFL Betting by the Numbers
by Ricky Dimon - 12/4/2012

While three teams (Atlanta, Denver, and New England) coasted to destinations that were inevitable many weeks ago, a number of NFL divisions just got a whole lot more interesting after Week 13 developments. Pittsburgh stayed alive in the AFC North, Green Bay finally pulled even with Chicago in the NFC North, and Seattle and Washington are suddenly in play in the NFC West and NFC East, respectively.

2013 Super Bowl Contenders
by Robert Ferringo - 11/30/2012

September seems like a lifetime ago. Just three short months ago people were trying to talk themselves into Mitt Romney for president and the Carolina Panthers as Super Bowl contenders. Now, as winter seeps through the cracks and settles in for the long haul, those same folks are forced to stare at themselves in the mirror each morning and ask, “What the hell was I thinking?”

NFL Handicapping: the Kaepernick vs. Smith Niners Quarterback Controversy
by Trevor Whenham - 11/29/2012

One of the most surprising and intriguing storylines of the last few weeks of the NFL season has been the quarterback situation in San Francisco. The unspoken rule in the league is that a player isn’t supposed to lose his starting role because of injury. When Alex Smith suffered a mild concussion, though, Colin Kaepernick was so good in relief that he was named starter even once Alex Smith was declared healthy.

NFL Picks: Saints at Falcons Betting Predictions and Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 11/28/2012

There is a good chance that this will be the best Thursday night game we have seen all year — though that’s not saying much given the overwhelming slate of mid-week games we have been subjected to. The stakes are very high for both teams in this one.

NFL Handicapping: Teams that Could Finish Strong
by Trevor Whenham - 11/28/2012

At this point in the NFL season there are some teams that we know are going to finish strong. The Patriots, Texans and Ravens are very strong in the AFC, for example, and San Francisco is for real in the NFC. Those teams are less interesting to bettors, though, because the public is all over them. What is more interesting is finding teams that have a good potential to be more impressive than people think. Here are four squads that have the chance to reward the bettors who believe in them the rest of the way:

This Week in NFL Betting by the Numbers
by Ricky Dimon - 11/22/2012

It’s Thanksgiving week in the NFL, and football bettors and fans always have a lot for which to be thankful this time of year. The Lions and Cowboys have traditionally taken the field on Thanksgiving Day, and a recently-added night game continues to be part of the menu. What more could you ask for, in addition to a smorgasbord of food, then a smorgasbord of NFL action on national television?

NFL Picks: Texans at Lions Predictions and Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 11/21/2012

There are three games on offer this Thanksgiving, and it’s the strongest group of games we have seen on Turkey Day in quite awhile. The Patriots and Jets will be good for some fireworks, and the RGIII show rarely disappoints, but in my eyes the first of the three games is by far the most interesting. Both of these teams have the potential to be very good, but both have shown — many times over in the case of the Lions — that they are vulnerable and imperfect as well.

NFL Totals Betting: Week 12 Over and Under Predictions
by Dave Schwab - 11/20/2012

The “under” play in Week 11 of the NFL regular season had a slight 8-6 advantage, but over the past five weeks the oddsmakers have been dead on with 34 games going “over,” 33 games staying under and two games ending in a “push”. I posted a 2-1 record for the week on my top three picks to improve to13-9-1 over the past eight weeks and to16-13-1 for the year. With all 32 teams back in action, I have been digging deep into this week’s matchups to try and unearth the value in the total line.

NFL Week 11 Bovada Backup QB Specials Props Odds and Wagering Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/16/2012

There will be more than a few backup quarterbacks starting this week around the NFL, but probably the most intriguing one is with Philadelphia where Nick Foles, a third-round rookie out of Arizona, will be the guy under center at the Washington Redskins. Michael Vick suffered yet another injury in last week’s loss to Dallas, the Eagles’ fifth straight defeat. It was called a “significant” concussion that could keep Vick out multiple weeks.

NFL Teams that will be Looking for New Quarterback
by Trevor Whenham - 11/16/2012

We are in a strong era for quarterbacks in the NFL. More teams are reasonably well set at the position than in any period I can remember. Not just passable quarterbacks, either — there are a lot of very good pivots in the league right now. As proof of that reality, there are only three teams that are all but certain to be in the market for an upgrade at the position, and only a handful of others that could be in the market but have other needs to address that could be more pressing. Here’s a look at the six most likely potential QB openings at the end of the season:

NFL Picks: Dolphins at Bills Predictions and Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 11/14/2012

This is certainly not the matchup it could have been. The Dolphins got off to a surprising 4-3 start and were in the playoff picture — at least on the outskirts of it. They have lost two in a row, though, and have looked far from good doing it. Now they sit at 4-5 and two games behind the wild card spots. They aren’t doomed, but they sure can’t afford any more setbacks.

by Trevor Whenham - 11/13/2012

Every team in the NFL has now played more than half of their schedule. That means we have seen more than enough games to get an accurate sense of the teams that are strong enough to be a solid bet in most situations and those that will found a way to lose your money in the most frustrating ways possible. As of right now if you had bet on every game played by every team only 12 teams would be profitable. Here’s a look at the studs and duds against the spread after 10 weeks of the NFL season:

Order continued to be restored last week in the NFL, with favorites winning just about every single game. NFL Picks: Colts at Jaguars Predictions and Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 11/7/2012

When the NFL schedule came out this game jumped out as easily the worst prime time games of the season, and perhaps one of the worst games period. While it’s still far from must-see TV, it has become a considerably more interesting game than it could have been. All of the credit for that belongs to the Colts. They have won four of five, and are — shockingly — in the midst of playoff race. In fact, if the playoffs started today they would be a wild card team.

Week 10 NFL Teasers Advice: Best Three for Basic Strategy Teases
by George J Monroy - 11/7/2012

Basic strategy teaser spreads have been difficult to find over the last few weeks, as many of the games do not qualify under the strict criteria of finding 1.5-point to 2.5-point underdogs and 7.5-point to 8.5-point favorites. But lucky for sports bettors, the games that do qualify have been winning at an extraordinary rate. Last week the only three basic strategy teaser games on the schedule went 3-0, and overall have gone 40-7 on the season.

Twelve of the NFL’s 32 teams have reached their midway point in terms of games played, and the contenders are starting to separate themselves from the pretenders. That was pretty much the theme of Week 8. The Giants edged Dallas to create some serious distance at the top of the NFC East. Chicago remained 1.5 games up in the NFC North. Arizona started 4-0 but is back where it belongs at 4-4 after getting crushed by the class of the NFC West, San Francisco.

It’s a new week in the NFL, and that means the spotlight shines on a few more NFL head coaches who better win now or will find their heads on the chopping block. In my Week 8 specials preview, I touched on the futures of Carolina’s Ron Rivera and Cleveland’s Pat Shurmur, and both of those guys are likely gone. Rivera’s Panthers blew a chance to pull an upset in Chicago on Sunday, while Shurmur’s Browns did pull a 7-6 home upset of San Diego. And that leads me to Chargers coach Norv Turner.

NFL Odds: Chiefs at Chargers Predictions and Betting Picks
by Trevor Whenham - 10/30/2012

It’s possible that this is the worst prime time game the NFL has ever offered — or at least the worst they have offered in a long, long time. The Chargers have loads of talent, but their last six quarters have been impossibly bad. First, they blew a 24-0 halftime lead against the Broncos, didn’t score again, and lost 35-24. Then they lost 7-6 in Cleveland in a game that set the entire sport of football back at least a decade. They have now lost four of five, and the lone win — at Kansas City — doesn’t earn them any credit.

With every passing week I become more and more surprised by these Vikings. In fact, I have pretty much given up trying to figure them out. Last year they won three games, and they were lucky to do that. With a win this week they will double that win total, and their season is only half over. NFL Handicapping: Possible Value Teams

There is still a whole lot of football left to play in this regular season in the NFL. For some teams, though, any hopes or dreams — however slim — of playoff contention are long gone. NFL Handicapping: What to Make of Ravens after Devastating Loss
by Trevor Whenham - 10/23/2012

I’m guessing that when the Baltimore Ravens drew up their plans for how they wanted Sunday’s game at Houston to turn out, it didn’t look much like the 43-13 debacle that transpired at Reliant Stadium. If anything, the game wasn’t as close as the score suggests. It was 29-3 at the half, and both teams played the second half like they both knew exactly how it was going to end.

I don’t know about you, but I still act like a 10-year-old when the NFL schedule is released -- i.e., I go through each game and project wins and losses for my team. Of course, it always ends in at least 11 wins and a Super Bowl, but that’s just me (clearly I’m not a Browns fan). With that said, I’m about to do something similar in projecting which NFL team finishes with the worst record this season. Only you can bet on this, thanks to Bovada.

NFL Betting Results of San Francisco Declined Safety
by Trevor Whenham - 10/19/2012

The Seattle Seahawks can’t seem to avoid games that end with strange and controversial twists. What happened on Thursday night in San Francisco was nothing compared to the Golden Tate touchdown to beat the Packers, but it was still bizarre. It also left a lot of bettors angry, and bookmakers pretty happy.

This Week in NFL Betting by the Numbers
by Ricky Dimon - 10/18/2012

From replacement refs, to wild finishes, to impossible comebacks, to standings turned upside down, this NFL season has been even crazier than usual. “Everything just starts snowballing and that’s a great feeling,” Denver safety Jim Leonhard said after his team erased a 24-0 deficit to beat San Diego 35-24 on Monday night. “There’s no better feeling in sports when you know you have completely stole the momentum from a team and it’s going to be very hard for them to come back from. You can’t beat it.”

NFL Picks: Seahawks at 49ers Betting Predictions and Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/17/2012

A few weeks ago it seemed as if the 49ers were going to run away with the NFC West. They have proven that they are mortal, though, and, as a result, the division is totally wide open. That makes this game huge for this time of the year. These two teams are tied with the Cardinals atop the division at 4-2, but Arizona looks like a team that has peaked and is on the decline already. That makes it likely that one of these two squads will win the division, and the winner here will have scored an important victory in that war.

This Week in NFL Betting by the Numbers
by Ricky Dimon - 10/11/2012

The next time I’m inclined to cheer when a player on a team that I support goes down with an injury, I’m going to think long and hard about doing it. After all, I don’t want to be on the bad side of a 6-foot-7, 300-pound offensive tackle who’s spitting fire in the locker room.

NFL Handicapping: Vikings a Legit Super Bowl Contender?
by Trevor Whenham - 10/11/2012

If you had asked me six weeks ago to guess which team would be in first place in the NFC North at this point in the season, I would have needed four guesses before I picked the Vikings. At least. Yet here we are on Oct. 11, and the Vikings are sitting at 4-1, have already exceeded their three wins from last year, and are tied with the Bears at the top of the division.

NFL Picks: Steelers at Titans Predictions and Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/10/2012

Back in 2008 this would have been an epic contest. Back then the Titans were tops in the NFL at 13-3, and the Steelers were just a step behind at 12-4. Looking at these two teams on the field this year you realize just how long ago that was. The Titans have already exceeded their loss total from that season at 1-4, and at 2-2 the Steelers have been just a shadow of what they were in their best years. The problems for neither team are permanent or fatal, but both squads are in a funk — one that would really be helped out by an impressive win here.

Handicapping NFL Teams Under .500
by Trevor Whenham - 10/9/2012

Through five weeks of the NFL season there are 15 teams with records below .500. We know from past experience that being in that boat isn’t ideal at this point of the year, but it isn’t yet fatal. Teams can turn things around if they play much better. Sometimes, though, a bad start is just a clear sign of a bad team.

NFL Handicapping: Green Bay Packers Tough Start
by Trevor Whenham - 10/9/2012

Coming off one of the best seasons we have seen in years, few would have expected the Packers to stumble out of the gate like they have. Their season certainly isn’t lost or anything, but at 2-3 they are in a tougher position than they would have liked to have been through five games — probably by a wide margin.

NFL Betting: Recapping the First Quarter of Season
by Trevor Whenham - 10/2/2012

With the exception of Pittsburgh and Indianapolis, all teams in the NFL have now played a quarter of their NFL schedule. NFL Handicapping: Any Value in Saints Futures Odds?
by Ricky Dimon - 10/2/2012

Bounty-gate was never expected to end well for the New Orleans Saints, but few could have imagined that it would have turned out like this through four weeks of the 2012 NFL season. The Saints, who went 13-3 last year and had compiled a 37-11 record over the course of the three previous regular seasons, are a shocking 0-4. Is another Super Bowl victory out of the question?

NFL Handicapping: Home Underdogs Very Profitable
by Trevor Whenham - 9/28/2012

I’ve seen a lot of talk recently about how strong underdogs have been early in this NFL season. Of most interest from a betting perspective have been the start that home underdogs have gotten off to. There has been a road favorite in 19 games through the first three weeks of the regular season. In 13 of those games the road dog has covered the spread. Even more impressively, 12 of those 13 underdogs have won outright. For moneyline bettors that means a serious payday.

NFL Handicapping: Can 0-3 Saints Save Their Season?
by Trevor Whenham - 9/28/2012

What a mess. The New Orleans Saints came into this season with high expectations. The NFC is very deep, but the Saints were seen by many as a very legitimate Super Bowl contender — an elite squad. NFL Handicapping: Ditch the Assumptions
by Trevor Whenham - 9/27/2012

Most sports bettors are lazy. They get an idea about a team or player’s performance and they stick with it — even if it isn’t particularly accurate any more. Getting stuck on assumptions and outdated opinions is a problem when you are having an argument, but when you are using those assumptions to base your betting decisions on it can be downright expensive.

Handicapping Rough Starts for NFL Teams
by Trevor Whenham - 9/26/2012

Teams don’t want to start out 1-2 in the NFL, but this year it seems like that is the “cool” record. Nearly half of the league — 15 of the 32 teams — have started out at this mark. That’s more than we would expect. Some teams at 1-2 are on the road to futility, while others are going to be headed for the playoffs once they get back on track.

The first edition of the Modell Bowl this year has some added significance — it’s the first one played since Art Modell died earlier this month. Most Cleveland fans probably won’t miss him. Unfortunately, the fans in Cleveland haven’t had much to cheer for since Modell left town, and this year so far has been more of the same. Cleveland is one of only two teams in the league that hasn’t won a game yet.

NFL Betting: Handicapping Jay Cutler and the Bears
by Trevor Whenham - 9/20/2012

Jay Cutler is... unique. He’s far from the best quarterback in the league (with Jason Campbell as his backup I don’t even think he’s the best QB on his team), but the league would unquestionably be less interesting if he wasn’t in it. Of course, I can say that because I have no emotional attachment to the Bears whatsoever, and I rarely feel the need to bet on them.

NFL Handicapping: Are Arizona Cardinals a Contender?
by Trevor Whenham - 9/20/2012

If you tell me that you predicted that the Cardinals would be at 2-0 at this point in the season, and that one of those wins would be at New England, then even though I probably don’t know you I am going to call you a liar. You would have to be a really committed Arizona fan or a pill popper to have seen this one coming. Yet, there are only six unbeaten teams remaining, and one of them is based in Phoenix. NFL Betting: Are Washington Redskins a Super Bowl Contender?
by Trevor Whenham - 9/13/2012

I have now had four days to digest what I saw on opening Sunday of the NFL season in New Orleans when the Redskins manhandled the Saints, but it still doesn’t make any sense. The story of the game heading in was pretty much universally shared. New Orleans was an elite team coming off a tough season that had galvanized them, and they were ready to prove they were among the class of the NFC. Washington had an exciting young QB, but he was still a raw rookie and he had a shocking shortage of depth around him, so it was likely to take time for him to find his wings.

NFL Picks: Bears at Packers Predictions and Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 9/12/2012

The NFC North should be a three-team dogfight this year, so this bitter rivalry has particular importance. A loss would be a real blow for either team — and especially the Packers after their opening setback. After losing only once all of last year, starting off 0-2 would definitely not be the way things were supposed to start out.

NFL Totals Betting: Week 2 Over and Under Predictions
by Dave Schwab - 9/12/2012

The 2012 NFL regular season got underway with a bang last week as the average number of points scored was the most in Week 1 since 1970. NFL Handicapping: Week 1 Bad Quarterback Performances
by Trevor Whenham - 9/11/2012

The opening week of the NFL season was defined by two contrasting themes this year. On one hand there was some shockingly good offensive production on display — five teams scored 40 or more points, and that has never happened before in the opening week. For teams that weren’t so lucky, though, there was some shockingly bad QB play on display.

NFL Handicapping: First Head Coach Fired Props and Prediction

The NFL is not Major League Baseball, the NBA or the NHL. Those leagues’ seasons drag on for months and months, with 162 regular-season games in MLB and 82 in the NBA and NHL. NFL Rookie Quarterbacks Week 1 Props and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 9/7/2012

The 1983 NFL Draft has long been considered the “quarterback draft” as six signal-callers were drafted in the first round that year, oddly all by AFC teams: No. 1 John Elway (Colts, but then traded to Denver; Hall of Famer), No. 7 Todd Blackledge (Chiefs – big mistake), No. 14 Jim Kelly (Bills, Hall of Famer), No. 15 Tony Eason (Patriots, mostly a bust but did lead Pats to a Super Bowl), No. 24 Ken O’Brien (Jets, major reach but was decent for a while) and No. 27 Dan Marino (Dolphins, you may have heard of him; Hall of Famer).

NFL Handicapping: Don’t Put Too Much Stock in Preseason
by Trevor Whenham - 9/4/2012

NFL Preseason records are notoriously hard to trust. Every year we see good teams that don’t care about their preseason performance, and we also see bad teams that shine in August. During the heyday of the Manning Colts, the team was notoriously weak in the preseason but managed to move on and dominate the regular season consistently. The reason for that was simple — neither Manning nor Tony Dungy seemed to care even slightly about the scoreboard until September rolled around. By contrast, in 2008 when the Lions compiled the only 0-16 season in league history they were the only undefeated team in the preseason.

Dallas Cowboys Player Props Odds and Betting Predictions

Give Jerry Jones credit: He keeps the Dallas Cowboys in the national conversation. You could argue that the Cowboys remain “America’s Team” even though they have exactly one playoff victory in the past 15 years: a 2009 wild-card victory over the Eagles. Yet Cowboys games usually are among the highest-rated each season on NFL telecasts. NFL Handicapping: Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks
by Trevor Whenham - 8/30/2012

One of the more interesting developments in this NFL Preseason has been the announcement out of Seattle that Russell Wilson won the three-way race for the starting quarterback gig over free agent addition Matt Flynn and incumbent Tarvaris Jackson. The degree to which people are surprised by this development is directly related to how much they have watched Wilson play. As a Big Ten fan I watched him play a lot at Wisconsin last year. As such, the only thing I was surprised about was that it took him three preseason games to win the job. I thought he might have won the job sooner.

10 Bold NFL Predictions for 2012-13
by Trevor Whenham - 8/30/2012

The Packers had an epic season that ended in a far-from-ideal way. When that happens to a team they can either use it as a motivation or it can set them back. I expect the latter. This team won’t fall off a cliff, and the playoffs are still very possible — perhaps even likely. I just don’t quite think they’ll be the tremendous force that they were last year. They spent most of last season looking a long way from mortal. That won’t be the case this year.

NFL Handicapping: Bad Offensive Lines
by Robert Ferringo - 8/27/2012

Offensive line play is the most underrated aspect of NFL handicapping. While media bobbleheads and square bettors spend a majority of their time talking about quarterbacks, running backs and the next-big-thing at wide receiver – this focus is due in part to America’s “other” gambling obsession, fantasy football – one of the most overlooked issues for any given team is the play of the large mammals along the o-line.

The poor Bengals and Browns have been the whipping boys for Baltimore and Pittsburgh since the league expanded to eight divisions back in 2002. NFL Preseason Handicapping: Common Betting Mistakes
by Trevor Whenham - 8/15/2012

I hate the NFL Preseason. It is, for too many reasons to count, painfully pointless. For bettors who read too much into the games it can also be seriously misleading and, ultimately, very damaging to their bankroll. There are a lot of ways to make handicapping mistakes watching the preseason. Here are three big ones:

How NFL Replacement Officials Will Affect Handicapping and Betting
by Trevor Whenham - 8/15/2012

The NFL seems incapable lately of starting a season without labor issues. Last year it was the players, and this year it is the officials. NFL officials are without a contract, and replacement officials have taken their place in preseason action as the work action has escalated. The betting public is obviously sensitive to NFL labor issues in the first place, so this story is definitely a concern. Given that these replacement officials are far from comparable replacements — Division I officials have pledged not to moonlight, so the league had to scrape the bottom of the barrels to find these guys. That means it’s sure to be a bigger story as time goes along, too.

2012 AFC South Predictions with Odds and Betting Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 8/13/2012

The NFC West has been the worst division in football since the league went to the current eight-division format back in 2002. However, the 2012 season marks one of the few years over the last decade in which one division is so putrid, so rotten, and just hopeless that it actually begins the year recognized as worse than the West. Welcome to the AFC South.

2012 AFC West Predictions with Odds and Betting Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 8/9/2012

The AFC West gave us one of the tightest (and ugliest) division races in recent memory last year, with three teams finishing in a three-way tie at 8-8 and the last place team finishing just a game behind that group at 7-9. While it was fun dusting off the old three-way-tiebreaking procedures, it wasn’t much fun to look at or wager on from week to week.

Alex Smith, QB of the San Francisco 49ers

2012 NFC West Predictions with Odds and Betting Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 8/9/2012

If the NFL is a quarterback league then there is little wonder why the NFC West has been the worst division in the sport since the league went to an eight-team divisional alignment in 2002. Two of the four teams enter 2012 with full-blown quarterback controversies, while the two others enter the year with major question marks about the overall healthy and competency of their signal callers.

2012 Atlanta Falcons Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 8/9/2012

Since then-unknown NFL assistant coach Mike Smith arrived in Atlanta as the head coach before the 2008 season, the Falcons have been one of the league’s top franchises. Thanks in large part to the drafting of quarterback Matt Ryan out of Boston College, the Falcons have had a winning season all four years under Smith and reached the playoffs in three out of four.

NFL Preseason Quarterback Rankings

Seattle Seahawks' running back Marshawn Lynch

2012 Seattle Seahawks Predictions
by Darin Zank - 8/9/2012

The Seattle Seahawks have gone 7-9 back-to-back in their first two seasons under Head Coach Pete Carroll. One of those 7-9 seasons got them to the playoffs, and even to the divisional round. But last season 7-9 got them an early vacation. With the emergence of the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West, Seattle had better up its game. That’s because 7-9 isn’t going to cut it this year, either.

2012 NFC East Predictions with Odds and Betting Preview
by Robert Ferringo - 8/8/2012

The NFC East should once again feature one of the more entertaining and hard-fought division races in football. The Giants, Cowboys, and Eagles will be in a four-month knife fight for control of the most hyped division in the game. As always, the stakes are high. But not just for bragging rights – the winner of the East has gone on to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl four times in the last 12 years, the most in the conference.

Safety Ed Reed of the Baltimore Ravens

2012 Baltimore Ravens Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 8/8/2012

By most accounts, the 2011 season was highly successful for the Baltimore Ravens. They went 12-4 for the second straight year and won the AFC North for the first time since 2006. That earned them their first home playoff game since that season, and Baltimore delivered with 20-13 beatdown of Matt Schuab-less Houston in the divisional round.

2012 Oakland Raiders Predictions
by Nicholas Tolomeo - 8/8/2012

The Oakland Raiders reached Super Bowl XXXVII. That was following the 2002 season. They have not had a winning season since. Bill Callahan coached that Super Bowl bound team. Since then Oakland has seen Head Coaches Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin, Tom Cable and Hue Jackson come and go. The 2001 NFL MVP Rich Gannon quarterbacked that Super Bowl-bound team. Since then Oakland has used Kerry Collins, Aaron Brooks, Marques Tuiasosopo, Josh McCown, Daunte Culpepper, JaMarcus Russell, Andrew Walter, Bruce Gradkowski and Jason Campbell as starting quarterbacks.

Weekly Philadelphia Eagles Betting Picks: Preseason Week 1 vs. Steelers
by Dave Schwab - 8/7/2012

The first full week of the NFL Preseason kicks off this Thursday night. As part of ongoing weekly series written especially for Doc’s Sports Service on the importance of specialization when it comes to wagering on professional football, the following is a preview of my focus team this season, the Philadelphia Eagles. I will provide weekly picks (using Doc’s unit system for money management) for every Eagles game through the preseason all the way to the playoffs and Super Bowl, if they were to make it that far. Their first preseason game is against Pittsburgh this Thursday at Lincoln Financial Field. It is slated to get underway at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcast locally.

NFL Betting Success: How to Win in Preseason
by Jason Sharpe - 8/3/2012

Most folks betting NFL Preseason football use the same type of approach. They will tell you to find out what the quarterback rotations are for each team, which star players are going to play, who is going to sit out, what the coaches ATS records are, etc…. Though those are good strategies to use, the problem with doing things this way is that you are doing the exact same thing that the other bettors are doing, and doing things the same as others won’t give you an edge over the oddsmakers in the long run.

San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews

2012 San Diego Chargers Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 8/3/2012

Whenever a sportsbook releases a prop on the first NFL head coach to be fired in 2012, I will be utterly shocked if San Diego’s Norv Turner isn’t the favorite. Has any team done less with more talent the past four years than San Diego? The Bolts were 8-8 in 2008 a year after reaching the AFC title game (they did still win the weak AFC West that year).

Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts

2012 Indianapolis Colts Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 8/3/2012

In my opinion, the 2012 Indianapolis Colts are in a way both the easiest and the hardest team to preview for the upcoming season. I say easiest because we obviously know the Colts are going to stink in 2012 after plummeting to a 2-14 record last season without the injured Peyton Manning taking a snap – and Indy being woefully unprepared with a legitimate backup.

2012 Cincinnati Bengals Predictions and Odds to Win AFC North

For just the third time since 1990, the Cincinnati Bengals made it to the NFL Playoffs last year. The Bengals lost, 31-10, to the Houston Texans in their playoff opener, but the season was still a major success. Before the season, the Bengals were expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL. The team snuck up on a lot of people in 2011, and they did it with some solid young talent.

Reggie Bush of the Miami Dolphins

2012 Miami Dolphins Predictions and AFC East Betting Odds

Joe Philbin was a very good offensive coordinator in Green Bay — a big reason why Aaron Rodgers is the player he is. Now, at age 51, he has his chance to be a head coach for the first time. He has a lot less to work with here than he did in Wisconsin, so if he manages to make this team respectable early in his tenure then we’ll really know that he has a magic touch.

Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson

2012 Tennessee Titans Predictions and Super Bowl Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 7/28/2012

A lot of teams that we have previewed either have one clear starting quarterback and questions around the backup or no starting choice that is particularly attractive. The Titans are in the luxurious position of having two guys who are likely capable of making a little noise under center. They are at opposite ends of their career as well to add some intrigue to the race.

Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos

2012 Denver Broncos Predictions and AFC West Betting Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 7/26/2012

Short version of the preview — the team replaced the most controversial quarterback of his generation with one of the best of any generation and they should be glad they did. That’s a loaded opinion, of course. There will be many who agree that getting rid of Tim Tebow was exactly the right thing to do — that he was not the choice to lead the franchise in the long-term, and despite his skill set the mistake was made when they acquired him in the first place.

St Louis Rams' quarterback Sam Bradford

2012 St. Louis Rams Predictions and NFL Futures Odds
by Aaron Smith - 7/26/2012

It seemed the St. Louis Rams finally had things moving in the right direction. Steve Spagnuolo had taken this team from one win in 2009 to seven wins in 2010. The Rams nearly made the playoffs in 2010 with that 7-9 record in the NFC West. Going into the 2011 season, many experts thought this team had a chance to finally finish with a winning record. Needless to say, things didn’t go as planned.

2012 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions and Odds to Win AFC West

Every NFL team has to deal with injuries – it’s part of the game. But perhaps no club’s season was derailed earlier in 2011 by major injuries than the Kansas City Chiefs’. Fresh off a surprising AFC West title in 2010, many had the Chiefs as a chic pick to reach the AFC title game a year ago. But stud running back Jamaal Charles, who was second in the NFL in rushing in 2010, was lost for the season early in Week 2. Also going down for the year were star tight end Tony Moeaki (in the preseason finale) and Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry (Week 1). Without them, K.C. started 0-3 and was outscored by a record 99-10 in the first two losses.

Randy Moss is back. He’s with the 49ers after a one-year retirement, and he has looked good in the limited action he has seen so far in camps. The biggest-name free agent in NFL history has chosen a home: Peyton Manning is going to be a Denver Bronco. Was it the wisest move? Perhaps not. After all, the San Francisco 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game a season ago, have one of the NFL’s best defenses, already have signed Randy Moss and play in an easier division than do the Broncos.
