NBA Handicapping: Against the Spread Quick Facts
by George Monroy - 1/8/2013

Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng

The NBA season is in full stride. And with the NFL winding down, pro basketball will finally begin to take center stage over the next five months. For those bettors that do not focus on the NBA until after football has ended, a lot has happened over the first third of the season. The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t very good, the Los Angeles Clippers may be the best team in the league, and the Memphis Grizzlies have been covering spreads left and right. Now that basketball will be the only thing to bet on in a few short weeks, let’s try and catch up with what has been going on betting-wise in the NBA. Here is a quick cheat sheet of a few important betting trends for the first third of the season.

Five best ATS records:

Golden State Warriors: 20-11
Los Angeles Clippers: 22-13
Memphis Grizzlies: 19-12-2
San Antonio Spurs: 22-14-1
Denver Nuggets: 22-14

Five worst ATS records:

Chicago Bulls: 12-20
Los Angeles Lakers: 13-20
Charlotte Bobcats: 13-20
Boston Celtics: 13-18-3
Atlanta Hawks: 13-18-1

Five best home ATS records:

Los Angeles Clippers: 15-5
Denver Nuggets: 10-3
Golden State Warriors: 10-5
Utah Jazz: 10-5
San Antonio Spurs: 10-5-1

Five worst home ATS records:

Cleveland Cavaliers: 3-12
Chicago Bulls: 4-14
Atlanta Hawks: 5-11-1
New Orleans Hornets: 6-11
Milwaukee Bucks: 6-10-1

Five best away ATS records:

Orlando Magic: 11-4
New Orleans Hornets: 11-6
Golden State Warriors: 10-6-2
Memphis Grizzlies: 9-6
Milwaukee Bucks: 9-6

Five worst away ATS records:

Los Angeles Lakers: 5-10
Utah Jazz: 7-13-1
Boston Celtics: 6-10-2
Miami Heat: 5-8
Portland Trail Blazers: 7-11

Quick notes: The Chicago Bulls have one of the best records in the league at 19-13 and currently sit in the four spot in the Eastern Conference, but they have the absolute worst ATS record in the league. The Bulls may be a bit overrated by the oddsmakers, as they have one of the worst ATS home records and are only 7-13 as an ATS favorite.

The New Orleans Hornets, on the other hand, have one of the worst records in the league at 9-25, but they have a respectable 17-17 ATS record and have one of the best away ATS records in the NBA. The Hornets are probably a bit underrated by the oddsmakers, as they have been covering a lot of road spreads that, at times, have reached into double-digits.

The Miami Heat have not been playing spectacular basketball over the last few months, but, even with a few lackluster performances, their road ATS record sticks out like a sore thumb. The Heat have been receiving too much respect by the oddsmakers, and they continue to see inflated road lines, which the public will probably continue to bet.
