ESPN.com will be running a Tank Rank all season, listing the Top 10 NBA teams each week that are in tank mode to ensure they get into the draft lottery for the loaded 2014 class headed by super-freshmen Jabari Parker (Duke), Andrew Wiggins (Kansas) and Julius Randle (Kentucky). I think Parker goes first now, but that's a story for another day.

The St. Louis Blues will be closing out the year with four of their next five games on the road. However, that road-heavy schedule is nothing for St. Louis to be worried about because the team is healthy, already has 50 points through 34 games this season, and has a lot to be excited about heading into 2014. St. Louis is tied for the second-best Stanley Cup title odds with the Chicago Blackhawks, according to Sportsbook.ag, and only trails the Pittsburgh Penguins as the favorite to win it all.

Free NBA Picks: Suns at Nuggets Odds
by Aaron Smith - 12/19/2013
The Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets enter Friday night’s meeting with identical 14-10 records. Before the season started, many expected the Suns to be among the worst teams in the NBA. Denver had relatively high expectations since they did win 57 games a year ago.

Free NHL Picks: Islanders at Rangers Odds
by George Monroy - 12/19/2013
New York fans may wish that Friday’s in-state rivalry game between the Islanders and Rangers meant something a little more than a matchup between two slumping teams. The Islanders have the second-fewest points in the entire NHL and are in the middle of a brutal slump that has seen only one victory in 14 games. Even worse, the team has not won in regulation since Nov. 12, which was nearly six weeks ago. If there were any silver lining for the Islanders it would be that they have at least been competitive over their last two matchups and sent both games into overtime.

Free NBA Picks: Spurs at Warriors Odds and Predictions

The Golden State Warriors were a chic pick to win the Western Conference this season after the emergence of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson a season ago led the Dubs to the Western Conference semifinals. There they were beaten in six games by San Antonio, Thursday's opponent. That series very easily could have ended differently had Golden State not gagged away a 16-point lead with four minutes left in the fourth quarter of the opener and lost in double-overtime despite a superstar-making 44 points from Curry.

Free NHL Picks: Flames at Red Wings Odds
by George Monroy - 12/18/2013
When the Detroit Red Wings get into a slump, they really get into a slump. The team is currently in the middle of a six-game losing streak to go along with the four- and seven-game losing streaks it already owns through 36 games this season. Detroit’s roster has been crippled by injury over the last month as the team is currently missing many of its key players. The Red Wings’ center and team captain Henrik Zetterberg has not played in over two weeks due to a herniated disk in his back.

Free College Basketball Picks: UCLA vs. Duke Odds
by George Monroy - 12/18/2013
The UCLA Bruins are the No. 3 scoring team in the nation and have been lighting up the scoreboard on their way to an impressive 9-1 record. The Bruins average a whopping 89.1 points per game with 18.9 assists on those baskets. The team has not had a chance to showcase its talent against a highly-ranked school yet, but it will look to put on a show when it faces its biggest challenge to date in the Duke Blue Devils on Thursday night.

Free NBA Picks: Pistons at Celtics Odds
by Aaron Smith - 12/17/2013
The Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics have had some highly-entertaining battles down through the years. While they aren’t necessarily bitter rivals, these two teams have duked it out for Eastern Conference supremacy many times in the past.

Free College Basketball Picks: Texas at North Carolina Odds
by George Monroy - 12/17/2013
The No. 14 North Carolina Tar Heels might be getting the Rodney Dangerfield treatment—they get no respect. The team has already beaten three Top-12 teams, including the Louisville Cardinals, Michigan State Spartans and the Kentucky Wildcats. And to top it all off, North Carolina still has to face the Texas Longhorns on Wednesday night. If the Tar Heels can come away with another huge victory, it’s almost certain that they will crack the Top 10 in next week’s rankings.

Free NHL Picks: Penguins at Rangers Odds
by George Monroy - 12/17/2013
The Pittsburgh Penguins are simply chugging along through the season, racking up wins and setting themselves up for the playoffs. The team has the most points in the Eastern Conference and has already built a huge gap between its closest division competitor, the Washington Capitals. Sidney Crosby and the Penguins lead the Metropolitan by 10 points and are not planning on relinquishing that lead any time soon.

Free NBA Picks: Pelicans at Warriors Odds
by Alan Matthews - 12/16/2013
In some ways, it feels almost easy to be an armchair general manager in the NBA. Just pick five guys who can score and throw them out there. Alas, nothing's that easy. That brings me to the New Orleans Pelicans. They have five pretty big-name guys they can roll out there: Anthony Davis, Tyreke Evans, Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson and Jrue Holiday. I'd want any of them on my team. However, just getting guys who can fill up the bucket doesn't win games. Things like defense, rebounding an intangibles matter. And, of course, there's the injury factor.

Free NHL Picks: Jets at Sabres Odds
by George Monroy - 12/16/2013
The Buffalo Sabres are bad—but when I state “bad,” what I really mean is historically bad. The team is on pace to earn the fewest points during a season in over 13 years, and it might not even crack the 40-point mark if things do not get better. Buffalo’s management has probably already given up on the year and may be looking toward next season, but for the players and coaching staff, things are simply getting embarrassing.

Free College Basketball Picks: Iowa at Iowa State Odds
by George Monroy - 12/13/2013
The No. 23 Iowa Hawkeyes are about to play perhaps their most contentious game of the season when they face off against the in-state rival and No. 17 Iowa State Cyclones on Friday night. Both teams started out the year at an excellent pace and are leading their respective Big Ten and Big 12 Conferences. The Hawkeyes have already played 10 games this season but have yet to play a ranked team.

This rings true in Major League Baseball, the NHL and NBA: It's always wise to bet against a team in its final game of a lengthy road trip. Why? Obviously it's harder to play in front of hostile crowds as it is. Add in the fact the guys are tired -- most road trips are very compacted -- and emotionally spent by the end of the trip. Plus, they can see the light at the end of the tunnel and will be back home soon. It's just human nature to sleepwalk in that finale of a trip.

Free NHL Picks: Canadiens at Islanders Odds
by George Monroy - 12/13/2013
The Montreal Canadiens are right in the Atlantic Division race despite losing back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers. The Canadiens went on a stretch where they won eight of nine games and rocketed up the Eastern Conference Playoff standings and still firmly sit in the third spot.

Free College Football Picks: Army vs. Navy Odds and Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 12/12/2013
The last game of the regular season in college football doesn’t top the charts in terms of significance or, most often, quality of play. When it comes to pageantry and tradition, though, it’s hard to beat the Army-Navy game. The game was first played in 1890, has been played continuously since 1930, and this year will be the 114th meeting. Navy has a 57-49-7 edge in the series, but they have gained their long-term advantage thanks to a current 11-game winning streak — the longest in the history of the series.

Free NBA Picks: Lakers at Thunder Odds
by Aaron Smith - 12/12/2013
The Los Angeles Lakers, with Kobe Bryant on the court, will travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder Friday night in a marquee matchup. Bryant missed the Lakers first 19 games before returning for the last two. The Lakers were unable to win either of those games, and they’ll have an even tougher matchup Friday night in Oklahoma City.

Free NBA Picks: Rockets at Trail Blazers Odds
by Alan Matthews - 12/11/2013
If you had told me before the season that when I previewed a Dec. 12 game between Houston and Portland one of those teams would be leading the ultra-deep Western Conference, I would have said "yeah, that wouldn't surprise me." Of course, I would have expected it to be the Rockets and not the Blazers.
