Your best source for winning sports picks including MLB baseball picks, NFL picks, and expert college football game predictions is now available.A Note From Doc ![]() Our company opened for business back in 1971. We were only one of a small number of sports handicapping services in existence at that time, and most of those have now fallen by the wayside. When you have been in the sports handicapping industry for more than 30 years, you definitely see some major changes. Weekly MLB Underdog Reportby Matt Foust - 08/29/2008 It looked like somebody had called off the dogs last week (just 33 percent win percentage), but they returned this week and with some bite too. This was really somewhat of a surprise, but there are a few things that can account for it. First, there were a number of mediocre to poor teams facing poor teams (i.e. Rangers at Royals) - somebody has to win, right? Second and almost the reverse of the first point, there were a number of quality teams facing quality teams (i.e. Rays at White Sox). Third, there was some streaking going on, and mostly by teams that have not played well this year (i.e. Giants, Rockies, Indians, and Nationals). Nationals? Streaking? Yes, winning five out of 10 is the Washington version of streaking. Read more about Weekly Underdog Report. MLB Trendspottingby Josh Nagel - 08/29/2008 It's an interesting paradox of professional sports that this year's pennant races in Major League Baseball are infused with young, talented and low-paid teams that are thriving amid the pressure while higher-priced teams with higher-paid and bigger-name stars are struggling. Read more about MLB Trendspotting. Yankees Rallyby Matt Severance - 08/29/2008 One of the most amazing streaks in baseball history appears likely to end this year. The New York Yankees enter the weekend 10.5 games out of first place in the AL East, closer to last than first, and six games out of a wild-card spot as they attempt to reach the postseason for a 14th-consecutive season. Read more about Yankees Rally. 2008 Dallas Cowboys Predictionsby Indian Cowboy - 08/29/2008 I expect the Cowboys to do just as well as they did last year. With a new stadium on the horizon, the fans continue to expect more and more from this team. This team has all the elements in place but has still been unable to bring it together. However, it's important to note that Dallas is closer than ever to being able to go back to the promise land since its previous dynasty ended. One thing is for certain, however. This team continues to be "America's Team". After all, the media coverage will continue to focus squarely on this squad with headliners such as Adam Jones, Tony Romo and Terrell Owens in the mix. Read more about 2008 Dallas Cowboys Predictions. 2008 New York Giants Predictionsby Indian Cowboy - 08/29/2008 Some say this team's accomplishment last year was a fluke and I could not disagree with them more. This is the same Giants team that during the playoffs went on the road to defeat the Bucs outright, then went on the road to beat the Cowboys outright, then went on the road to beat Favre and the Packers in Lambeau Field outright and then defeated a New England team that was on the grips of making unprecedented history. After all, the Giants went into the Super Bowl as 12-point underdogs and won outright, which continues to show the public's lack of appreciation for what this team had done leading up to that game. Read more about 2008 New York Giants Predictions. 2008 Washington Redskins Predictionsby Indian Cowboy - 08/29/2008 Every year folks have the Washington Redskins as the dark horse in the NFC East. These individuals continue to proclaim that each year is the supposed year the Redskins will break out and become a Super Bowl contender. Yet, the team always underachieves. Granted, the Redskins have gotten a bit closer each year and last year as this team was gelling very well towards the close of the season. Having said that, this team didn't make too many changes from last year as they feel like what they have is good enough to get it done. Frankly, I agree with the ownership as they will be better this year than last. Read more about 2008 Washington Redskins Predictions. 2008 Philadelphia Eagles Predictionsby Indian Cowboy - 08/29/2008 I feel for Donovan McNabb. Here you have a guy that has been the essence of a warrior for this Philadelphia Eagles. In many ways, he has meant to his team what Brett Favre meant to the Packers - minus the Super Bowl Championship. The Eagles did not do as much as they needed to compete within their own division, nevertheless compete for a Super Bowl ring. They did little to upgrade a team that could be so much better if they had that one additional element. Heck, considering that when this team did upgrade and get a notable receiver in Owens, it should not be a shock that they were one possession from winning the Super Bowl. It's now close enough that I am counting down by hours now instead of days. For people like me who think that college football is the greatest sport in existence then any games are welcomed and worth watching. More passive fans might say that things don't get interesting until later in the season when conference play starts. That might sort of be true for college basketball, but it certainly isn't true in football. Every game matters, and many teams face stiff tests right out of the gates. There are all sorts of intriguing games out there this weekend, but look at five that both provide a real challenge for bettors and will give us a good sense of what the season might hold for the teams involved: Read more about Five Intriguing Games. Parlays Should Mostly Be Avoidedby T.O. Whenham - 08/28/2008 Football season is here, and that means that many of you will be tempted to bet parlays. The schedules and nature of the sport make parlays very attractive to many football bettors. Most seasoned and successful bettors, though, generally avoid parlays because they don't provide the best means of making money over the long term. You need to decide for yourself if parlays are the right things for you or not. The advantages they present for you may very well outweigh the well-documented setbacks. The important thing isn't to use or avoid parlay bets at all costs. Read more about Avoid Parlays. Record Keeping Important Factor In Handicappingby T.O. Whenham - 08/28/2008 If you want to do just one thing this season to make yourself a significantly more successful bettor with minimal effort, what would you do? Learning to handicap better would be one thing, but that's much easier said than done. Developing better money management skills is never a bad idea. The single biggest, and easiest, impact you can make, though, is by improving your record keeping. Read more about Record Keeping. Setting Goals For Football Seasonby T.O. Whenham - 08/28/2008 The football season is about to start. If you aren't ready for it you can burn through your bankroll before Donovan McNabb has his inevitable season ending injury (I put the over/under at Week 6, by the way). Before the insanity of the season arrives, it's a very good idea to take some time and set some goals for what you want to accomplish as a bettor during the season. This is a great way to get focused for the long, tough season, and it gives you a better chance of staying on track and avoiding costly errors. Read more about Setting Goals. Pepsi 500 Odds and Predictionsby Christopher G. Shepard - 08/28/2008 Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards had better be on their best behavior as they are now on six races probation by NASCAR officials for a post-race incident involving the two drivers and it all starts this week at California Speedway for the penultimate race before the Chase begins as Edwards will look for a season sweep at Fontana this Sunday, at 7 p.m. for the Pepsi 500. Bet the Super Bowl Rematch Tonight at Sportsbetting.comby SPORTSBETTING.COM - 08/28/2008 If you think about it in a big picture way, the New England Patriots really had a fantastic 2007 season, despite the way it ended. Read more about Super Bowl Rematch. 2008 MAC Predictionsby Matt Severance - 08/27/2008 The Mid-American Conference always seems to pull a handful of upsets of BCS conference teams each season, especially against the Big Ten. Expect more of the same this year as the MAC could be the strongest its been in years with several veteran-laden squads. Yet perhaps the best part of this conference is that any team could win the title in any season. That said, we'll give it our best shot with 2008 MAC predictions: Read more about MAC Predictions. Finding the Right Football Contestby Josh Nagel - 08/27/2008 It's that time of the year when every football fan, no matter how passionate, is looking to book some action for the upcoming season. Some play free fantasy football for the pure entertainment value, or throw down a few bucks at the weekly NFL office pool. Read more about Football Contest. UTEP at Buffalo Kicks Off the CFB Seasonby T.O. Whenham - 08/27/2008 After nearly eight months of counting the days, college football season is back. Less than 24 hours from now teams will be taking the field, and the glorious, too short season will be underway. The long drought ends tomorrow when the first 14 games of the year are played. Four teams are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. ET, and if all goes cording to plan then the University of Texas-El Paso and Buffalo will kick off the season a couple of minutes before anyone else. That's not the flashiest game there is, and it certainly isn't the one that most people are looking forward to this weekend. It does, however, have the potential to be an intriguing game. Read more about UTEP-Buffalo. The AP Top 25 Vs. the Odds Pollby Matt Foust - 08/27/2008 Everybody waits with anticipation for the AP Top 25 to be unveiled; it has historically been viewed as the best indicator of what can be expected of teams during the season. However, is it the most accurate representation of college football's elite? It could be argued that the sportbooks are a better gauge of how a season will unfold. Just for grins, let's look at the AP Top 25 and see how it compares to the 25 teams BetUS has given the least favorable National Championship odds. The team's ranking for the futures odds poll is in parentheses. Read more about Odds Poll. Ryan Will Take Rookie Bumps in Atlantaby T.O. Whenham - 08/27/2008 You didn't have to have a PhD in football to figure out that Matt Ryan was going to be the starting quarterback sooner rather than later in Atlanta. After all, with all due respect to Chris Redman and Joey Harrington, the Falcons don't have a lot of other options. They've paid a fortune to Ryan, they've based their marketing around him, and he is obviously the future of a team that desperately needs to forget about the recent past. What has been a bit of a surprise, though, is how quickly and seemingly effortlessly Ryan has adapted to the NFL. Read more about Matt Ryan. Look for Blowouts in Week 1 That Could Cause Low Totalsby Nicholas Tolomeo - 08/27/2008 The College Football season opens Thursday and with it, the return of totals reaching into the 60s and 70s. The general consensus among people who watch the game closely is that the defense starts out ahead and the offense usually catches up to speed by the third or fourth week of the season. Read more about Week 1 Totals. Usain Bolt More Impressive Than Michael Phelps?by T.O. Whenham - 08/27/2008 What is there to possibly say about Usain Bolt that hasn't already been said? The guy is an incredible freak of an athletic specimen, and I have been having a constant debate with myself since the end of the 200m as to whether his accomplishments are more impressive than Michael Phelps'. For the record, I lean towards yes, but not with much conviction given the immensity of the challenge of figuring it out and the enormity of what Phelps did in his own right. Try to recall the confusion, the uncertainty, the hormones, the narcotics, and the litany of questionable decisions in dicey situations. I'm certain at that period you had a hard enough time trying to predict what you were going to do from minute to minute. So the prospect of trying your hand at college football futures betting has to seem like a harrowing exercise since it basically requires you to try to predict the actions of several hundred college kids over the course of the next four months. Read more about College Football Futures Betting. 2008 WAC Predictionsby Matt Severance - 08/26/2008 The Western Athletic Conference has produced the past two BCS-crashers in Hawaii and Boise State, making it the most high profile of the mid-major conferences. While Boise upset Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, Hawaii was waxed in last season's Sugar Bowl by Georgia, leaving the conference again looking for respect with the big boys in 2008. Read more about WAC Predictions. 2008 Conference USA Predictionsby Matt Severance - 08/26/2008 So you may not have noticed, but suddenly Conference USA has morphed into the old WAC. That's right, some of the nation's most pass-happy, high-flying offenses now reside in C-USA, and all that conference did during the offseason was import three more offensive-minded head coaches in June Jones at SMU, Larry Fedora at Southern Miss and Kevin Sumlin at Houston. Read more about Conference USA Predictions. Handicapping the Manning and Brady Injuriesby T.O. Whenham - 08/26/2008 In a strange parallel, neither of the two best quarterbacks in the NFL have taken a snap in a preseason game. Peyton Manning is trying to recover from a knee surgery, while Tom Brady has been hobbled by a foot problem. Both players are expected back for the start of the regular season, but they both could be rusty. Determining how to deal with the two of them could be a major challenge for NFL handicappers. Read more about Manning and Brady Injuries. Dancing With the Stars Odds Posted by BetUSby BetUS - 08/26/2008 Dancing With The Stars has become an absolute phenomenon with fans flocking in record numbers to watch, and old stars looking for a re-boost in their career jockeying for position to get picked to be on the show. From retired athletes to "where are they now?" actors - the show offers a plethora of familiar faces in odd places which adds to the allure. Read more about Dancing With the Stars Odds. Doc's Sports All-American Teamby Robert Ferringo - 08/25/2008 Money players are the guys who come through. Money players are the guys who make a difference. Money players are the guys who move the line depending on if they are healthy, or angry, or motivated. Money players are the guys that turn everything around when you are in your most desperate, distraught, distressed state each weekend. Read more about All-American Team. Making the Jump to Division IAby Nicholas Tolomeo - 08/25/2008 For the first time in six years Division IA football will be getting a new full-fledged football team. After a sample of six games last season against teams from the highest division, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will jump into a full 10-game foray against Division IA teams, playing as an independent. Read more about Division 1A. 2008 Big Ten Predictions by Doc - 08/24/2008 Here at Doc's Sports the Big Ten has been our bread and butter since the early 1970s. Our main office is located in Badgers Country in the proverbial heart of the Big Ten. This is the conference that we specialize in and the one where most of our big predictions will come from this season, as has been the case for many seasons past. Our Big Ten Game of the Year is what put us on the map (we won this pick a record 19-straight years at one point and moved the Las Vegas line a touchdown at the height of the streak). Here are my 2008 Big Ten predictions on how I see the conference shaping up: Read more about Big Ten Predictions. 2008 Minnesota Vikings Predictions by Indian Cowboy - 08/24/2008 Given that I still don't believe in this team's quarterback situation, I have this team at 9-7, similar to the Bucs in the NFC South. In fact, I expect this division to be very similar to the NFC South in many ways. After all, I believe there will be three teams up top around the .500 mark as this should be a tight division all the way through with one straggler, although the Bears are about 2-3 games better than the Falcons this year in my opinion. Ironically, that might be enough to win the division as I feel the Packers are in for a very underperforming year. As for the Vikings, this team was 8-8 last year, the question is have they gotten better? Read more about 2008 Minnesota Vikings Predictions. 2008 Green Bay Packers Predictions by Indian Cowboy - 08/24/2008 This team was a dominant 13-3 last year and was rolling to their own undefeated season until they met the Cowboys in Week 8. Nevertheless, this team rolls into this season with high hopes. However, they are missing one key ingredient, the man that made it happen for them. Keep in mind that Favre was not everything on this team. Read more about 2008 Green Bay Packers Predictions. 2008 Detroit Lions Predictions by Indian Cowboy - 08/24/2008 The only good thing that the Lions have going for them this year is that they still might be better than the Bears. This team did much better last year considering they won seven ballgames. Heck, they finished better than the Bears in the division and finished the same as the Saints, the team they beat the previous year to get to the Super Bowl. However, when the Lions get beat, they get pummeled. Read more about 2008 Detroit Lions Predictions. 2008 Chicago Bears Predictions by Indian Cowboy - 08/24/2008 Do I really think the Bears are going to do this bad again this year? Yes. This team still has no quarterback and last year simply proves that the Rex Grossman year that took this team to the Super Bowl was indeed a fluke. No more Griese to look over Grossman's shoulders but, at the end of the day, this defense has gotten a bit older and slower and the results are showing. Whenham - 08/24/2008 If you are a baseball, basketball or hockey bettor then sooner or later you are going to have to develop a betting strategy for 7-game series. They are an inevitable, and exciting, part of the postseason in all three sports. If you just treat them like any other set of games, though, then you are heading for trouble. Expensive trouble. The structure of the series, the pressure, and the rewards of experience all provide unique challenges for handicappers. Here are six tips to help you develop your own betting strategy for 7-game series. Read more about Big East Predictions. Brett Favre Effect by Matt Foust - 08/23/2008 The Brett Favre saga related to his "un-retirement" seemed as though it would never end. Everyday, all day was a Favreapalooza. Well, now that he has finally left Green Bay, now that the party is over, let's talk about him some more. We all know in our hearts we don't want it to end, we want Favre to play until he's 85 years old just so we can talk about him. Seriously though, now that the dust has settled, what does this move mean for the teams involved; what does it mean for the AFC East and what does it mean for Favre? Read more about Brett Favre. NFL Salary Cap Rules by T.O. Whenham - 08/23/2008 The NFL salary cap is one of the most confusing things in all of sports. The actual NFL salary cap rules aren't that complicated, or at least they don't seem to be, but the application and discussion of them as they are applied by teams is enough to put anyone to sleep. In this age when everyone is so concerned about the economics of sports, the salary cap is discussed at least as much as statistics or the play on the field. There's not much we can do about that, but at least if we understand the basic NFL salary cap rules we can understand a bit of what people are talking about. Read more about NFL Salary Cap Rules. NFL Top Salary - Highest Paid NFL Player by T.O. Whenham - 08/23/2008 You don't really need to feel too sorry for any NFL player on payday. Even the most lowly of rookies is guaranteed to make $285,000 so they aren't poor by any means. Some players, though, make more money than many small countries. Whenham - 08/23/2008 Whether you are a new sports bettor or a seasoned one, chances are pretty good that you're getting excited about football season. For many people, baseball season is too long ad monotonous to keep their attention, so they keep their betting money mostly in their wallets until football season rolls around. That leads right into college basketball and the heart of the NBA season, and before you know it it's summer again. If you are one of those people who needs to get themselves into, or back into, betting shape again, here are eight sports betting hints you will want to keep in mind; they could be the difference between a winning season and an expensive one: Read more about Sports Betting Hints. 2008 Big 12 Predictions by Robert Ferringo - 08/22/2008 Whether it's binge drinking, doing hard drugs, or quarterbacking, there is no substitute for experience. And with that maxim in mind I can, without a shadow of a doubt, make this prediction: it's going to be a hell of a party in the Big 12 this year. Read more about Big 12 Predictions. Weekly MLB Underdog Report by Matt Foust - 08/22/2008 Yes, we are back after a few weeks off and we're ready to check in on the dogs. This will be our ninth week of evaluation and it will be interesting to see what changes recent trades, injuries and minor league call-ups produce in the next few weeks. I think we'll probably start to see home underdog percentages fade as home dogs are usually poor teams anyway and they get even worse toward the end of the season. They typically dump players at the deadline and bring in some prominent minor leaguers to get some time in the big leagues. That trend may have started this week. Read more about Weekly Underdog Report. Momentum or Hangover for NFL and CFB Champs? by Nicholas Tolomeo - 08/22/2008 The effect of playing in the Super Bowl the previous year has an undeniable effect on teams, both winning and losing, into the next season. Whether it affects the actual teams, the oddsmaker's original line, or the public perception that eventually moves the line is debatable. However, one thing that is not is that the trend is there. Shepard - 08/22/2008 The draws have been selected for the 2008 US Open Championships which will have players ready to serve for the fourth and final leg of the Grand Slam Series from Aug. 25 to Sept. 6 as another Nadal-Federer final is possible. However, we won't see another Williams-sisters Final slam thanks to the new WTA rankings that has the sisters potentially meeting in the quarterfinals. Read more about US Open Tennis Predictions. Sharpie 500 Odds and Predictions by Christopher G. Shepard - 08/22/2008 Carl Edwards did his customary fifth back flip of the season after he won at Michigan last week as he appears to be one of the few drivers to give Kyle Busch a challenge for the Sprint Cup this year. They'll duel it out under the lights at Bristol Motor Speedway at 7 p.m. on Saturday and the race will be televised by the ESPN. No, I mean, they REALLY love Jesus and college football. And it may not even be in that order. Read more about SEC Predictions. Handicapping NFL Strength of Schedule by Matt Foust - 08/21/2008 Many pro football handicappers use the NFL strength of schedule rankings to help them prepare for the football season. It's easy to calculate and it can be a nice tool to use for research purposes. However, it is not the absolute difference maker between a winning and a losing season, both for the bettor and for the team. It can, with a little digging, yield some valuable clues, though. Read more about NFL Strength of Schedule. MLB Trendspotting by Josh Nagel - 08/21/2008 With the regular season winding down and the pennant races heating up, this is a good time to hone in on a few teams that should bring in good money down the stretch. The teams that added a key player near the trade deadline, and are clearly serious about contending, historically play with a greater sense of urgency and intensity by comparison to those who didn't. Some of this already has taken shape, as teams such as the Dodgers and White Sox appear to be playing with a renewed intensity. Read more about MLB Trendspotting. NFL Facts by T.O. Whenham - 08/21/2008 NFL fans love NFL facts. At least some do. If you are one of them then this article is for you. Whenham - 08/21/2008 Most football fans don't put too much thought into where the schedule for their favorite teams come from or how it is determined. They just look at it when it comes out, celebrate the easy games, moan about the tough ones, and get ready for the season. The NFL schedule formula used to determine which teams play when, though, is a surprisingly complicated formula. It doesn't really matter to sports fans or bettors in the grand scheme of things, but it's still good to know how these things work. Here, then, is the NFL schedule formula. It is obviously subject to change, though the current formula will be used at least through the end of the 2009 season. Read more about NFL Schedule Formula. How Sports Betting Works by T.O. Whenham - 08/21/2008 Once you understand how sports betting works it's really not that complicated. For someone who is new to it all, though, it can seem overwhelming. If you are a sports fan who is interested in making some bets, you should make sure to get some basic knowledge first. If you just throw your money around blindly without really knowing what you are doing then you will make mistakes and you'll lose money. Here, then, is a basic introduction to how sports betting works. How to pick winners is another thing entirely. Read more about How Sports Betting Works. Cy Young Award Betting by SPORTSBETTING.COM - 08/21/2008 The Major League Baseball season continues its slow march to the playoffs, with a little over a month worth of games left on the schedule. Betting College Football Conference Winners - Odds and Analysis by Robert Ferringo - 08/20/2008 If you are a college football futures bettor, or an aspiring futures bettor, there is one very important word to keep in mind: value. Trying to project out an entire season - which is essentially what you are trying to do by making a futures wager on conference champions - is a difficult task. So the main thing is to not try to bet the team that you think will win, but instead try to weigh the likelihood of a school taking a title vs. their actual payout. Overpriced and Undervalued in BCS Conferences by Matt Severance - 08/20/2008 Here's a look at an overpriced and undervalued team in each of the six major college football conferences this season. All odds to win the conference are from Bodog. Read more about BCS Conferences. 2008 Pac-10 Predictions by Robert Ferringo - 08/20/2008 In 2007 I proclaimed that the Pac-10 would battle the SEC for the title of the top conference in the country and they did not disappoint. Their 5-3 mark against other BCS Big 6 schools was the top mark in the country, and they backed that up with a 4-2 straight-up bowl record and a 21-13 mark against the spread in all nonconference games. And although they didn't overwhelm with the number of teams (four) they put in the Associated Press Top 25 at the end of the year, from top to bottom, there were few teams with the talent and depth of the group from the Left Coast. In fact, if anyone argued that it was anything other than the stunning dominance of Michael Phelps then they have a screw or six loose. Unless you have been living under a rock, and it would have to be a really big one, then you know what Phelps has done - the swimmer won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics to beat Mark Spitz' longstanding and once-thought unbreakable record of seven set in 1972. Along the way, Phelps set world records in seven events, and had to settle for just an Olympic record in the eighth. Needless to say, this guy is pretty good. Read more about Michael Phelps. 2008 ACC Predictions by Robert Ferringo - 08/19/2008 When the Atlantic Coast Conference raided the Big East for three of its best teams a few short years ago it was supposed to turn the ACC into a college football power. Instead, the addition of those traitorous heathens has simply cast a cloak of bad karma on the league and helped morph it into the most overrated league in the country. Read more about ACC Predictions. Longshot Predictions for BCS National Championship by Josh Nagel - 08/19/2008 There will be some considerable betting support for the favorites to win the Bowl Championship Series this year. Given the wealth of talent boasted by top-ranked Georgia, USC and Florida, this is understandable. Read more about Longshot BCS Predictions. NFL Player Salaries for 2008 by Nicholas Tolomeo - 08/18/2008 Having a legitimate salary cap in the NFL makes competency, not money, the most important asset a GM can have.
