A tightly contested Group A will know it’s two advancing team after this one, as Mexico and Uruguay clash for first place in Rustenburg at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on June 22 at 10 a.m. EST.

The South Americans earned draw in their opener against France, then in their following match put host South Africa to the sword, thanks to Diego Forlan’s brace.

Uruguay now has top spot in Group A firmly in their sights and if a similar performance is on tap from their 3-0 impressive result over Honduras, you can book them as the winners of this foursome.

Mexico was very impressive against the dismal French in their victory on June 17. Now they and Uruguay square off although both are all but into the elimination stage. The difference is that Mexico needs a win because Uruguay has a one-goal edge in goal differential, which is the first tiebreak that would come into play if both finished the group stage with equal points.

South Africa and France, too, can still find a way into the group, mathematically, however their goal difference is no good and thus an unrealistic result either way is something that would need to happen.

The best two players from Group A will be on the field in Uruguay’s Diego Forlan and Mexico’s Giovanni Dos Santos. Forlan has been a stoic leader for his side and his play has been just as stellar. Santos, who’s pace and playmaking abilities makes him one of the world’s brightest young talents, might have to shoulder more of the load with his youthful partner Carlos Vela quite possibly out after leaving the France match with an apparent hamstring injury.

You’d have a difficult time picking out which result (Uruguay’s 3-0 win vs. Mexico’s 2-0) was the best to date. No matter, as this match-up will see both teams on the pitch with their play to dictate Group A’s winner.

But, again, both of these teams will advance with a ‘draw’ so they have very little motivation to actually play a spirited game. As noted, Mexico has some incentive to try to win the group. But in all, these teams can rest players and stay healthy while conspiring for a draw and blocking France or South Africa out of the next round.

In this case you can’t ask for anything much better than that. It should be an absolutely wonderful match, and may the best winner avoid Argentina!

Mexico vs. Uruguay World Cup Odds:
Bodog currently has Mexico listed as the price of +250. They list Uruguay at +275 and the ‘Draw’ is currently available at -110.

Sports Interaction has Mexico at +240 and Uruguay at +280. The ‘Draw’ here is posted at -125 for obvious reasons.

Mexico vs. Uruguay Picks and Predictions:
Mexico wins if: they continue to let their pace shine. Their youthful exuberance has shined in the team’s first two games with the likes of Dos Santos, Vela and Hernandez all coming to the forefront and allowing others to get involved because of the trio’s speed. Uruguay will be ready to defend it, so does Mexico have a secondary weapon?

Uruguay wins if: Diego Forlan continues his world-class brilliance and continues to prove he is one of the most in-form players not only in the tournament but the whole world. He needs more help from fellow striker Luis Suarez and the midfield, but so far so good. More of the same will see them through as Group A’s winner.
