Bookmaker's Corner: Betting on Dancing With the Stars Odds
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 4/13/2010
Dancing with the Stars, a betting phenomenon? Not quite, but it’s getting closer.
While it’s true that we post reality TV odds at Bodog in part for fun and also to gain a mention or two from the all-powerful entertainment and celebrity media, you might be surprised to learn that we’re booking more and more betting action on our Dancing with the Stars props and odds than ever before.
No, not all sports fans, our meat and potatoes, are fans of reality TV. In fact, many sports fans actively despise reality TV. But at least Dancing with the Stars features some of sports’ biggest stars and personalities. That’s something, isn’t it?
If I had to guess, I’d say that’s the biggest reason why betting on Dancing with the Stars has become so popular at Bodog – it’s not sports, but it triggers thoughts of sports. That, or betting on Dancing with the Stars is the only way watching the show with one’s wife or girlfriend even approaches feasible. Kidding! (Sort of.)
Here’s another theory: Maybe dancing sports stars are just a smart bet. High-profile athletes like Emmitt Smith and Apolo Ohno have not only competed in past Dancing with the Stars competitions, they’ve gone out and won them.
It should come as no surprise then that Evan Lysacek (3/2), Erin Andrews (9/1) and Chad Ochocinco (10/1) have received the lion’s share of the betting action for the 10th season of the show. All three have a relation to sports, even if the first one’s a figure skater and the second one’s even more of a princess. Once again, I’m only kidding. (Sort of.)
Bodog’s odds to win Dancing with the Stars, Season 10
Aiden Turner 25/1
Chad Ochocinco 10/1
Erin Andrews 9/1
Evan Lysacek 3/2
Jake Pavelka 20/1
Kate Gosselin 50/1
Niecy Nash 50/1
Nicole Scherzinger 1/1
Pamela Anderson 20/1
As you can see, the current favorite to win Season 10 of Dancing with the Stars is Nicole Scherzinger, the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls. Scherzinger is partnered with Derek Hough, who won the seventh season partnered with Brooke Burke.
In researching this article, I was amused to read that Scherzinger, whose boyfriend is racecar driver Lewis Hamilton, has been forced to deny rumors of an affair with Hough. This got me thinking, perhaps we should start posting odds on how many of the competitors will be forced to deny that they’re having affairs with their partners. Whatever the total we come up with, I’d probably take the ‘over’.
I will be posting weekly articles including betting previews, matchups and the inside scoop from a bookmakers point of view right here at Doc's Sports.
