Kick Off Football Season with NFL Betting Props
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 9/2/2010
With a week to go before the NFL regular season kicks off, we’ve posted a whole laundry list of props for our players to bet on at Bodog. The sheer number of possible wagers makes it impossible to recount completely here, but I thought I’d share a few of the more popular props with you.
Obviously Brett Favre is a particularly trendy topic at the moment and has been since, well, forever. We’ve set the ole gunslinger’s total passing yards for the 2010 season at 3,850 yards, which is significantly less than the 4,202 yards he threw for in 2009. It might surprise you to learn, however, that most of the action has been on the under. In fact, you’ll have to risk $125 to win $100 if you want to bet that option. I guess most of our players have significant doubts that Favre can keep doing what he’s doing at his age. One serious injury to the old guy, after all, and it’d be pretty tough to match his numbers from 2009.
Speaking of Favre’s durability, which everyone, even his detractors, has to admit is one of the most impressive things about the guy, we’ve got a prop asking whether or not he’ll start all 16 games of the regular season. Currently, “Yes” is at +120 and “No” at -150, which seems to back up the belief by many of our bettors that his numbers will be down in 2010. That said, let’s not forget that Favre has started an NFL record 285 consecutive regular-season games, 309 if you count the playoffs. Doubt his ability to stay healthy and/or play through pain at your own peril.
Of course, Favre isn’t the only talented quarterback in the league. In fact, there are so many prolific passers in the game today that we decided to create a prop asking how many of them would throw for 4,000 or more yards this season. We set the over/under at 6.5, which might seem conservative considering 10 quarterbacks turned the trick in 2009. But let’s not forget that Ben Roethlisberger (suspended) was one of them and Kurt Warner (retired) was another. For the record, only six quarterbacks threw for 4,000 yards in 2008, and go all the way back to 2005 and the number was a mere two.
By the way, we asked the same question about the number of 1,000-yard rushers, setting the over/under at 15.5 after a 2009 season when 15 turned the trick.
Ditto for 1,000-yard receivers. Over/under: 20.5. Last year: 23.
Props are becoming a bigger and bigger part of sports betting, so I hope everyone enjoys the ones we’ve put together for the 2010 NFL season.
