NFL Week 10 Betting Recap at Bodog
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 11/18/2010
It's amazing how quickly perceptions can change in the NFL. Before the season started, we probably wouldn't have predicted that three of our most heavily bet-on teams in Bodog's Online Sportsbook for one week would be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs. But that's exactly what happened in Week 10.
We'll start with the Bucs, who paid off big time for our players when they hammered the Carolina Panthers, 31-16, to cover the 7 points they were giving up. The win moved Tampa Bay to an impressive 6-3 record, and even though the Bucs haven't played the toughest schedule - in fact it's been downright easy - they're winning the games that they're supposed to win. This week's match-up with the 49ers (-3) is another winnable one, although the 49ers might be on to something with quarterback Troy Smith.
The 49ers, speak of the devils, beat the St. Louis Rams last week but failed to cover the 6-point spread, winning by a slim 23-20 margin. Again, this was a good result for our bettors, who obviously saw some value in a 4-4 team (now 4-5) that was being given two field goals against a 2-6 side (now 3-6). St. Louis hosts Atlanta (-3) this week at the Edward Jones Dome, where they've already beaten Washington, Seattle and San Diego. We'll see if bettors will have the courage to play a home dog against a Falcons side that sits 7-2 and just knocked off Baltimore, one of the best teams in the AFC.
Finally, we come to the Kansas City Chiefs, who commanded almost 70 percent of the betting action as 1-point favorites on Sunday in Denver. This time it didn't turn out so well for our players, who had to sit and watch the Broncos jump out to a 35-0 lead and go on to win 49-29. For the Chiefs (5-4), it was their second straight loss, and perhaps now the luster has worn off for the early-season darlings. Kansas City (-8) hosts Arizona on Sunday, and that's a pretty big spread. Even against the Cardinals.
Now, I have to mention the Jacksonville-Houston game, and not just because of the 50-yard, last-play-of-the game touchdown that ended it when Texans cornerback Glover Quin batted David Garrard's Hail Mary into the hands of Jags receiver Mike Thomas. But also because Jacksonville's 31-24 miracle win was absolutely huge for the book. Believe it or not, almost 80 percent of the action was on Houston (+1), so you can imagine we were pretty happy when Garrard's prayer was answered.
