NFL Week 7 Betting Props at Bodog
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 10/23/2010
The Dallas Cowboys didn’t think it would go this way. Not with the Super Bowl being played in their gaudy new stadium in February and plenty of experts picking them to participate in it. No, this wasn’t the plan whatsoever.
Heading into Week 7 of the NFL season the Cowboys own a 1-4 record and time is running out for a turnaround, if it hasn’t already. This, of course, has led to speculation that coach Wade Phillips will be fired if things don’t get better soon. And with that in mind, a special NFL prop at Bodog’s online sportsbook: If the Cowboys lose to the Giants on Monday, will Phillips be fired before next week’s game against the Jaguars? The “Yes” option pays +500 if you think it’s likely.
Dallas owner Jerry Jones, for his part, has given Phillips a vote of confidence. Well, sort of. When asked if he would consider making a coaching change, Jones told ESPN, “I would never consider doing that during the season.”
For the record, Jones has never fired a coach mid-season. And with labor trouble looming ahead for the league, bringing in a new coach doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for the Cowboys, especially if their hopes of making the playoffs are extinguished this week. (And I think we can all agree that the Cowboys are D-U-N done if they lose to the Giants.)
In one of the more ironic parts of the Cowboys’ debacle of a season, the team has had a problem with excessive celebrating, taking penalties in consecutive games. So, will it happen again in Week 7? The “Yes” option is at +400, “No” at -600.
So far almost all the action has been on the latter, which is not surprising considering Phillips was forced to address the issue with the media this week. "We're going by the college rule [from now on]," Phillips told reporters. "That's it. Our celebration needs to be after the game, winning the game."
Moving on past the Cowboys, the big news in the NFL this week has been helmet-to-helmet hits. Week 6 was a bad one for the NFL’s image and the league has promised to crack down on illegal hits.
The NFL handed down three fines on Tuesday: Steelers LB James Harrison got dinged for $75,000, Brandon Meriweather of the Patriots for $50,000, and Atlanta’s Dunta Robinson for $50,000.
So, how many players will be fined for helmet-to-helmet hits in Week 7? We’ve set the total at 1, with early action fairly balanced on the over and under.
The players will obviously be mindful of the crackdown, but don’t expect the league to give any benefits of the doubt if there’s a debatable hit. Not this week.
