Canadian Open Odds and Golf Betting Predictions
by Frank Doyle of Sports Interaction - 7/19/2011
The Canadian Open makes one of its rare appearances west of the Rockies this weekend when it returns to the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver, BC. It’s six years since the Open was in BC and the Shaughnessy course presents a challenge to all but the most skilled golfers.
Built in 1960 where the Fraser River flows into the Straight of Georgia, the Shaughnessy course is a wooded parkland course in the classic style. The fairways are long and narrow, and surrounded by rough that is much less forgiving than the famously understated first cuts of that famous course in Augusta, GA.
But the Canadian Open has got a field to match the difficultly of the venue – Luke Donald, the World’s No 1, leads the betting as the ante-post favorite, and he’s followed closely by US Masters’ Champion Charl Schwartzel, World No 8 Hunter Mahan and the young man who came so close to a memorable first win at Royal St George’s last weekend, Rickie Fowler. Lucas Glover, winner of the US Open in 2009 is also here, filling out what is a very talented assembly of golfers indeed.
It’s 25/1 the field after Mahan and there could be value there in a year where so many winners have been big prices. Indeed, bettors could do worse than put their money on Mahan – he has seven top ten finishes for the year and has made fifteen of eighteen cuts this year – Mr Consistent.
Brandt Snedeker is value at 30/1. His world ranking is in the thirties, which may be more a reflection of how the world rankings work than Snedeker himself. Snedeker came home early from the British Open but there are few better for stringing birdies together when he’s in form.
Finally, the 2008 Champion Chez Reavie is exceptional value as a longshot prospect at 100/1. He’s accurate off the tee, he makes his greens in regulation and he has good finishes at the John Deere Classic at the Viking Classic in recent weeks. Reavie a real each-way contender.
