The New Jersey Devils finally have new ownership — it was just announced that the ownership group of the Philadelphia 76ers has taken them over. Hopefully that provides some stability after a couple of years of financial despair. The Devils are at 40/1 to win the Stanley Cup at Bovada, so the financial stability isn’t yet expected to reach the ice. That number could go up slightly, so check below for the most recent number. The team has had an up-and-down offseason. They had free agent success in signing Ryane Clowe and Michael Ryder, and taking a reasonable gamble on Jaromir Jagr for a year. They also were smart enough not to pay David Clarkson market value, and instead they let the Maple Leafs grossly overpay for him. They looked towards the future and grabbed Cory Schneider from Vancouver as the eventual replacement of Martin Brodeur. That’s all positive, but it is offset somewhat by the surprise decision of Ilya Kovalchuk to retire from the NHL so he could return to Russia. That combined with the loss of Zach Parise last year and the imminent retirement of Martin Brodeur is a lot for this team to overcome.
