Alan Matthews Writer Bio and Archives

Share |

Alan Matthews is a University of Miami graduate and former small-college basketball player before moving on to the "U". He was a sports journalist, covering most major professional team beats at one point or another, at a several newspapers throughout the Northeast for nearly 20 years. Alan has been a full-time freelance writer for the past five-plus years. His favorite sporting memory -- participatory version -- is playing in pickup games against several ex-NBA players at an adult fantasy camp and fairly holding his own. From a fan perspective, the top memory was attending Super Bowl XX when the Super Bowl Shuffle Chicago Bears of the Punky QB, Sweetness and the Fridge took New Orleans by storm and still had enough in the tank to pummel the New England Patriots for what remains the franchise's only Super Bowl title.

Free Super Bowl Pick: Expert Predictions for Patriots vs. Seahawks
by Alan Matthews - 1/29/2015

Green Bay Packers fans might argue, but I think Super Bowl XLIX got it right in that the NFL's best two teams are playing on Sunday at University of Phoenix Stadium. It's our second straight chalk Super Bowl with AFC top-seeded New England facing NFC No. 1 Seattle. Since 1990, this is the fifth time in which both No. 1 seeds in the respective conferences reached the Super Bowl. It's the first time it has happened in back-to-back years. The NFC has won each of the four previous times there has been a matchup of No. 1 seeds.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Friday, January 30 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 1/29/2015

I have the NBA League Pass, and I'll watch just about any game that's televised. However, a game arrives on Friday night that I'm not sure I would even bother with if it was the only game of the night -- that's not to say it can't be good betting value, however. That would be Minnesota at Philadelphia, teams that have a combined record of 17-74. Believe it or not, this could be important down the line in terms of which team gets the most ping-pong balls in the 2015 draft lottery in May. Here's a look at that matchup and the rest on Friday night.

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Opening Lines Thursday
by Alan Matthews - 1/28/2015

Connecticut coach Kevin Ollie was the toast of college basketball last season in leading the No. 7 seed Huskies to the National Championship the year after UConn wasn't even eligible for the Big Dance due to academic issues. Well, the bloom might be off the rose for Ollie, who was rumored for some NBA jobs, if his team doesn't start winning regularly because Connecticut is on the outside looking in for the field of 68 right now. It is a +10000 long shot to repeat at Sportsbook.ag. Here's a look at big game for the Huskies on Thursday and two other interesting matchups.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Thursday, January 29 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 1/28/2015

It's the usual TNT doubleheader on Thursday night, but they look to be two mismatches on paper when Denver visits Memphis and the Chicago is at the L.A. Lakers. If you are big on the NBA All-Star Game, make sure to watch the pre-game show that starts on TNT at 7 p.m. ET. That's when the All-Star reserves will be announced. There are some interesting decisions to be made for sure, perhaps none more than Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant. He has missed more than half the season. So will Western Conference coach Steve Kerr take him? I say yes. Here's a look at every game on Thursday's schedule.

PGA Tour Picks: Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 1/28/2015

I figured 2014 was a fluke! I came close a handful of times to picking a tournament winner last but wasn't able to do so until my final prediction of the year in late November, and that was on the European Tour. Only three events have been played in the New Year and already, to quote White Sox announcer "Hawk" Harrelson: "You can put it on the board! YES!"

2015 Super Bowl Cross-Sports Props Expert Picks vs. NBA
by Alan Matthews - 1/27/2015

On Monday this week in my NHL Week Ahead story, I looked at some hockey cross-sport props with Super Bowl XLIX. I love these things so I will continue today with NBA options against the Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl from both Bovada and Sportsbook.ag. I really wish these sites did more of these for big events. All options are pick'em and -115 unless noted.

Charlotte Bobcats point guard Kemba Walker

NBA Odds and Predictions: Wednesday, January 28 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 1/27/2015

Charlotte's playoff chances took a hit when star point guard Kemba Walker announced on Monday that he was going to have left knee surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus. Walker is averaging 18.8 points and 5.2 assists in 35.6 minutes per game, leading the team in those categories. The Hornets are hoping he misses only six weeks and thus could return late in the regular season. The team is looking at trade options, with reports saying the Hornets are targeting someone like the Kings' Ramon Sessions or Miami's Norris Cole.

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Opening Lines Wednesday
by Alan Matthews - 1/27/2015

Nothing gets an opposing fan base riled up quite like a visit from hated Duke, so it should be a zoo at Notre Dame's Purcell Pavilion on Wednesday night in a Top-10 ACC showdown. The Irish have been very successful at home against Top-10 teams under Coach Mike Brey. Duke is the +800 second-favorite at Sportsbook.ag to win the national title while Notre Dame is way down at +7500. Here's a look at that matchup and two other games that caught my eye Wednesday.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Tuesday, January 27 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 1/26/2015

Certainly a game I have been looking forward to for weeks arrives on Tuesday night in what I still think has a good shot of being an NBA Finals preview as the Bulls visit the Warriors for the only time this season. Golden State has looked like the West's best all season, while Chicago has been up-and-down since the calendar flipped to 2015. A Bulls-Warriors NBA Finals is priced at +1000 on Sportsbook.ag. Here's a look at every game on Tuesday's schedule.

Treveon Graham VCU Rams Basketball

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Opening Lines Tuesday
by Alan Matthews - 1/26/2015

Will we have a mid-major program reach the Final Four this season? Certainly the top candidate is No. 3 Gonzaga, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Coach Shaka Smart's VCU Rams reach the national semifinals for the second time this decade. Smart hasn't gotten past the second round since VCU lost to Butler in the 2011 Final Four. VCU is a +10000 long shot at Sportsbook.ag to win the national title. Here's a look at the Rams' game on Tuesday and two others that caught my eye.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 1/26/2015

The NHL drops the puck on its second half on Tuesday, but there's plenty of time to look forward to the rest of the season. This week we get the rare chance to look at some Bovada NHL player props as a cross-sport wager with Super Bowl XLIX. Let's take a look -- obviously these are only valid if said hockey players are healthy enough to play Sunday.

Tyus Jones Duke Blue Devils Basketball

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Opening Lines Sunday
by Alan Matthews - 1/24/2015

Sunday could be a historic day in college basketball as Duke's Mike Krzyzewski can become the first Division I college basketball coach ever to win 1,000 games, which is just unfathomable. Fittingly, Duke will play for No. 1,000 at Madison Square Garden, the same arena that Coach K broke Bob Knight's record for career victories in November 2011. Knight is Coach K's mentor as Krzyzewski spent the 1974-75 season on Knight's staff at Indiana before being hired as the head coach at the U.S. Military Academy, Krzyzewski's alma mater, for the next season.

2015 Super Bowl Props Picks with Betting Odds
by Alan Matthews - 1/23/2015

Unless you were a Seattle Seahawks fan, I'm presuming you probably didn't even know who linebacker Malcolm Smith was entering Super Bowl XLVIII last year at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Perhaps some 49ers fans knew him as the guy who corralled the interception -- off a Richard Sherman tip -- of a Colin Kaepernick pass in the end zone to clinch last season's NFC Championship Game against San Francisco.

Portland Trail Blazers power forward LaMarcus Aldridge

NBA Odds and Predictions: Saturday, January 24 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 1/23/2015

Terrible news for the Portland Trail Blazers in that All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge will miss 6-8 weeks with a ligament tear in his left thumb. I suppose on the bright side it means he should be back for the final month of the regular season, but in the incredibly deep West you want home-court advantage in the playoffs as long as possible. The Blazers are currently tied for second in the West, but I think this injury will send them outside the Top 4 by the time all is said and done.

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Opening Lines Saturday
by Alan Matthews - 1/23/2015

Three ranked teams in action on this list -- well technically four -- with potentially challenging road matchups on Saturday. And the good thing about basketball compared to football? We don't have to hear anything about whether the balls were inflated enough, although I can almost guarantee you the announcers will bring it up from a basketball perspective in every single telecast. Please let this story die! Here's a look at three intriguing matchups on the schedule.

Super Bowl Coin Toss

Betting on the Super Bowl Coin Toss
by Alan Matthews - 1/22/2015

It's that time of year again for perhaps my least favorite story of football season and one I struggle to flush out with new information each year, but the Super Bowl Coin Toss story is always a popular read because so many people like to bet on that prop for the big game. I honestly never have, but I get that you want to get some betting momentum going and start your bankroll off right on Super Sunday.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Friday, January 23 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 1/22/2015

The Atlanta Hawks can set a franchise record with their 15th straight victory Friday night in a terrific matchup against a Thunder team starting to play to pre-injury expectations but also off a draining victory. The Hawks are only the third Eastern Conference team in the last 30 seasons to have won 28 games during a 30-game stretch in a season. The previous two -- the 2012-13 Heat and 1995-96 Bulls -- won the NBA title. Here's a look at that matchup, which sadly isn't on national TV, and every game on Friday.

PGA Tour Picks: Humana Challenge Odds and Betting Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 1/21/2015

The PGA Tour said goodbye to Hawaii for the rest of the year with last week's Sony Open, and American Jimmy Walker won the event for the second year in a row -- just six days after blowing a likely win at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions on Maui with a late final-round collapse and finishing second.

NCAA Basketball Betting 3-Point Play: Three Interesting Opening Lines Thursday
by Alan Matthews - 1/21/2015

Three potential Final Four teams are in action on Thursday night, and it wouldn't shock me if two of them, Arizona and Gonzaga, lost to quality conference opponents. Meanwhile, second-ranked Virginia should remain unbeaten against arguably the worst team in the ACC. The Cavaliers are +900 at Sportsbook.ag to win the national title, with Arizona at +1200 and Gonzaga at +1400. Here's a look at each matchup, and it's an underdog Thursday.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Thursday, January 22 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 1/21/2015

Could the Chicago Bulls actually fire Tom Thibodeau? Seems hard to believe as Thibs is widely considering one of the NBA's top coaches and perhaps its best from a defensive perspective. But with the Bulls in a major funk and lacking any intensity, there's talk that Thibodeau finally may have lost the locker room -- he pushes his players harder than any other NBA guy in terms of practices and minutes played.
