Alan Matthews Writer Bio and Archives

Share |

Alan Matthews is a University of Miami graduate and former small-college basketball player before moving on to the "U". He was a sports journalist, covering most major professional team beats at one point or another, at a several newspapers throughout the Northeast for nearly 20 years. Alan has been a full-time freelance writer for the past five-plus years. His favorite sporting memory -- participatory version -- is playing in pickup games against several ex-NBA players at an adult fantasy camp and fairly holding his own. From a fan perspective, the top memory was attending Super Bowl XX when the Super Bowl Shuffle Chicago Bears of the Punky QB, Sweetness and the Fridge took New Orleans by storm and still had enough in the tank to pummel the New England Patriots for what remains the franchise's only Super Bowl title.

PGA Tour Picks: Zurich Classic of New Orleans Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 4/23/2014

Well, I was right and wrong last week. Right in that a guy who doesn't bomb it of the tee would win the RBC Heritage on Hilton Head Island because that was usually the case. Wrong in that I believed Matt Kuchar, Mr. Consistent, would struggle a bit in the wake of a Masters hangover.

The three series on Thursday night are the first in these NBA playoffs to be played on the lower seed's home court. and each has to be feeling satisfied after splitting against the series favorites in the first two games in their gym. Here's a look at each matchup.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Thursday April 24, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 4/23/2014

It's largely a getaway day Thursday in the majors, so there are six matinees for baseball bettors to enjoy on the schedule. Bovada will offer live betting on three games overall: Cardinals at Mets, Yankees at Red Sox and Phillies at Dodgers. Here is a look at five interesting matchups on Thursday.

NBA Odds: Wednesday, April 23, 2014 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 4/22/2014

Is Wednesday night the first time in these playoffs that the home team wins every game? It hasn't happened yet entering Tuesday's action, but I believe it will on Wednesday. Here's a look at each postseason game on the schedule.

by Alan Matthews - 4/22/2014

Have you noticed how little attention that Albert Pujols has gotten as he closes in on 500 career home runs? It doesn't seem like such a magical number these days after all the PED use led to inflated totals. Might Pujols join the club Wednesday? Here's a look at five interesting games on the schedule.

NBA Odds: Tuesday, April 22, 2014 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 4/21/2014

It's probably fair to call Tuesday's three Game 2s in the NBA playoffs all must wins for the home teams because each of them was upset in Game 1. And Game 1 winners take best-of-7 playoffs series more than 75 percent of the time as it is. Here's a look at each game on the schedule.

Think it's possible we can make it through a full slate of games Saturday without hearing any more about Yasiel Puig and his trek from Cuba? Or with a weather-related delays or postponements? Both would be nice. Here is a look at five interesting games on the schedule.

NBA Odds: Saturday, April 19, 2014 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 4/17/2014

Why does it feel like this is a season where neither top seed reaches the NBA Finals? As it happens, a Pacers-Spurs Finals -- which would be a ratings disaster -- is only a 13/2 favorite at Bovada. Heat-Spurs is 3/1 and Heat-Thunder 4/1. Yet Miami also looks as vulnerable as it has in the LeBron James Era. Here is a look at Saturday's opening NBA playoff games.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Friday April 18, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 4/17/2014

Perhaps no good pitcher in baseball gets less run support than the Cubs' Jeff Samardzija, who probably won't be a Cub for too much longer. Things don't look promising for Samardzija in Friday's home start against Cincinnati considering the Cubs just suffered the rare ignominy of being shutout in both games of a doubleheader Wednesday. Here's a look at Friday's Reds-Cubs matchup and four other intriguing games.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Thursday April 17, 2014 Opening Line Report

It has been a terrible past three seasons for Houston Astros fans, but things will get better if their farm system is any indication. And one of the jewels of that system now is likely in the majors for good in George Springer. Here is a look Thursday's Royals-Astros matchup and four other interesting games.

NFL Futures: Pre-Schedule & Draft Super Bowl Odds Update
by Alan Matthews - 4/16/2014

We are about to enter probably the three most exciting weeks of the NFL offseason: the release of the schedule and the draft, so it's a good time to take an updated look at some 2014 NFL futures odds as they could change a bit after those two events (certainly win totals can be affected).

PGA Tour Picks: RBC Heritage Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 4/16/2014

Ratings were down for the 2014 Masters and so was the overall interest at the sportsbooks. Whereas the Masters usually takes by far the most action of any golf tournament in a given year, I could see whichever major Tiger Woods returns for first this year passing it up. That's how much Tiger drives the needle.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Wednesday, April 16, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 4/15/2014

Afternoon baseball fans -- or those of us who work from home and hate not having sports on during the day -- can rejoice Wednesday as there are a handful of matinee games with a few teams on getaway days. Here's a look at five interesting matchups from the schedule.

NBA Odds: Wednesday, April 16, 2014 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 4/15/2014

It seems just yesterday that the 2013-14 NBA season tipped off with Chicago visiting Miami on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Derrick Rose's long-awaited (and short-lived) return from injury. Now the regular season comes to a close Wednesday with every team in action but not much drama remaining. The playoffs should be another story. Here's a look at all of Wednesday's action (as expected many TBAs because of the possibility of so many players being held out).

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Tuesday, April 15, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 4/14/2014

We will call Tuesday's interleague matchup between the Cubs and Yankees the Masahiro Tanaka Bowl. They were the two most aggressive bidders for the Japanese star, with the Yankees trumping the Cubs bid by about $30 million while also including a no-trade clause, something that Cubs boss Theo Epstein doesn't believe in.

New York Knicks small forward Carmelo Anthony

NBA Odds: Tuesday, April 15, 2014 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 4/14/2014

This game frankly doesn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. New York was eliminated from the playoff chase over the weekend, and big changes will be coming to that franchise. Mike Woodson? Goner. Carmelo Anthony? Maybe gone too, at least if he cares about winning more than money.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Friday April 11, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 4/10/2014

What's unique about Friday's full schedule? It's the first day of the 2014 season where there are no matinees when there has been a full slate. In my opinion there should be at least one matinee every day so MLB could have the spotlight to itself for those who work odd hours and want to watch live sports at a pub or something during the day, but what do I know? Here's a look at five interesting matchups to kickoff the weekend.

NBA Odds: Friday, April 11, 2014 Opening Line Report and Handicapping

Pacers at Heat on Friday will probably be for the top seed in the Eastern Conference, so might we actually see all the regulars play in a late-season game? It hasn't been happening much around the league. Here's a look at every game on Friday's schedule, with Pacers-Heat and Warriors-Lakers on national TV (NBATV).

2014 Masters Picks with Betting Odds and Expert Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 4/9/2014

I'm going to quickly recap last week's picks at the Shell Houston Open instead of a more in-depth look back as usual because there are so many Masters props that I could write at least five stories alone on the season's first major championship that begins Thursday at historic Augusta National.
