Alan Matthews Writer Bio and Archives

Share |

Alan Matthews is a University of Miami graduate and former small-college basketball player before moving on to the "U". He was a sports journalist, covering most major professional team beats at one point or another, at a several newspapers throughout the Northeast for nearly 20 years. Alan has been a full-time freelance writer for the past five-plus years. His favorite sporting memory -- participatory version -- is playing in pickup games against several ex-NBA players at an adult fantasy camp and fairly holding his own. From a fan perspective, the top memory was attending Super Bowl XX when the Super Bowl Shuffle Chicago Bears of the Punky QB, Sweetness and the Fridge took New Orleans by storm and still had enough in the tank to pummel the New England Patriots for what remains the franchise's only Super Bowl title.

by Alan Matthews - 11/25/2014

Do I think it's fair that Detroit and Dallas get to host the Thanksgiving Day games every year? I don't, but you can see why they don't want to relinquish the tradition. Part of what makes Dallas America's Team is because the Cowboys were guaranteed national coverage on this holiday every season. You would have to pry hosting the Thanksgiving game out of owner Jerry Jones' cold, dead hands. The guy is nothing if not a marketing genius.

NFL Football Predictions: Week 13 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/25/2014

You want NFL parity? I'll give you NFL parity. Entering Week 13 there are 16 teams with at least seven wins, the most ever through 11 games. All four AFC North teams sit on seven wins, and it's the first division in league history to have every team at least three games over .500 at any point in a season. To me this NFL season has been like the NCAA version in that there are probably 10-12 teams good enough to win it all with no clear-cut favorite.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Wednesday, November 26 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/25/2014

I believe that the NBA schedule is dark on just two days during the regular season outside of the All-Star Break. Those days would be Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. So with no games on Thursday it's an expected very heavy schedule Wednesday night with all but four teams in action. For your live betting pleasure at WagerWeb, Knicks-Mavericks (ESPN) and Grizzlies-Lakers (NBA TV) are on national television. Here's a look at every game.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Tuesday, November 25 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/24/2014

Part of me wants to simply exclude Chicago Bulls games in these stories going forward. I must admit I'm a bit of Bulls fan, but I certainly don't let that affect my picks. Frankly, I'm getting tired of the daily Derrick Rose Injury Watch. The guy is just never going to be the MVP-caliber player he was because he's brittle. It's a shame, but it is what it is. The Rose Watch is on again Tuesday night as Chicago has a tough second of a back-to-back in Denver. Here's a look at all five games on Tuesday's schedule. Three games opened at TBA because of injury questions.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 14 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/24/2014

Rocked on my Week 13 picks in this space, getting Maryland over Michigan, Boston College covering (and nearly upsetting) Florida State, Louisville going into fading Notre Dame and beating the Irish, and Iowa covering at home (and nearly winning) vs. Wisconsin. The only miss was Duke against North Carolina as the Blue Devils imploded and cost themselves a return trip to the ACC Championship Game.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 11/24/2014

Penguins star Sidney Crosby is probably your Hart Trophy favorite with 26 points entering the week, but my pick back in October, Dallas' Tyler Seguin, is right there. He also has 26 points but leads the NHL in goals with 15, one ahead of preseason favorite Steven Stamkos of Tampa Bay. Seguin probably won 't get the Hart consideration he deserves because the Stars have been a big disappointment with just 20 points. Those are the third-fewest in the Western Conference.

Monday Night Football Predictions: Baltimore Ravens at New Orleans Saints Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/21/2014

OK, let's talk about my favorite two divisions in the NFL this season, the Ravens' AFC North and Saints' NFC South. I say favorite because all four teams in each could still win the division. Yes, even the 2-8 Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't dead in the South.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Saturday, November 22 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/21/2014

One of the NBA's most-heated rivalries, fueled in large part by Dallas owner Mark Cuban, is Mavericks-Rockets. They meet for the first time this season on Saturday night in the marquee matchup on the schedule. Expect a rude welcome back to Houston for Mavericks swingman Chandler Parsons after he left the Rockets this past offseason when Cuban lured him with a three-year, $45 million offer as a restricted free agent. Of course, it's not Parsons' fault that the Rockets decided not to match. Here's a look at every game on the schedule

Free Expert NFL Picks: Cleveland Browns at Atlanta Falcons Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/20/2014

Here's another week where I'm previewing a game I never would have thought of back in the preseason. Shoot, even a month ago I wouldn't have guessed that Sunday's Browns-Falcons would be an intriguing matchup. This is the second of two games featuring an AFC North contender against an NFC South one. The other is Monday's Ravens-Saints matchup, and I'll get into how crazy both divisions are in that preview.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Friday, November 21 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/20/2014

The NBA isn't college football or the NFL. One win or loss does not a season make and will not change futures odds. Thus, even though Cleveland was beaten on Tuesday night at home by San Antonio in a potential NBA Finals preview, the Cavs remain +250 title favorites at Sportsbook.ag, with San Antonio still No. 2 at +400. Both sides could be caught in letdown games on Friday night. Here's a look at the full schedule.

Free Expert NFL Picks: Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/19/2014

On the surface, this Thursday's NFL Network game between the Chiefs and Raiders certainly looks like a total mismatch. After all, Kansas City has won five straight and seven of eight and is a surprise co-leader with Denver atop the AFC West, while the Raiders are the NFL's only winless team.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Thursday, November 20 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/19/2014

After getting carpal tunnel syndrome every Wednesday with always a big schedule of NBA games that I have to examine, I look forward to Thursdays because it's almost always a light schedule thanks to TNT's national TV contract with the NBA. And that's definitely the case this week with only the two TNT games on the slate. Here's an in-depth look at both. Alas, due to key injuries, both lines are not likely to be released until Thursday morning.

MLB Predictions: Who Won Big Cardinals-Braves Trade?
by Alan Matthews - 11/18/2014

Major League Baseball's Hot Stove League is really starting to heat up now. For example, the Toronto Blue Jays surprisingly signed perhaps the top position player free agent, former Pirates catcher Russell Martin, on Monday. That came out of nowhere as it was widely presumed that Martin was going to sign with the Chicago Cubs, who have been taking a huge amount of futures action at Bovada since hiring Joe Maddon. Martin would have shortened those World Series odds even more.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Wednesday, November 19 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/18/2014

One of those games NBA fans and bettors circled back when the 2014-15 regular-season schedule was released arrives on Wednesday night from Cleveland as the NBA champion Spurs face off against LeBron James. Again. Of course, the Spurs and James' Heat played in the past two NBA Finals. San Antonio's demolition of Miami this past summer essentially was the impetus for James deciding to leave South Florida for Cleveland. You know he wants this win badly. Here's a look at every game on the schedule.

NFL Football Predictions: Week 12 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/18/2014

There's always one week that that simply defies explanation in the NFL. I believe we just had our 2014 version with some of Week 11's surprising results. The big shocker was the Denver Broncos losing 22-7 at St. Louis. OK, the Rams had beaten Seattle and San Francisco, but holding Peyton Manning and Co. to seven points?? Manning's streak of 15 straight games with at least two touchdown passes ended. The Broncos had been the lone NFL team to go unbeaten on the road against teams with losing records since 2012, going 9-0.

European Tour Picks: DP World Tour Championship Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 11/18/2014

The final PGA Tour official event of 2014 wrapped up on Sunday, and I'm a bit angry that Charley Hoffman won the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico because I've picked him twice over the past 15 months or so to win an event and he didn't.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Tuesday, November 18 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/17/2014

You've got marquee teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder in action on Tuesday night. However, those are marquee teams in name only this season -- well, the Thunder still might be worth something once healthy. Thus, the best matchup on the four-game schedule is New Orleans at Sacramento. It's also the only nationally-televised game, on NBA TV, and WagerWeb will offer live betting. Here's a look at each matchup.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 13 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 11/17/2014

So what's the fallout from Week 12 of the college football season? We certainly can waive goodbye to the College Football Playoff hopes of Auburn, which now can't return to the SEC Championship Game, and Arizona State. Georgia clobbered the Tigers 34-7 despite losing star running back Todd Gurley, the former Heisman leader, to a season-ending ACL tear.

Monday Night Football Picks: Pittsburgh Steelers at Tennessee Titans Odds
by Alan Matthews - 11/14/2014

How much fun is the AFC North? Entering Week 11, every team in the North had a winning record. It's the first division in which every team is at least two games above .500 at any point in a season since the 1935 NFL Western Division. That stat totally shocks me.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Saturday, November 15 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 11/14/2014

Dear Chicago Bulls fans: Get used to daily Derrick Rose injury reports as well as questions every game on whether he will play or not. It's now clear the 26-year-old Rose is never going to play a full 82-game season again (to be fair, LeBron James never has). The guy just can't stay healthy, and it's a shame because he looked like a potential all-time great when he was the youngest NBA MVP in history a few years ago. The Rose Watch is on again for Saturday's game. Here's a look at every matchup on the schedule that night.
