Alan Matthews Writer Bio and Archives

Share |

Alan Matthews is a University of Miami graduate and former small-college basketball player before moving on to the "U". He was a sports journalist, covering most major professional team beats at one point or another, at a several newspapers throughout the Northeast for nearly 20 years. Alan has been a full-time freelance writer for the past five-plus years. His favorite sporting memory -- participatory version -- is playing in pickup games against several ex-NBA players at an adult fantasy camp and fairly holding his own. From a fan perspective, the top memory was attending Super Bowl XX when the Super Bowl Shuffle Chicago Bears of the Punky QB, Sweetness and the Fridge took New Orleans by storm and still had enough in the tank to pummel the New England Patriots for what remains the franchise's only Super Bowl title.

NFL Football Predictions: Week 1 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 9/2/2014

Oakland Raiders at NY Jets (-5.5, 39): This has the lowest total on the board. I Can see why as we get the not-so-stellar quarterback matchup of David Carr against Geno Smith. Carr, a second-round rookie out of Fresno State, was somewhat surprisingly named the starter on Monday over Matt Schaub, who was not surprisingly pretty awful in camp and preseason games.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Wednesday September 3, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 9/2/2014

Was Monday's combined no-hitter by the Phillies the last no-no we will see this season? It was only the fourth of 2014. Don't know about you, but they don't overly excite me any longer. All four have come in the National League -- in fact, the last AL no-hitter was Aug. 15, 2012, by Seattle's Felix Hernandez. Cincinnati's Homer Bailey and San Francisco's Tim Lincecum each have two since then. Just shows how random they are.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 2 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 9/1/2014

What an interesting first week of college football. Obviously it's way too early to read too much into things, but Florida State doesn't look all that invulnerable unless Oklahoma State is way better than we think. Alabama looks somewhat overrated, while Texas A&M appears underrated.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Tuesday September 2, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 9/1/2014

I said that it was possible for either the Angels or A's to sweep their four-game series over the weekend and take total control of the AL West race. I just didn't think either team would sweep. Proves what I know. The Angels indeed did and now have a five-game lead in the division -- big enough that Sportsbook.ag has taken down AL West futures.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Saturday August 30, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/29/2014

Just a reminder to everyone that baseball's waiver trade deadline is at 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, and there could be moves that will affect pennant races. Of course, the one problem for a team who claims a player is that the other team might just say: "keep him."

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Friday August 29, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/28/2014

Can you tell me the only two current franchises to never play in the World Series? The answer is Washington and Seattle. Both could make it this year, and that Fall Classic matchup is priced at +2500 on Sportsbook.ag. What do the Nats and Mariners have in common? Terrific pitching. They open a three-game series Friday night in the Pacific Northwest in the weekend's only interleague series. Here's a look at that game and four others.

FedEx Cup Picks: Deutsche Bank Championship Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 8/28/2014

Hunter Mahan by all accounts is one of the good guys on Tour, so it was nice to see him win last week's PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoff opening Barclays event in New Jersey for his first title in his past 47 starts and 30 months or so.

North Carolina Tar Heels Odds to Win the 2015 College Football National Championship
by Alan Matthews - 8/27/2014

The University of North Carolina is obviously known as a basketball school, and that program has always overshadowed the football side. Really the only coach in the past 25 years who came close to getting football on a near-equal footing with hoops was Mack Brown, and he left for Texas in 1997 just when the Heels were starting to look like a national power.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Thursday August 28, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/27/2014

I wouldn't consider it likely, but should either Oakland or the L.A. Angels sweep this weekend's four-game series, that team would take control of the AL West and the potential top seed in the American League. Should one team get swept, it might force that panicked GM to make a trade before the waiver deadline. The Angels, for example, are looking for starting pitching in the wake of Garrett Richards' injury. Oakland is the -150 division favorite at Sportsbook.ag,

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Wednesday August 27, 2014 Opening Line Report

You really shouldn't have been backing the wretched Texas Rangers regardless, but now don't even think about it the rest of the season. Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo is being shut down for the season, and while he's been a disappointment, he's still was one of the team's best healthy players left. In addition, ace Yu Darvish also likely will be shelved.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 1 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 8/25/2014

It feels like forever ago that we saw Florida State beat Auburn in the final BCS Championship Game -- and one of certainly one of the best national title games this century. Now the BCS is dead, and we are introduced to the four-team College Football Playoff. How will it work? No one seems to know other than the 13 members who will pick the national semifinalists similar to how the NCAA Tournament field is chosen.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Tuesday August 26, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/25/2014

The Boston Red Sox clearly have given up at this point as they were just swept at home by the Seattle Mariners and have now lost eight straight games. And you know what? Management probably hopes the team continues to lose. It means a better draft pick and more slot money to sign those draft picks. Plus, if you finish with one of the 10 worst records in the league you don't have to cough up your first-round pick if you sign a top-tier free agent.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Saturday August 23, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/22/2014

I love baseball and will continue these stories through the end of the regular season, but let's not kid ourselves here: This is the last Saturday that baseball is front and center on our betting minds with college football season set to kick off. There are six matinee matchups on the MLB schedule this Saturday, so that's a good thing. There need to be more matinee games every day of the season and always at least one. Listening Rob Manfred? Here's a look at five interesting matchups.

2014 US Open Tennis Picks, Odds and Predictions for Menís and Womenís Draw
by Alan Matthews - 8/22/2014

Dedicated tennis fans tend to favor Wimbledon as the most prestigious of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments each year. I can't argue with that. However, obviously the vast majority of American tennis fans and bettors prefer the U.S. Open. Obviously, there's the simple fact it's played in the States and thus at normal times to our body/betting clocks. The Australian Open is played in the middle of the night U.S. time, while the French and Wimbledon have their finals in the morning USA time. The U.S. Open is all about prime-time TV.

Clemson quarterback Cole Stoudt

Clemson Tigers Odds to Win the 2015 College Football National Championship
by Alan Matthews - 8/21/2014

When you hear about the top coaches in college football, is Clemson's Dabo Swinney mentioned? He should be. The guy can recruit -- currently the school has the No. 2 Class of 2015 -- and all Clemson does is win under him. True, he can't beat South Carolina, but that's about it.

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Friday August 22, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/21/2014

Well, so much for my belief that the Los Angeles Angels would win not just the AL West but also the pennant. Now I see neither as happening barring an unlikely waiver trade after the major knee injury suffered by ace pitcher Garrett Richards on Wednesday night in Boston. If you haven't seen the video, well, it's not quite Paul George disturbing but close.

FedEx Cup Picks: The Barclays Odds and Betting Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 8/20/2014

I always thought Colombia's Camilo Villegas would be a pretty big star in the golf world. The former Florida Gator had personality, good looks -- he was featured in the magazine GQ in 2006 and on People's "Hottest Bachelors" list -- and a game to match. Villegas won the 2008 BMW Championship and Tour Championship (finishing second to Vijay Singh in the FedEx Cup playoffs) as well as the 2010 Honda Classic.

Braves starting pitcher Julio Teheran

Five to Follow MLB Betting: Thursday August 21, 2014 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 8/20/2014

Any day now, Cuban star Rusney Castillo is going to sign with a big-league club, and he could make an impact on the pennant races when the rosters expand in September if he goes to Detroit, San Francisco or the New York Yankees, three teams that could use outfield upgrades and are in the mix for him. Castillo can also play second or third. He isn't considered as powerful as Jose Abreu or Yoenis Cespedes but has above-average power and very good speed. He could be an interesting late-season addition. The Red Sox, Cubs and Phillies are in the mix too.

Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Kenny Hill

Texas A&M Aggies Odds to Win the 2015 College Football National Championship
by Alan Matthews - 8/19/2014

I think it's fair to say that one of the best decisions by any school in Division I football that has been made this century was Texas A&M jumping at the chance to leave the Big 12 -- and the shadow of Big Brother Texas -- for the SEC. Now it's not even close which program in the Lone Star State has more national relevance.
