Alan Matthews Writer Bio and Archives

Share |

Alan Matthews is a University of Miami graduate and former small-college basketball player before moving on to the "U". He was a sports journalist, covering most major professional team beats at one point or another, at a several newspapers throughout the Northeast for nearly 20 years. Alan has been a full-time freelance writer for the past five-plus years. His favorite sporting memory -- participatory version -- is playing in pickup games against several ex-NBA players at an adult fantasy camp and fairly holding his own. From a fan perspective, the top memory was attending Super Bowl XX when the Super Bowl Shuffle Chicago Bears of the Punky QB, Sweetness and the Fridge took New Orleans by storm and still had enough in the tank to pummel the New England Patriots for what remains the franchise's only Super Bowl title.

Free Expert NFL Picks: Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona Cardinals Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/23/2014

There are some pretty good matchups worth looking at Sunday in Week 8. Bears-Patriots looked like a marquee matchup back in the preseason, but now it's desperation time for Chicago. I pondered that one but am sure will have to look at Broncos-Patriots next week. It's federal mandate to preview a Peyton Manning-Tom Brady showdown.

MLB World Series Betting: Game 3 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 10/23/2014

Thank you, Kansas City Royals. I don't really care who wins this World Series, although like most outside of the San Francisco Bay Area I am pulling for the underdog Royals because they haven't won anything in 29 years. Before this series began, I leaned the Giants in six games, and I still feel that way. However, I am thrilled the Royals won Game 2 on Wednesday night -- this is just the second World Series where the first two games were both decided by five runs or more -- because other than K.C.'s wild-card win over Oakland, these playoffs have been rather dull.

NBA Props Odds and Picks: Scoring, Rebounds and Assists Leaders
by Alan Matthews - 10/23/2014

I don't know about you, but I am probably more excited about this NBA season since at least LeBron James' first with the Heat when he became the league's No. 1 villain. Amazing how things have changed in four years as now James is back in Cleveland and again the NBA's most popular player. You can go home again!

San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers

Free Expert NFL Picks: San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/21/2014

First place in the AFC West and an early key head-to-head tiebreaker is on the line here. The Broncos (5-1) are the only team in the AFC with just the lone loss. The Chargers (5-2) maybe got caught looking ahead a bit to this one on Sunday when they were upset at home by Kansas City. Or perhaps it's just because Andy Reid-coached teams almost never lose off a bye week. But that defeat took a small bit of luster off this one.

NFL Football Predictions: Week 8 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/21/2014

With all due respect to Peyton Manning throwing his NFL-record 509th career touchdown pass, the most interesting thing to happen in the NFL in Week 7 was the Seattle Seahawks' shocking trade of Percy Harvin to the New York Jets. Seattle gave up three draft picks, including a first-rounder, to get Harvin from the Vikings before the 2013 season even though Harvin had a well-known reputation for being a major locker-room cancer.

PGA Tour Picks: The McGladrey Classic Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/21/2014

I'll just be honest here in that I had barely heard of golfer Ben Martin -- he probably never heard of me, either -- before he was the surprise winner of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas last week. The week before, Martin had shot 78-79 at the Frys.com Open to miss the cut and finish with the second-worst score in the field. So of course he then shot a 20-under 264, highlighted by a third-round 62, for his first Tour win in career start No. 56.

MLB World Series Betting: Game 1 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 10/20/2014

Well, here we have the World Series that I correctly projected back in spring training: San Francisco Giants against Kansas City Royals. Uh, NOT! I am stunned this is the Fall Classic matchup. I didn't think San Francisco would beat Washington or St. Louis. I thought Kansas City would get stomped by the Los Angeles Angels, although beating the Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS wasn't a shocker. But you will never convince me these are the two best teams in baseball. They are just the two hottest right now.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 9 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/20/2014

How ridiculous is the SEC West? In Monday's Associated Press poll that division has four teams in the Top 5. That's just silly and a first for any conference to hold down 80 percent of the Top 5. Mississippi State, which was off last week, remains at No. 1, with Ole Miss at No. 3, Alabama jumping three spots to No. 4 and Auburn moving up a spot to No. 5. I'm not sure Notre Dame deserved to drop from No. 5 to No. 7 after that thrilling loss at Florida State on Saturday.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 10/20/2014

A couple of weeks ago in this space I wrote that Dallas forward Tyler Seguin was great value at 15/1 to win the Hart Trophy in the NHL this season. Well, I'm not quite ready to gloat about that yet, but so far so good. Seguin enters Monday tied for third in the league with eight points, and he was the NHL's first star for last week.

NBA Odds and Picks: Which Division Does Champion Come From?
by Alan Matthews - 10/18/2014

With the 2014-15 NBA season less than two weeks away -- opening night is Tuesday, Oct. 28 -- the sportsbooks are rolling out more and more season, team and individual props every day. Here I will look at which division houses the NBA champion with odds courtesy of Sportsbook.ag. I wonder why the site doesn't do this for the NFL, NHL or MLB.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

Monday Night Football Predictions: Houston Texans at Pittsburgh Steelers Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/16/2014

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a family-run organization, and the Rooneys have made the franchise one of the most stable in the NFL. For example, the Steelers have had just three head coaches since the 1970 merger: Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin. All have been successful. However, I wonder if Monday could be the beginning of the end for Tomlin should Pittsburgh lose.

Free Expert NFL Picks: Cincinnati Bengals at Indianaplois Colts Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/15/2014

Clearly the best overall matchup on Sunday in the NFL is 49ers at Broncos, a potential Super Bowl preview. In fact, that is currently priced at +1200, the second-favored exact Super matchup on Sportsbook.ag. The favorite is Seattle-Denver at +650. However, I looked at the Niners on Monday night and will examine the Broncos in the Thursday Week 8 game. Both will be previewed often because they are marquee teams.

PGA Tour Picks: Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/15/2014

OK, if this golf season is like the last one then I'm probably going to go winless again -- I am just being honest. If I'm a little ticked off it's because I do homework on these tournaments and then guys come from way out of nowhere to win.

NFL Football Predictions: Week 7 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/14/2014

Sometimes just when you think you have a handle on what's going on in the NFL, something like Week 6 happens. The Seahawks are the NFC's best team? Hardly. Maybe Dallas is. Ben Roethlisberger owns Cleveland? Maybe Brian Hoyer owns Pittsburgh. But the most crushing result from a betting perspective, at least for me, had to be the Broncos-Jets game.

Free Expert NFL Picks: New York Jets at New England Patriots Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/14/2014

After five straight blowouts on Thursday nights this season, we finally got a close game last week. Alas, the chances of another one don't look great this week when the Jets and Patriots renew their heated rivalry as New England is the biggest Week 7 favorite on the board.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 8 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/13/2014

Pretty solid Week 7 on my college football early-week picks. That Central Florida -3.5 line was one of my favorites of the year at home against BYU. The Knights saved me some embarrassment by winning by a touchdown in overtime. I think Penn State (+1) would have beaten Michigan if not for an absolutely horrible offside call after the Lions recovered a late onside kick.

MLB Playoffs Betting: Cardinals at Giants Game 3 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 10/13/2014

Thank goodness for the National League, because the American League playoffs have been rather void of drama. Oh, sure, the wild-card game was spectacular, but both ALDS ended in a sweep, and it's possible that the ALCS could end in a Royals four-game sweep as early as Tuesday if they win Game 3 at home Monday night (it it's played as rain is forecast). The NLCS between the Giants and Cardinals is guaranteed to go at least five games as it heads to California for Game 3 on Tuesday afternoon tied at 1-1.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 10/13/2014

The most impressive team of the first week of the NHL season? Probably the Minnesota Wild. The least impressive? Perhaps the Colorado Avalanche. It just so happens that those teams first two games were against one another.

Madison Bumgarner of the San Francisco Giants

MLB Playoffs Betting: Giants at Cardinals Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 10/10/2014

Is the National League Championship Series between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals a surprise? No question, but definitely not on the level or the Royals-Orioles ALCS. The Giants and Cardinals have been two of the most successful teams in baseball this decade. It's an even-numbered year, and that's when San Francisco wins World Series.

Monday Night Football Picks: San Francisco 49ers at St. Louis Rams Odds
by Alan Matthews - 10/9/2014

We all know that entering Week 6 the Thursday night games have been an abomination to watch so far. The Monday night games, outside of perhaps two (Chargers-Cardinals and Eagles-Colts) haven't been a heck of a lot better. Alas, I'm not sure that changes this week in what appears to be a mismatch between San Francisco and St. Louis.
