Alan Matthews Writer Bio and Archives

Share |

Alan Matthews is a University of Miami graduate and former small-college basketball player before moving on to the "U". He was a sports journalist, covering most major professional team beats at one point or another, at a several newspapers throughout the Northeast for nearly 20 years. Alan has been a full-time freelance writer for the past five-plus years. His favorite sporting memory -- participatory version -- is playing in pickup games against several ex-NBA players at an adult fantasy camp and fairly holding his own. From a fan perspective, the top memory was attending Super Bowl XX when the Super Bowl Shuffle Chicago Bears of the Punky QB, Sweetness and the Fridge took New Orleans by storm and still had enough in the tank to pummel the New England Patriots for what remains the franchise's only Super Bowl title.

Free Expert NFL Picks: New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/29/2014

Remember in 2010 when the Seattle Seahawks won the NFC West with a 7-9 record (won tiebreaker over Rams)? Many called that the worst division in a single season in NFL history. Umm, this year's NFC South might surpass it. I kid you not, I could see a 6-10 mark winning the south as Carolina (3-4-1) and New Orleans (3-4) battle for first in this week's Thursday night game -- only shown on the NFL Network, by the way.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Thursday, October 30 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 10/29/2014

Not sure if you heard, but LeBron James was in the news a bit this summer for his decision to shift locations. His return to Cleveland on Thursday night's first TNT doubleheader game should draw some very big ratings and betting action as the Cavs host the New York Knicks. Get used to Cleveland being on national television occasionally this season. Bovada will offer live betting on Knicks-Cavaliers as well as the second TNT game, Thunder-Clippers. Here's a look at every NBA game on the schedule. Taking a rare weekday off for Friday's action but will be back at it for Saturday's games.

PGA Tour Picks: CIMB Classic Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/29/2014

At last week's McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, Ga., Robert Streb (yep, you got me there) won his first PGA Tour event. He beat two guys I did know, Brendon de Jonge and Will MacKenzie, in a playoff. All three finished at 14-under 266 with MacKenzie falling out on the first playoff hole. Streb, who shot a final-round and career-low 63 to get into extra holes (he was five back after 54 holes), birdied the second playoff hole to eliminate de Jonge, a very good player still looking for his first win. Streb's previous best finish was a runner-up in New Orleans last season.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Wednesday, October 29 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 10/28/2014

Very interesting slew of openers on Wednesday night. I am particularly looking forward to watching the Chicago Bulls with the return of Derrick Rose. What will the Miami Heat look like without LeBron James? The Indiana Pacers without Paul George? How about the Thunder without Kevin Durant for the first six weeks at least? Could the Philadelphia 76ers be the worst team in NBA history? Here's a look at every game on the slate. Bovada will offer live betting on four: Nets-Celtics, Bulls-Knicks, Lakers-Suns and Thunder-Trail Blazers.

NFL Football Predictions: Week 9 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/28/2014

Are the Detroit Lions the luckiest team in the NFL? Do you realize that they have led for a total of 98 seconds in the past two games yet won both? The Atlanta Falcons self-destructed in Week 8 in London, blowing a 21-0 halftime lead and then having some very questionable clock management at the end that allowed Detroit to kick the game-winning field goal -- only after Matt Prater missed the first attempt. He got another with a delay of game call.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 10 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/28/2014

The new college football playoff committee's Top 25 will be released on Tuesday evening to great fanfare. Just think how angry most of the country will be if the SEC has three of the coveted Top-4 spots. It's quite possible. I think Mississippi State and Florida State are locks to be two of the Top 4 as they are the only Power 5 teams to remain unbeaten. After that your guess is as good as mine. I think it's safe to say that there will be one other SEC team at least in the Top 4, either Alabama, Auburn or Ole Miss.

NBA Odds and Predictions: Tuesday, October 28 Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews - 10/27/2014

I don't know about you, but I am downright giddy that the NBA season tips off on Tuesday night with three games, highlighted by the champion San Antonio Spurs raising a fifth championship banner to the rafters. Would have been nice to see the Cavaliers be the opponent for San Antonio, but that apparently couldn't be worked out. I will provide these opening line reports Tuesday-Saturday (most weeks), trying to get you an early betting edge and with injury updates, etc.

MLB World Series Betting: Game 6 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 10/27/2014

Let's hope the Kansas City Royals win Game 6 of the World Series back at home vs. San Francisco on Tuesday, although I did project Giants in six before the Fall Classic began. I'd definitely like to see a Game 7, although I will have to switch back and forth from the baseball to the Bulls-Knicks NBA opener on Wednesday. The last Game 7 of a World Series was in 2011 when the Cardinals -- at home -- beat the Texas Rangers. Before that you had to go back to 2002 when the Angels beat the Giants in seven games. I do think another World Series title stamps San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy's ticket to Cooperstown.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 10/27/2014

Could the Carolina Hurricanes be on pace to be one of the worst teams in NHL history? I'm not really ready to say that yet, but the Canes certainly appear like the worst in the league this season. They are the only team without a victory and have just two points through seven games. Every other team has at least seven entering Monday. Carolina is 27th in goals per game at 2.0 and 29th in goals against at 3.9.

Dallas Cowboys Running Back DeMarco Murray

Monday Night Football Picks: Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys Odds
by Alan Matthews - 10/24/2014

Redskins-Cowboys on “Monday Night Football”? Yeah, you have heard that record before. This is the 16th time the NFC East rivals will meet under the Monday night lights. The only rivalry that has been staged more on MNF is Raiders-Broncos with 17, and the Raiders probably aren't going to be on MNF for several years, so that could be passed by 2016.

Free Expert NFL Picks: Philadelphia Eagles at Arizona Cardinals Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/23/2014

There are some pretty good matchups worth looking at Sunday in Week 8. Bears-Patriots looked like a marquee matchup back in the preseason, but now it's desperation time for Chicago. I pondered that one but am sure will have to look at Broncos-Patriots next week. It's federal mandate to preview a Peyton Manning-Tom Brady showdown.

MLB World Series Betting: Game 3 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 10/23/2014

Thank you, Kansas City Royals. I don't really care who wins this World Series, although like most outside of the San Francisco Bay Area I am pulling for the underdog Royals because they haven't won anything in 29 years. Before this series began, I leaned the Giants in six games, and I still feel that way. However, I am thrilled the Royals won Game 2 on Wednesday night -- this is just the second World Series where the first two games were both decided by five runs or more -- because other than K.C.'s wild-card win over Oakland, these playoffs have been rather dull.

NBA Props Odds and Picks: Scoring, Rebounds and Assists Leaders
by Alan Matthews - 10/23/2014

I don't know about you, but I am probably more excited about this NBA season since at least LeBron James' first with the Heat when he became the league's No. 1 villain. Amazing how things have changed in four years as now James is back in Cleveland and again the NBA's most popular player. You can go home again!

San Diego Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers

Free Expert NFL Picks: San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/21/2014

First place in the AFC West and an early key head-to-head tiebreaker is on the line here. The Broncos (5-1) are the only team in the AFC with just the lone loss. The Chargers (5-2) maybe got caught looking ahead a bit to this one on Sunday when they were upset at home by Kansas City. Or perhaps it's just because Andy Reid-coached teams almost never lose off a bye week. But that defeat took a small bit of luster off this one.

NFL Football Predictions: Week 8 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/21/2014

With all due respect to Peyton Manning throwing his NFL-record 509th career touchdown pass, the most interesting thing to happen in the NFL in Week 7 was the Seattle Seahawks' shocking trade of Percy Harvin to the New York Jets. Seattle gave up three draft picks, including a first-rounder, to get Harvin from the Vikings before the 2013 season even though Harvin had a well-known reputation for being a major locker-room cancer.

PGA Tour Picks: The McGladrey Classic Odds and Predictions
by Alan Matthews - 10/21/2014

I'll just be honest here in that I had barely heard of golfer Ben Martin -- he probably never heard of me, either -- before he was the surprise winner of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas last week. The week before, Martin had shot 78-79 at the Frys.com Open to miss the cut and finish with the second-worst score in the field. So of course he then shot a 20-under 264, highlighted by a third-round 62, for his first Tour win in career start No. 56.

MLB World Series Betting: Game 1 Opening Line Report
by Alan Matthews - 10/20/2014

Well, here we have the World Series that I correctly projected back in spring training: San Francisco Giants against Kansas City Royals. Uh, NOT! I am stunned this is the Fall Classic matchup. I didn't think San Francisco would beat Washington or St. Louis. I thought Kansas City would get stomped by the Los Angeles Angels, although beating the Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS wasn't a shocker. But you will never convince me these are the two best teams in baseball. They are just the two hottest right now.

NCAA Football Predictions: Week 9 Opening Line Report and Picks
by Alan Matthews - 10/20/2014

How ridiculous is the SEC West? In Monday's Associated Press poll that division has four teams in the Top 5. That's just silly and a first for any conference to hold down 80 percent of the Top 5. Mississippi State, which was off last week, remains at No. 1, with Ole Miss at No. 3, Alabama jumping three spots to No. 4 and Auburn moving up a spot to No. 5. I'm not sure Notre Dame deserved to drop from No. 5 to No. 7 after that thrilling loss at Florida State on Saturday.

NHL Hockey Odds and Picks: Scouting the Week Ahead
by Alan Matthews - 10/20/2014

A couple of weeks ago in this space I wrote that Dallas forward Tyler Seguin was great value at 15/1 to win the Hart Trophy in the NHL this season. Well, I'm not quite ready to gloat about that yet, but so far so good. Seguin enters Monday tied for third in the league with eight points, and he was the NHL's first star for last week.

NBA Odds and Picks: Which Division Does Champion Come From?
by Alan Matthews - 10/18/2014

With the 2014-15 NBA season less than two weeks away -- opening night is Tuesday, Oct. 28 -- the sportsbooks are rolling out more and more season, team and individual props every day. Here I will look at which division houses the NBA champion with odds courtesy of Sportsbook.ag. I wonder why the site doesn't do this for the NFL, NHL or MLB.
