Coco Crisp Oakland Athletics

2015 Oakland Athletics Predictions and Odds to Win the World Series
by Alan Matthews - 2/27/2015

The Oakland A's were quite an interesting team in 2014. They were the best club in baseball for the first half, entering the All-Star Break at 59-36 and with a run differential of plus-145 that was nearly double the second-best team. Oakland is a small-market team, but aggressive General Manager Billy Beane made a big trade in early July, sending the team's top two prospects, shortstop Addison Russell and outfielder Billy McKinney, to the Cubs for pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel.

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Yu Darvish

2015 Texas Rangers Predictions and Odds to Win the World Series
by Alan Matthews - 2/26/2015

The Texas Rangers entered last season having won at least 90 games each of the previous four years and fully expecting to again in 2014. After all, the Rangers had made two big offseason additions, trading second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit for Prince Fielder, one of the top sluggers in baseball, and signing big-money free-agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo. I certainly thought the Rangers would be in the mix in the AL West again.

Evan Longoria Tampa Bay Rays

2015 Tampa Bay Rays Predictions and Odds to Win the World Series
by Alan Matthews - 2/24/2015

Since 2008, Joe Maddon's second season as manager, the Tampa Bay Rays were the little engine that could in baseball and became envied by just about every other team. The Rays started winning despite a meager payroll and terrible fan support in the majors' worst ballpark because they were smarter than everyone else.

Jose Altuve Houston Astros

2015 Houston Astros Predictions and Odds to Win the World Series
by Alan Matthews - 2/21/2015

The darkest period in the history of the Houston Astros franchise looks like it might almost be over. In the midst of a total and utter rebuild and stripping down of the payroll, Houston led the majors in losses each year from 2011-13, not totaling less than 106. Even the expansion Colt .45's dropped only 96 games in their first season. TV ratings are at near-zero for Astros games in Houston and fans aren't exactly coming out in droves to the ballpark.

The Milwaukee Brewers' Ryan Braun

2015 Milwaukee Brewers Predictions and Odds to Win the World Series
by Alan Matthews - 2/17/2015

I try to project one dark-horse playoff team in each league when doing these MLB season previews every year. Last season my National League choice was Milwaukee. I was feeling pretty good about that for a majority of the 2014 campaign as the Brewers were atop the NL Central for most of the way. However, they fell apart at the end, losing 22 of their final 31 games to finish 82-80 and out of the playoffs for a third straight season.

Julio Teheran of the Atlanta Braves

2015 Atlanta Braves Predictions and Odds to Win the World Series
by Alan Matthews - 2/16/2015

Perhaps no team has had a more fascinating offseason than the Braves, and I don't mean that in a good way. But let me back up for a minute. At the 2014 All-Star Break, the Braves were tied with the Washington Nationals for first in the NL East. Entering September, Atlanta was seven games over .500 and just 1.5 games out of the second wild-card spot. A sixth straight winning season appeared a lock and a third straight trip to the playoffs a good possibility.

Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer

2015 Minnesota Twins Predictions and Odds to Win the World Series
by Alan Matthews - 2/13/2015

Assuming you aren't a fan of the team, I'm willing to bet you can't name me five Minnesota Twins outside of Joe Mauer and perhaps Phil Hughes. Can you name two? One? Indeed, the Twins are probably the most non-descript team in the majors, taking that title away from the San Diego Padres after all the Fathers have added this offseason. Teams are going to want to beat Minnesota now, however, because the Twins have a loaded farm system led by No. 2 overall prospect Byron Buxton. You could see him and fellow mega-prospect Miguel Sano (less likely) later in the 2015 season.

After picking up the win on Sunday night, Jake Peavy and the San Francisco Giants will be looking to win the World Series when they face Yordano Ventura and the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. James Shields missed his spots and the Giants took advantage Game 1 on Tuesday. He could only make it through three innings in that outing and gave up five runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out one. Including that loss, the right-hander is now 1-1 in these playoffs with a 7.11 ERA and he has given up 28 hits in 19 innings of work.
