Cotto and Klitschko's Chins Prevail, Will RJ's? When Ricardo Torres (28-0, 26 KO) was picked as a last minute opponent for super prospect Miguel Cotto, I was a bit surprised. Oddsmakers put Torres at +1200, so I took a chance on a $50 bet and almost saw it turn to $600. Torres had Cotto hurt badly many times in the fight, but Cotto kept coming back. Cotto stayed on his feet all night despite being visibly hurt. Torres started to lose control around round 6, when he was dropped with a headshot and got up without the same zeal he had showed. Cotto then put the finishing touches on Torres with a vicious display of body punching. Cotto does have a striking resemblance fightwise to fellow countryman Felix Trinidad, but Cotto takes much longer to recover. Wladimir Klitschko was an underdog against undefeated bully Samuel Peter, and Doc's recognized right away his great value. Wlad started at +300, but was down to +160 by fight time, obviously Doc's wasn't the only one picking Wlad. Wlad came out a bit aggressive, but soon started to stay on the outside and potshot with jabs and right hands. Peter did drop Wlad three times, but two did seem to be behind the head. Either way a great win for Wladimir Klitschko, but I wonder how his confidence got so low he was afraid to do anything when Peter was done in round 12 from a vicious right hand. Peter was no longer dangerous and Wladimir Klitschko could have sealed the show and put a nice late knockdown on his resume. Despite this Wlad still hung on to get a well earned victory on points. This coming weekend is definitely what boxing has needed. It offers good fights on Showtime and a Pay Per View by HBO, both on Saturday. Thank god for Tivo, as I will be able to enjoy both. HBO's PPV is none other than the grudge match between home-state rivals Roy Jones Jr. and Antonio Tarver. Everyone knows Jones snuck out a controversial decision, than was KO'd with one punch by Tarver in the rematch. Jones then went on to get KO'd by journeyman Glen Johnson after that as well, setting up two fights between Johnson and Tarver. Tarver split the fights and his win in the rematch set up this epic fight. These two have been rivals for more than 20 years and this will either be Roy Jones' shining moment of glory, or a disappointing end to a great career. Either way the event is sure to be a perfect appetizer to the following weekend's rematch between warriors Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo. Doc's has definitely done their homework to come up with the best possible play, and they once again found an underdog play, be sure to take full advantage. Showtime's card is now a doubleheader, featuring James Toney vs. Dominick Guinn and IBF champ Chris Byrd against DaVarryl Williamson. Both fights will be very important for the Heavyweight division, and it may even set up a long talked about match between Toney and Byrd, if both are successful.
