But this can also be a dangerous time for unsuspecting gamblers. Making winning betting predictions this time of year is a lot more difficult in practice than it is enjoyable in theory.

Handicapping March Madness requires a different approach and mindset than the rest of the college basketball betting season. The stakes couldn’t be higher – win or else. The teams couldn’t be more intense. And everyone, from the oddsmakers to the prognosticators to the media bobbleheads to the die-hard homer fans, remains powerless to the trappings of March and the insanity it brings.

1. Spreads mean less than matchups do.

The NCAA Tournament throws teams from different leagues, sizes and backgrounds together in several all-out, free-for-all tournaments. (Don’t overlook the NIT or other smaller tournaments.) These teams don’t have a lot of time to scout one another or prepare for an opponent from the Sun Belt or Big Sky or some other corner of the globe. And teams that run quirky, hard-to-prep-for systems (think: Princeton offense) or teams that utilize contrasting styles from their opponents (up-tempo team against team that likes to milk the shot clock) can usualy cover spreads and keep games closer than the public expects.

It is an old cliché: “styles make fights”. And it is true with March Madness betting.

2. Home court advantage is gone, but not forgotten.

The ability to win on the road or a neutral site is a rare gift. Just about any college team can dominate in their own gym, with the crowd and the refs on their side. But being able to show up any time, anywhere, and gut out a victory doesn’t come naturally. You need to know which teams have this talent and which teams couldn’t win a road game if they were playing a high school opponent.

Also, just because most tournament games are played on neutral sites (some of the smaller March tournaments are held on campus), that won’t mean that the crowds do not become a factor. Some teams are placed in locations close to home or at least near enough for a large contingent of supporters to go cheer them on. Also, things like teams having to travel cross-country, or teams crossing time zones for early and late tip-offs can have an impact on what happens on the court.

3. Momentum and motivation can trump talent.

One of the most important things about making winning handicapping picks in March is to ride the wave. It is about getting hot and going with it. The same can be said for the teams on the court. Some times things just click for a team. And against all odds, and in spite of all obstacles, they are capable of going on monster runs both on the hardwood and at the window. Sometimes it is an underdog – like Connecticut in 2011 – and sometimes it is a powerful favorite – like North Carolina in 2009 – but each year some of the best bets are made simply by jumping on board a team that picks up steam and gains momentum at just the right time. If you find a team in a groove or see a team peaking, grab on with both hands and hold on until the ride is over.
