Trinidad and Tobago's entry into the 2006 FIFA World Cup marks the first time this Caribbean nation has qualified for soccer's most illustrious event. Having only received one point from its first three matches, Trinidad and Tobago gained some much needed guidance when its more experienced Dutch Coach Leo Beenhakker arrived to take the place of coach Bertille St. Claire.
With a new coach at its helm, Trinidad and Tobago won its next match versus Panama, 2-0. With its first victory in place, the Soca Warriors played well against Mexico and the USA, but took losses. A victory over rival Guatemala gave the team one last chance in a playoff against Bahrain. That 1-0 victory sent the Caribbean nation into a joyous celebration, as it would become a member of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Trinidad and Tobago World Cup 2006 Team Odds: Sportsbooks have listed Trinidad and Tobago as the true underdog of the tournament at 800/1 odds to win the World Cup.
Strengths: Trinidad and Tobago will come to Germany with nothing to lose. No one has or will give this Caribbean nation a chance in any one of its games. Although it will struggle to compete, Trinidad and Tobago will fight until each match concludes. Dwight Yorke, the heart and soul of his team, finally has received his one and only chance to play in a World Cup, as he will likely retire before the next tournament. Yorke, who played for a UEFA Champions League winner during time spent with Manchester United, along with forward Stern John and the talented Russell Latapy, will not go down without a fight and will contend to challenge any man between the sticks.
Unknown to most, these Soca Warriors will not be talked about much before the matches get underway this summer in Germany. While most of its opponents will use its politically correct voice and say it cannot overlook anyone in the tournament, no one expects to lose to Trinidad and Tobago. This alone could place added emphasis on the desire to pull off the upset and show the world it can be successful beyond the qualifying rounds.
Weaknesses: Quite possibly the most unsure team headed to Germany, Trinidad and Tobago can rely on heart and its veteran leadership to attempt to pull off a great upset with any victory during its time in Germany. It will be obvious once play begins that this Caribbean nation cannot match talent-for-talent versus any team it plays, so luck will have to reign a constant attribute for Trinidad and Tobago to advance beyond group play. With that said, it will be interesting to follow this team through its first FIFA World Cup to see how the pressure is managed and see if it can shock the world.
Trinidad and Tobago World Cup 2006 Outlook: Sad to say, do not expect much from Trinidad and Tobago. This small nation may not be physically dominated in every match, but outside of a few match-ups, it simply does not have the talent to hold its own throughout a consistent tournament schedule. Its fans and love from its home country may be enough to spark a valiant attempt to dethrone a favorite, but nothing more.
