World Cup Team Betting Odds and Props
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 6/5/2010
The mountain of World Cup wagers continues to grow at Bodog’s online sportsbook, where we just posted a plethora of World Cup team props for the big tournament in South Africa. Remember that the action kicks off June 11 so you’ll want to take a gander and get your money down before the odds are pulled off the board.
So far we’ve come up with three types of team props for the World Cup.
The first asks bettors to predict the team’s leading scorer. For example, the favorite to lead England in scoring is Wayne Rooney, at 11/8 odds. Frank Lampard (11/2), Jermain Defoe (11/2) and Peter Crouch (7/1) are also among the contenders to lead the Three Lions. If you’re the most pessimistic England supporter that’s ever lived, you can even take “no goal scorer” at 100/1, which you might as well parlay with “Fabio Capello goes missing, foul play suspected.”
Our next kind of World Cup team prop gives odds on which stage a country will be eliminated. Sadly, the favorite for the United States is the group stage at 6/5. The second round (13/10) is another fairly likely exit point according to odds makers, but making it to final eight (5/1) has been deemed rather unlikely.
For the record, if the United States finishes second to England in Group C (the likeliest of scenarios), the Americans will play the winner of Group D in the knockout stage. That’s likely to be Germany, which enters the tournament with a number of questions surrounding the squad, including how it’ll handle the absence of injured Michael Ballack. In other words, it would not be the biggest upset in World Cup history if the United States eliminated Germany in the round of 16.
Our third team prop is total goals for each country, bettors choose over or under. Some interesting numbers for this one. Brazil and Spain are tied with the highest total: 10.5. Then there’s poor New Zealand at 1.5.
A few of the options bettors have been hammering since the odds were posted are Cameroon (over 3.5), Nigeria (under 4.5), Algeria (under 2.5), Slovenia (over 2.5) and Australia (under 3.5). There’s not much value left if you agree with those. On the other hand, if you disagree, there are some pretty tempting odds for you to take advantage of.
