Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb

Will Donovan McNabb Rejuvenate His Career in Minny?
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 8/5/2011

To say it didn’t work in Washington would be an understatement. Donovan McNabb’s one-year stint with the Redskins was a downright disaster. Statistically, quarterbacks have fared worse. But it’s never just about stats. The former Philadelphia Eagle found himself part of a dysfunctional group led by new coach Mike Shanahan. And in Week 8 when Shanahan pulled McNabb late in a game against Detroit so that Rex Grossman (of all guys) could run the two-minute drill, well, it was tough to recover from that.

Football is Back, Baby
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/27/2011

To be perfectly honest, we were never very worried. The NFL is simply too profitable to let a labor dispute get in the way of making money. That being said, we still felt a sense of relief when the league and the union came to an agreement on a CBA and the lockout was ended. Yes, folks, football is back. (Granted, it never really left.)

Compelling Conference Races Await in College Football
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/22/2011

It’s going to be a while before I’m used to calling it the Pac-12. Just doesn’t sound right. But that’s the way it is in 2011, with Utah and Colorado joining the conference formerly known as the Pac-10. Speaking of which, we’ve just released our conference odds at Bodog’s online sportsbook.

Canadian Open Golf Wagering Strong the Week After Majors
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/21/2011

We always experience an “echo” after major tournaments, with bettors either investing their winnings or chasing their losses. Majors draw so much action relative to other tournaments that it’s only natural for this to occur.

USA vs. Japan Women’s World Cup Odds: Historic Betting Expected
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/15/2011

America has fallen head over heels in love with its national women’s soccer team. The buzz that the plucky United States squad – which will face Japan in the World Cup final on Sunday in Germany – has created is quite something to behold.

MLB: Betting on the 2011 MVP
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/14/2011

There are two unofficial halves to the baseball season. They’re not exact halves, but they’re close enough. The first “half” comes to a close at the All-Star break, something the players just enjoyed with some time off or by traveling to Phoenix to be part of the festivities. But now it’s back to business; and with the second half of the season underway, we’ve put together a handful of props to kick the stretch drive into gear at Bodog’s online sportsbook.

Tour de France Odds and Betting
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/8/2011

The Tour de France is underway over in Europe and you might be surprised how much betting interest in the race we’ve had from our players over at Bodog’s online sportsbook. Cycling isn’t a particularly popular sport in North America. It’s had its surges in media exposure, particularly during the heyday of Lance Armstrong, who won the Tour de France seven straight times from 1999 to 2005. But mostly road racing has been a European passion.

Home Run Derby Odds: Bautista the Favorite
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/7/2011

The baseballs will be flying back, back, back, back and out of the park on Monday in the annual Home Run Derby, this year’s version being held at Chase Field in Phoenix, Ariz. Boston’s David Ortiz is the defending champion, having bashed 32 dingers in total last year in Anaheim. Big Papi defeated Hanley Ramirez, 11-5, in the final round to take the crown.

Boxer Wladimir Klitschko

O Boxing, Where Art Thou?
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/7/2011

It was supposed to help put boxing back on the map. Instead it might’ve hurt the languishing sport even more. Wladimir Klitschko fended off (and I mean that as literally as possible) David Haye on Saturday in Germany to win one of the most hyped heavyweight fights in some time. But for all the pre-match excitement and trash talking, the bout delivered nothing but snores.

How Will the NBA Lockout Affect the Sportsbooks?
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/5/2011

Nobody expected a deal to get done at the last minute. And it didn’t. Not to be outdone by the NFL, the NBA locked out its players on Friday. MLB Odds: Marquis Leads Money-Making Pitchers
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 6/27/2011

All told, the Nationals are 12-3 when Marquis starts, making the 32-year-old the most profitable pitcher in baseball. To be fair, the offence deserves a lot of the credit for that record. Marquis is right up there with baseballs leaders in run support. In other words, there have been games when he hasn’t had his best stuff and the bats have come through.

Bodog Bookie: Hockey Betting Never More Popular
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 6/8/2011

The Boston Bruins made it a series Monday night, throttling the Vancouver Canucks, 8-1, at TD Garden. Other than the blowout that gave the B’s their first win of the 2011 Stanley Cup final after the Canucks had taken the first two games back in Vancouver, the night was marred by an ugly hit on Nathan Horton by Aaron Rome that sent the Boston forward off on a stretcher and to the hospital.

NBA Odds: Mavs Make It a Series, Sports Books Happy
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 6/4/2011

The one thing we didn’t want was a short series. And late in Thursday’s Game 2 of the 2011 NBA Finals, it was looking like a short one was a very real possibility. The Heat led the Mavericks by 15 points in the fourth quarter, meaning Miami was on the cusp of traveling to Dallas up two games to none. If the Heat won Game 3 there, you could pretty much close the book.

Stanley Cup Odds: Kesler Leads Conn Smythe Candidates
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 5/31/2011

The pucks drops on the 2011 Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday as the Vancouver Canucks host the Boston Bruins at Rogers Arena. This should be a great series, and I know we’ll book a lot of action on it, perhaps the most NHL betting in Bodog history. Vancouver is a heavy -235 favorite to hoist hockey’s holy grail, while the B’s can be had at a tempting +195.

MLB Odds: Red Sox have Recovered After Brutal Start
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 5/26/2011

The Boston Red Sox began the 2011 Major League Baseball season with six straight losses. NBA Odds: Is This Finally the Year for the Mavs?
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 5/11/2011

The Dallas Mavericks have broken the hearts of their fans on so many occasions. Despite a winning record in every season since 2000-01, a first-ever NBA championship has eluded the Mavs. Oh, they’ve come close; losing to Miami in the 2006 NBA Finals. But most of the time it’s been the story of an underachieving squad, the worst such instance coming in the 2007 playoffs when Dallas went 67-15 in the regular season and lost to Golden State in the first round.

NBA Odds: Could a Cinderella Actually Win an NBA Championship?
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 5/3/2011

The Atlanta Hawks hardly went into the NBA playoffs riding a hot streak. In fact, they couldn’t have been much colder, losing six straight to finish the regular season. True, a few of those games were meaningless, with Atlanta locked into the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference. Still, after a 115-83 loss to the dreadful Washington Wizards in their third-to-last game, Atlanta coach Larry Drew didn’t seem too hopeful about his team’s chances against the Orlando Magic.

by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 4/29/2011

They didn’t make it easy on themselves, but the Vancouver Canucks escaped the first round of the NHL playoffs on Tuesday. And when I say escape, I mean escape. By the skin of their teeth. After watching a 3-0 series lead over the defending champion Blackhawks melt away in front of their eyes, Alex Burrows scored in overtime of Game 7 at Rogers Arena to prevent what would’ve been one of the most famous chokes in sports history.

NCAA Tournament Projections: Conference Tourneys Last Stop for Many
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 3/9/2011

This might seem like an obvious thing to say, but one of the most important things in sports betting is determining which team is more motivated to win the game. After all, if you don’t really care about winning, you’re a lot more likely to lose.

BYU Loses Davies. Lose Hope, Too?
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 3/4/2011

The Cougars didn’t fare so well in their first test without Brandon Davies. Not very well at all. On Tuesday, the sophomore forward was banished from the BYU basketball team for the rest of the season after it was revealed he violated the university's strict honor code. The next day, the No. 3 Cougars fell 82-64 to New Mexico in Provo.

The Los Angeles Kings pulled off the biggest deal of the NHL trade deadline when they acquired hulking forward Dustin Penner from the Edmonton Oilers. To make the deal, Kings general manager Dean Lombardi didn’t have to sacrifice anything but the future in minor-league defenseman Colten Teubert, a first-round pick in this summer’s draft and a second- or third-round pick in 2012.

College Basketball Picks: Duke at Virginia Tech Odds and Predictions
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 2/25/2011

And it’s not just that the Blue Devils are winning – they’ve only lost twice this season, after all – it’s that they’re winning by big margins. Since the disaster at MSG, six of their seven victories have been by double digits. Not surprisingly, it’s been a great time to bet on the Blue Devils. In fact, the only point spread they didn’t cover was the 10.5 they gave to North Carolina on Feb. 9, a 79-73 victory.

Melo Trade No Slam Dunk for Knicks Backers
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 2/23/2011

At Bodog we’ve got the Knicks at 30/1 odds to win the 2011 NBA title and have, not surprisingly, booked a good deal of action on them since Monday. New York now boasts two of the premier players in basketball so the excitement surrounding the team is understandable. Still, our oddsmakers obviously don’t believe this move puts the Knicks into the category of favorites. The Miami Heat are currently at 11/5 odds, followed by seven other teams before New York.

Betting on Lakers Not Smart These Days
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 2/17/2011

Shouldn’t happen. Can’t happen. But it happened. The Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night. Yes, the Cavaliers. The worst team in the NBA. The same team the Lakers beat by 55 the last time they played. It was Cleveland’s 10th win of the season. All in all, just a terrible effort from Kobe Bryant et al. Betting action on the Lakers will no doubt be affected.

The San Francisco Giants might be the defending MLB champions, but their manager thinks the Philadelphia Phillies are the team to beat in 2011. "Because of track record, I think you would have to look at their staff as the best in baseball," Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle, referring to pitchers Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels and Joe Blanton. NFL Betting Recap for Wild Card Playoffs
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 1/12/2011

At Bodog Sportsbook, a large majority of our players were all over the Ravens, and for good reason. Baltimore finished the regular season with a 12-4 record and took on a Chiefs team that, to its credit, won 10 games in the regular season, but to its detriment only beat one playoff team along the way, the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks. With that in mind, I wasn’t at all surprised the way the betting went. In fact, we often find ourselves rooting for home underdogs. It just didn’t go our way this time around.

The first week of the NFL season had plenty of thrills and surprises for bettors, some of them profitable, others not so much. Let’s start with a few of the games where the players came out on top. In the morning, it seemed like the whole world was behind Miami (-3) at Buffalo, which the Dolphins covered with a 15-10 victory.

NFL Week 1 Over & Under Team Props
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 9/9/2010

It was a humiliating experience for the New England Patriots, a 33-14 home defeat to the Baltimore Ravens in last year’s playoffs in which the ball was essentially jammed down their throats. When all was said and done, Ray Rice and his Ravens had racked up 234 yards rushing on a whopping 52 carries. Not surprisingly, the hometown crowd was left seriously unimpressed.

by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 9/8/2010

At Bodog’s online sportsbook, we think we’ve got a pretty good handle on how the betting will go as the NFL kicks off Week 1 of the regular season on Thursday in New Orleans. We’ve done the research. We’ve tested the waters with the pre-season and seen how our players have been betting the props and futures boards. But things can change quickly in sports, so we’ll have to stay on our toes all week as the bets roll in.

Will your favorite NFL team make the playoffs? That’s the big question for most football fans at the regular season gets closer and closer. NFL Regular Season Odds: 18-Game Schedule Good for Books & Bottom Line
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 8/27/2010

. The more NFL games that actually mean something and are televised nationally, the better for us. Obviously there’s a limit to how many games a football player’s body can survive, and you don’t want to water down your product, but even an additional two games would mean a lot for our bottom line.

NFL Hall of Fame Game Betting Recap
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 8/13/2010

It was by no means a great game, but at least we were betting on NFL football again. The Dallas Cowboys and the Cincinnati Bengals squared off in the 2010 Hall of Fame Game on Sunday in Canton, Ohio. Dallas beat Cincinnati 16-7 as three-point underdogs, which ended up being a good result for the book. The game also went under the total of 33, another win for us.

Tiger Woods Betting Odds for PGA Championship
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 8/12/2010

Tiger Woods will once again be the big story heading into the PGA Championship this week at Whistling Straits outside Milwaukee. With rumors linking Tiger to swing coach Sean Foley surfacing on Monday, most people were still trying to get a handle on what they saw last weekend at Firestone. Was that really Tiger Woods hacking around out there? Because it didn’t look like Tiger Woods. Frankly, it looked like John Daly after a particularly hard-drinking night and a trip to the drunk tank.

by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 7/14/2010

The 2010 Open Championship tees off Thursday at St. Andrews. At Bodog’s online sportsbook, we’re seeing good interest on our odds for the third major of the year, but perhaps not on the one player you’d expect. Tiger Woods is getting 5/1 odds to win his third Open Championship at the Old Course – he also won in 2000 and 2005 – but given his up and down play in 2010 he hasn’t drawn as much action as we’ve been used to seeing in past years.

MLB All-Star Game Home Run Derby a Hit with Bettors
by Richard Gardner - 7/13/2010

The Home Run Derby as part of MLB’s All-Star Game festivities has come under quite a bit of fire recently. Lots of people say that it’s not original anymore. There aren’t enough star players participating. (Nick Swisher? Really?) It’s too long and drawn out. Bookmaker’s Corner: March Madness Wrap-up
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 4/7/2010

The 2010 NCAA men’s basketball tournament wrapped up rather nicely for Duke on Monday night with a 61-59 victory over Butler. From the book’s perspective, it was a great way to end a great tournament. As is fairly common for big games, most of the action was on one of either the favorite to cover the spread or the underdog to win outright.

Do me a favour and forget about the NCAA tourney for a couple of minutes and turn your attention towards NBA betting. No, the Los Angeles Lakers have not tanked (they’ve been enjoying a fairly easy schedule as of late); and yes, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed center Zydrunas Ilgauskas (after trading him to Washington about a month ago). History was made on Super Bowl Sunday and I know I can’t speak for every football fan or online sportsbook when I say this, but it sure was fun to watch. Bookmaker’s Corner: Recent Super Bowl Classics
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 1/26/2010

The Indianapolis Colts opened as 6-point favorites over the New Orleans Saints, with a total of 56.5. The early action was on Indianapolis, although it wasn’t a landslide by any means. The Colts are certainly deserved favorites, what with the fact they’ve won every game they’ve tried to win this season. But the inspirational Saints are no slouches, and they’ll undoubtedly receive the lion’s share of the support from the fans in Miami.

Bookmaker’s Corner: NFL Football Betting Lines: Are Wild Cards Indeed
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 1/13/2010

The NFL’s wild card weekend was a good one for Bodog Sportsbook’s NFL football betting lines. Unfortunately for most of our players it wasn’t very good at all. Bookmaker’s Corner: College Football Betting Season in Review
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 1/13/2010

The 2009-10 college football betting season started off great, but then ended on a not-so-great note for us over at Bodog Sportsbook. We saw a late flood of money come in on Alabama, which moved the number from -4 to -5, and we paid the price. Crimson Tide fans, on the other hand, had to be pleased with the way Alabama finished off the season; beating Texas 37-21 in the BCS National Championship Game is about as good as it gets.

NFL Week 3 Prop Betting: Running Backs
by Richard Gardner, Bookmaker, Bodog Sportsbook - 9/24/2009

You can’t really talk about the NFL’s best performing running backs without first mentioning Adrian Peterson. You can bet that NFL props bettors are eager to see how he’ll do in Week 3 when the Minnesota Vikings host the San Francisco 49ers.

NCAA Football Week 1 Recap
by Richard Gardner | Bookmaker, Bodog Sportsbook - 9/9/2009

The first weekend of college football is in the books, and what did we learn? Well, good luck finding a better game in all of 2009 than the Miami-Florida State thriller on Labor Day night. Or good luck in finding a more disappointing effort all year than the performance of Oregon, and especially running back LeGarrette Blount, last Thursday on the blue turf in Boise.

Opening the Book on College Football Betting
by Richard Gardner | Bookmaker, Bodog.com Sportsbook - 9/2/2009

College football season kicks off on Sept. 3 and I can’t tell you how excited we are over at Bodog. Starting with the Oregon Ducks and Boise State Broncos on Thursday night, followed by some nice matchups on Saturday between Alabama and Virginia Tech, Georgia and Oklahoma State, Brigham Young and Oklahoma, (and, in my No. 1 recommended play of the weekend: Nevada +14 ½ at Notre Dame) – you know it’s going to be an action-packed start to yet another great season of NCAA football.

Golf bettors in search of value need to look no farther than this week’s FedEx Cup, which is the PGA Tour’s version of a playoff system. And today I’m here to talk about NFL preseason betting. In general, how the public is leaning in these games rarely matters because the handle is fairly low. In fact, the majority of the handle will come in on the day of the game. So far this preseason, it appears bettors are leaning toward the underdogs.
