Betcom Weekend WRAP: This past weekend's action from a bookmaker's point-of-view
by Jimmy Mason, Director of Sportsbook Operations - 08/02/2005

This Weekend was great for the players as Saturday was as lopsided a day as we've seen this season and Sunday being a wash. The favorites went an amazing 12-2 (With one of the two lonely dogs who did bark being the White Sox which doesn't really count J ) on Saturday!

Again, Saturday was simply horrendous as we lost all three of our big decisions. Surprisingly while other books were moving the Red Sox line down from -200 to -185, we were moving the line higher from -185 to -200. This move was caused by two things. First the players knew about Torii Hunter’s injured ankle and second the public has a propensity to bet against Kyle (Lousy) Lohse. We took a beating as the Red Sox rolled 6-2 over the anemic Twins.

We also saw a big decision on the Reds and Padres. We saw the Reds climb from -105 all the way to -119 with Cincinnati playing well of late (7-3, last 10 games) and the Padres imploding (1-9, last 10 games) there was no reason not to bet the reds. Then a major Midwestern handicapper ‘released’ the Reds as his MLB game of the season. Factor in the Pedro Astacio was making his first start of the season after only four relief appearances this and there certainly were a multitude of reasons to lay the Reds, especially at that low price! This one was never in doubt as the Reds rolled 9-1.

The Braves and Pirates game was another strange line move for us. As I’ve stated often, our head linesmaker books to our action! Many bookmakers, most bookmakers today really, simply move the line when the competition does figuring someone must know something that they don’t.  The Braves opened at -160 and cam down early at most places as the ‘sharps’ dropped money on the Pirates knowing they have been a pebble in the Braves shoe all season. Our players kept right on laying the chalk and we closed up at -160 when most of the competition closed at -150.

Until next week, may all your wagers be winners…
Jimmy Mason
