NHL Power Rankings

The regular season is over, so now is the time to look back, and to look forward. To do that we're going to do the NHL Power Rankings slightly differently for this final version. The first 16 spots will be reserved for the playoff teams, and they will be ranked in their likelihood of and ability to go all the way in the playoffs. The remaining 14 spots will be the 14 non-playoff teams, and they will be ranked both in terms of how they looked this past year and their ability to improve their circumstances next year. Without further ado:

It's been quite a while since we last checked in on the NHL Power Rankings. The crazy thing, though, is that things just haven't changed that much. Some teams have climbed and a couple of fallen had, but for the most part the teams that were the good ones before the Olympics still are, and vice versa. Previous rankings are in brackets:

There is a lot of movement in the rankings this week as there has been over the last few rankings. There's a good reason for that - I'm just not convinced that there is a lot of quality in the league right now. I really believe in the top three teams, but beyond that there isn't a lot of consistency, and it seems to be impossible to get a lasting impression of a team - as soon as you start to believe in them they go into the tank, or vice versa.

There have been some missteps - like a dull 4-2 loss at Ottawa on Tuesday - but the Blackhawks haven't really done anything to deserve a demotion out of the first spot. They are arguably the best team in the league regardless of some small struggles the last couple of weeks.

The Blackhawks have won seven of their last eight games, and they beat up on New Jersey when they got the chance. We knew coming into the season that these guys had a chance to be special, and they are certainly living up to the hype. Key stat - they allow the fewest shots against in the league. With an offense like theirs that's deadly.

The deeper we get into the season, the fewer dramatic changes we see in the NHL Power Rankings. Teams still rise and fall, but the more we know about teams the less we get surprised by their strengths and their inconsistencies. That means that you'll see more teams treading water in these power rankings than you have seen in the last few.

The Blackhawks have stumbled slightly recently, but they have still earned 21 of the last 26 points and are definitely rounding into form. Goaltending is still a bit of an issue, but they are as talented as any team in the league and they are showing it.

It's been two weeks since the last rankings, and we have seen a lot of movement. The biggest upward moves belong to the red-hot Blackhawks and their division-mates from Detroit. Colorado is the biggest faller, and I'm not at all convinced that they are done moving down yet. In several cases this week I have moved teams around based not just on their current play but also how that play compares to their potential.

It's still reasonably early in the NHL season, so it makes sense that these rankings are still changing significantly every time I do them. Only three teams - the Rangers, Predators, and Wild - stayed in their same position in the NHL Power Rankings. Philadelphia was the big mover, climbing all the way to the third spot from No. 14 last time. Ottawa is the biggest dropper, falling eight spots to No. 18. (Previous ranking in brackets)

It's been an exciting and, in many ways, very surprising start to the NHL season. Some good teams are better than we thought, while others have been lousy. Some teams that looked lousy on paper can't seem to lose. All the differences mean that the NHL power rankings will be quite different now than they were when we started the season. Let's have a look (previous rankings in brackets):

It's time for the first of many NHL Power Rankings for this season. We'll revisit these rankings every two weeks through the season, and you can be sure that there will be lots of movement each time in the fluid and fast-changing league. I especially like looking at Power Rankings early in the season because they bear so little similarity to what was expected coming into the season, and to how things are likely to look by April.
