2008 NFL Mock Draft
by Robert Ferringo - updated 04/23/2008

The 2008 NFL Draft will take place this weekend, starting Saturday morning and running into Sunday afternoon. I have said that the draft is the biggest gamble in sports. And I think I'm right. So trying to predict how teams are going to maneuver - especially 20 picks down the line and in spite of the fact that one domino can send the whole day in a completely different direction - is a bit like trying to predict where rain drops are going to fall on your windshield.

But I'm a trained professional and a gambling man myself; so let's give this a shot. Below is my final NFL mock draft. I do believe that a team in the Top 10 - be it Atlanta, Kansas City, or New England - is going to make a move the voids out much of this. But if I can hit 10 of my 31 projections then I'd be pretty happy with my performance.

Without further ado, here is Doc's Sports' final 2008 NFL Mock Draft:

1. Miami Dolphins - Jake Long, OT, Michigan

Did I say "Chris" before? I meant Jake. My mistake. One down, nine correct predictions to go!

2. St. Louis Rams - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU

The Rams already have a ton of money wrapped up at defensive end with James Hall and Leonard "Designated Driver" Little. They also took Adam Carriker last year in the first round and stuck him at tackle, an area they are thin at. Grabbing Dorsey and pairing him with Carricker would give them a solid front four, with the flex to move Carricker to end if needs be.

3. Atlanta Falcons - Chris Long, DE, Virginia

I have said all along that I think the Falcons are going to either trade this pick or grab a defensive lineman. New head coach Mike Smith came from a Jacksonville club whose backbone was its defense. Specifically the defensive line. Long, or Dorsey if he's available, are also guys from Southern schools. And if you don't think that matters you've never lived in the South.

4. Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

I give up with Oakland. Who knows what Al Davis is going to do? I will say that if Chris Long is still on the board - that is, if the Falcons defy logic and take Matt Ryan - then I think Long will go to Oakland out of principle and Jerry Jones will wet himself. If not, McFadden is the sexy pick and you know that Al Davis, even at 113 years old, is still one sexy mofo.

5. Kansas City Chiefs - Branden Albert, OT, Boise State

This is where things get incredibly interesting. After trading Jared Allen to the Vikings for the 17th overall pick the Chiefs find themselves with a lot of cards to play. If the Raiders pass on McFadden then the Chiefs could try to swing a deal with the Cowboys. They could trade Dallas for a bargain price of a first- and second-round pick and then K.C. would have a ridiculous seven selections in the top 82 picks. Or, they could draft Matt Ryan here, get a quality offensive lineman at No. 17 and then pick up a defensive end at the top of Round 2. Or they could trade this pick and their second round pick (No. 35) to Atlanta, take McFadden, and then deal him to Dallas for two No. 1's, giving them three No 1 picks. As a Chiefs fan, could you imaging getting an offensive lineman, defensive end, and Brian Brohm in Round 1? That is how you rebuild.

These guys have a lot of moves that they could make and are one of the draft's wild cards heading into Saturday. I also think that anything that doesn't involve trading this pick is a missed opportunity.

6. New York Jets - Keith Rivers, LB, USC

No one has Rivers going to the Jets - in any mock draft on the net - and I don't understand why? You need linebackers to play a 3-4 and the Jets traded one of their best (Jon Vilma) and saw another starter (Vic Hobson) sign with rival New England. They need a linebacker. Rivers is the best on the board. And they would be grabbing a player that the team that picks after them - which happens to be said rivals, New England - has their sites on.

7. New England Patriots - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio State

Gholston offers solid value - if not bust potential.

8. Baltimore Ravens - Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College

In a heartbeat. New coach, new quarterback, new direction for an aging team.

9. Cincinnati Bengals - Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC

Would not be stunned if they took Ryan Clady here. They desperately need help on defense but I could see them grabbing an offensive lineman. Why? Because they're the Bungles.

10. New Orleans Saints - Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy

The Saints still have to be hoping that either Ellis or Rivers is on the board here. If not I think they stay on the defensive side and try to find someone to compensate for Jason David's crispiness.

11. Buffalo Bills - Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State

I suppose this makes the most sense. The Bills have a lot of guys coming back from injury and seemingly have a lot of depth on their team. Except at wideout. They believe they have their franchise quarterback. So let's give him a new toy.

12. Denver Broncos - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State

I still think the Broncos are foolish if they ignore their sieve of a defensive line. But if Clady is still on the board he might be too good to pass up.

13. Carolina Panthers - Jeff Otah, OT, Pitt

This team won't get back to winning until it rebuilds its line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. This would be a good start. And you can flip a coin between Otah and Chris Williams from Vandy.

14. Chicago Bears - Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt

This is a Must Have pick. It doesn't matter that Chicago doesn't have an NFL-caliber quarterback or running back. Those needs can be addressed in the later rounds. But they absolutely have to get some new blood on the O-line.

15. Detroit Lions - Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois

This is a vintage Matt Millen pick. The team is still desperate for linebackers, and they could still get someone like Ray Rice or Mike Hart in Round 2. But they're going to reach for a running back here that lacks elite speed. Sweet. Now that Isiah Thomas is out in New York Millen is clearly the worst GM in all of sports.

16. Arizona Cardinals - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State

I still think this team needs a running back. And if Mendenhall is still on the board he will be mighty tempting. But Arizona's secondary has been a wreck for literally decades so they will be filling a separate need.

17. Kansas City Chiefs - Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida

They went with the offensive line with their first pick so now it makes sense to grab Jared Allen's replacement with their second No. 1. Unfortunately, Allen was a manimal and whomever they get in the draft to replace him will have enormous shoes to fill.

18. Houston Texans - Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon

It's strange to me that the Texans seemingly have the exact same needs as the Cardinals do. I think that, inadvertently, whomever the Cardinals select will have a major bearing on what Houston does. If the Cards take Stewart, the Texans will get Cromartie (and I think that's what they want). Or vice versa.

19. Philadelphia Eagles - Jerod Mayo, LB, Tennessee

Andy Reid loves drafting large men. I don't think the team will pander to its fan base. Instead it will look to add an impact player in a need area.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida

I definitely think they should grab one of the top wideouts in this spot. Particularly Malcolm Kelly or James Hardy. But instead I think they nab a stud corner to replace Brian Kelly.

21. Washington Redskins - Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma

Even though Kelly had a terrible workout and was a little bitch afterwards, I still think the Redskins try to fill a need for a big wide receiver here. The Giants have Plexico and the Cowboys have T.O. Washington needs to keep up on the Large Wideout Train.

22. Dallas Cowboys - Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas

This is Jerry Jones' consolation prize if he can't trade up with Atlanta, Oakland, or Kansas City. I think Jones is going to be a stud in the pros. Especially if he ends up on turf.

23. Pittsburgh Steelers - Philip Merling, DE, Clemson

Big Ben lobbied for a tall wideout this offseason, but I think that the Steelers brass is smart enough to realize that they have serious cracks on both the offensive and defensive lines.

24. Tennessee Titans - DeSean Jackson, WR, Cal

They need a game breaker or three to give Vince Young and the running game a fighting chance. It doesn't matter which one they get, but the Titans need a wideout here.

25. Seattle Seahawks - Limas Sweed, WR, Texas

Deion Branch blew out his knee. D.J. Hackett is gone. Bobby Engram just turned 56. This team needs wideouts. Badly.

26. Jacksonville Jaguars - Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina

Marcus Stroud's departure leaves a void in the heart of this defense. I would love to see them get a speedy wide receiver but I think they will make that move in the second round.

27. San Diego Chargers - Gosder Cherilus, OT, Boston College

Right tackle is a need pick for an otherwise solid club. If Balmer is still on the board I think they make that move. But they were spoiled last year with Marcus McNeil. I think they try to go back-to-back with strong linemen.

28. Dallas Cowboys - Limas Sweed, WR, Texas

On the surface this looks like more pandering. But Sweed would fill a proposed "need" for the Cowboys.

29. San Francisco 49ers - Calais Campbell, DE, Miami

They could take a wideout. They could rebuild the offensive line. They definitely need some help on defense. Maybe they could steal a quarterback to use after they kick Alex Smith to the curb. Really have no idea what San Fran is thinking.

30. Green Bay Packers - Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech

This would be a steal for the Pack, who do have some depth issues in the secondary.

31. New England Patriots - This pick is forfeit.

Cheaters never win. Unless you count those three Super Bowl rings.

32. New York Giants - Kenny Philips, S, Miami

Enjoy the trophy now. Because if the G-Men don't retool the secondary they won't make the playoffs this season.
