Ranking the Breeders' Cup Favorites by T.O. Whenham - 10/24/2007
The morning line odds are set for the Breeders' Cup. All that's left to do is to handicap and to wait. It's the waiting that's killing me, so I keep coming up with different ways to look at the fields to try and find that extra edge. One of those ways of looking at the horses has been to assess the relative value of the favorites. We will see eight favorites in eight races on Saturday. Traditionally, about a third of favorites win. That means that five or six of the post time favorites will lose. In a perfect world we would bet on the Breeders' Cup favorites that win, and ignore the ones that won't. If only it were that easy.

Breeders' Cup Turf Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/24/2007
The Breeders' Cup Turf makes me tired just thinking about it. It's such a long race (a mile and a half), and the turf itself can be so grueling and challenging that it is truly an endurance test of the highest order. The horses that are pointed to this event, though, are cut out specifically for the unique challenges of the event. Given the difficulty of the event, it's not surprising that the field will not be full this year. As it looks now, only nine horses will enter the starting gate. What the race lacks in quantity, though, it more than makes up for in quality.

Breeders' Cup Mile Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/24/2007
In many years the Mile is the least interesting race to most North American bettors. It's a distance and a surface that we aren't as familiar with or fond of as others, and many of the top runners are Europeans that we don't know and whose past performances we can't read. This year, though, the race is different. The field is interesting and full of Americans, and the race provides one of the most intriguing and challenging puzzles on the card.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/24/2007
The Juvenile Fillies is the first race on the main Breeders' Cup card this year, and it has been the most formful over the last five years - the highest priced winner over that span was Dreaming of Anna last year at 5/2. Because of that it is a good race to get an ego boost and get off to a winning start to the day. It's also likely to have one of the lowest priced favorites of the day, so chalk eaters will be happy.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf - Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/24/2007
The Filly and Mare Turf was only added to the Breeders' Cup nine years ago, but it has quickly established itself as an intriguing and challenging event. This year will be no exception. We have two incredibly hyped horses - Nashoba's Key and Wait a While - taking on 10 challengers. The race this year, at 1 3/8 miles, will challenge the horses around three turns, and it could get tight. The ability to handle that setup has to figure prominently into the handicapping of this race.

Four Keys to Breeders' Cup Handicapping by T.O. Whenham - 10/24/2007
The Breeders' Cup is just a few days away and I can hardly contain myself. The excitement levels for Saturday could only be higher for me if Michigan were playing Ohio State instead of Minnesota on the same day. In the process of writing thousands of words and reading millions in preparation for racing's biggest weekend, there have been a few thoughts, tips and ideas that have jumped out at me but haven't fit anywhere else. I'll throw them all down here in hopes that they are useful as you are getting ready to make your bets and win big:

Analysis of Friday's Breeders' Cup Races by T.O. Whenham - 10/24/2007
In an effort to increase the profile of the Breeders' Cup, and to allow more top horses to participate, the event has been extended to two days, and three new races have been added. Though the new events, which will be run Friday, are ungraded this year because they are new, they will all eventually be grade one stakes like the other eight races.

Quite a Few Breeders' Cup Races Wide Open by Greg Melikov - 10/24/2007
This may be the most competitive bunch of Breeders' Cup races since the Olympics of Horse Racing was launched in 1984 at Hollywood Park.

Breeders' Cup Sprint Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/19/2007
The Breeders' Cup Sprint is the race that longshot fans look forward to most. The short distance makes it possible for anything to happen, and as often as not that seems to mean that a horse that few people are paying attention to reaches the finish line first. That makes it hard to pick a winner, but well worth the effort if you pull it off - the winner has paid at least 12/1 three times in the last four years.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/18/2007
The Breeders' Cup Juvenile is often one of the harder races on the card to pick, but this year it's just a mess. It's not that there haven't been any eye-opening performances. There have been a ton. It's just that no horse seems capable so far of stringing two or more in a row. It seems that every time a horse moves to the front of the division we get excited, only to see him dominated by another horse in impressive fashion next time out. There is no clear stand out, and a case can be made for much of the field. The only thing we know for sure at this point is that the field is strong and the race should be great.

Breeders' Cup Distaff Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/18/2007
This year's Distaff will stick out in the minds of racing fans as the race that Rags to Riches should have won. The Belmont champ was hurt this summer, though, so we will have to wait until next year and hope that she returns to top form. In her absence a full field of fillies and mares are entered to race a mile and an eighth for $2 million. In what seems to be a common thread among this year's Breeders' Cup races, the Distaff is deep and full of impressive horses, but none jump out at you as a clear favorite. That means we may actually have to do some handicapping.

Breeders' Cup Classic Field and Analysis by T.O. Whenham - 10/18/2007
The 2007 Breeders' Cup Classic has a very good chance of being, well, a classic. It's going to be a very small field in Breeders' Cup terms - only nine horses have been entered, and one of them would prefer to run in the Mile. That certainly doesn't make it any easier to find a winner, though. Unlike most years there is not a single horse in this field that you can toss out with confidence. Here's a look at the Breeders' Cup Classic field as it stands after pre-entries have been announced and analysis has been included.

Pick Four Offers Huge Payouts at Breeders' Cup by T.O. Whenham - 10/11/2007
If you are planning to bet on the Breeders' Cup on Oct. 27 (and if you aren't, why the heck not?), and you have a reasonably deep bankroll, then you should probably be taking a look at the two Pick Fours that will be offered. The Pick Four is always an intriguing bet because it is reasonably winnable, quite affordable to play, and the risk-to-reward ratio is often excellent. On Breeders' Cup day, though, the bet holds an extra special appeal. Both bets have a guaranteed pool of $2 million. That means that there will be a pile of money directed towards the bets, and much of it won't be particularly intelligent money.

Here's Some Insight on Monmouth's Grass Course by Greg Melikov - 10/09/2007
The year-old grass course at Monmouth Park might make it difficult to handicap the four turf races over the two-day Breeders' Cup spectacular starting Oct. 26.

Kentucky Derby Alumni at the Breeders' Cup by T.O. Whenham - 10/04/2007
For the first time in a long time, the horses that we got to know in May are going to be a serious factor in the Breeders' Cup Classic. The last couple of years we have seen horses run in both the spring classic and the fall one, but not as a legitimate threat. In 2005, Flower Alley and Sun King were the two that did double duty. Flower Alley was second to Saint Liam in the Classic, but at 10/1 to he was not among the elite contenders. Sun King was an also-ran at 30/1. 2006 also saw two dual-runners - Brother Derek and Lawyer Ron. Neither horse was a factor before or during the race. Brother Derek was fifth at 22/1, while Lawyer Ron, who had just moved to the Todd Pletcher stable, was ninth at 20/1.

Breeders' Cup Betting by T.O. Whenham - 10/02/2007
The 2007 Breeders' Cup at Monmouth Park in New Jersey is less than a month away. For the first time ever the Championship has been extended to two days, Oct. 26 and 27. Three new races have been added on the Friday, and the familiar lineup of eight races will be run on Saturday. For horse players these two days are the best there are. The Kentucky Derby has a higher profile, but that's full of 20 immature horses facing chaos for the first time, while each Breeders' Cup race features the best horses seasoned by a long, tough year of racing. The betting pools are gigantic, the fields are deep, and the chances for a huge payoff are there every time the gates open and the bell sounds. I'm getting giddy just writing about it and am looking forward to two days of Breeders' Cup betting.

Expect a Fast Track at Breeders' Cup by Greg Melikov - 10/02/2007
Since the 24th World Thoroughbred Championship Breeders' Cup is being staged for the first time at Monmouth Park, I decided to seek expert advice on what to expect at the track by the Jersey shore that ran this year's meeting from May 12 through Sept. 2.

Betting Trends for the Breeders' Cup by T.O. Whenham - 09/28/2007
The Breeders' Cup is just around the corner. To get ready to take the money home this year we need to be sure that we are as prepared as we can be. One way to do that, at least before the fields are set and we can do some real handicapping, is to look back on recent history. By understanding what has happened in the recent past we can have a better idea of what works, what doesn't, and where we should be spending our efforts and directing our focus. Here are five recent trends that will help you make the best of your bankroll on thoroughbred racing's second biggest day:

What to Avoid at the Breeders' Cup by T.O. Whenham - 09/28/2007
For many people, the Breeders' Cup is one of just a handful of days that they spend handicapping the ponies every year. Though it totally makes sense that the more casual racing fans would be drawn to such a huge day of racing, it's a tough day to choose to jump into the fray in many ways. The fields are huge, the horses are mostly outstanding, they come from all over the world, and some are well rested while others are exhausted at the end of a long season. With so many factors at play, choosing a winner on the big day is much harder than it is on a typical day at your local track.

Breeders' Cup 2007 Contenders: Ten Horses to Watch by T.O. Whenham - 09/21/2007
If you are like most sports bettors, you may be drawn to the big horse racing events like the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders' Cup because of the pageantry, the tradition and the massive potential payouts, but you probably don't closely follow horse racing from day to day. With the Breeders' Cup just around the corner, though, it's time to start paying attention to who the top horses are out there, and who is going to be ready to run. Here's a look at 10 of the biggest names coming into the richest of racing days.

Breeders' Cup Racing Primer by T.O. Whenham - 09/21/2007
We are less than six weeks away from the Breeders' Cup and I, for one, am so excited I can hardly take it. Next to the Kentucky Derby, and the Belmont if there is a Triple Crown on the line, this is the biggest and best day of horse racing of the year. For serious fans of the sport the event offers so much that the risk of overload is high. It's the equivalent of the Super Bowl, World Series, Stanley Cup and NBA Finals all playing out on the same day. The very best horses in the world are aimed at this event, they are at their peak, and we get to see who the best is on the day. Perfect.
