Free Online Baseball Handicapping Notes - By Doc's Sports

Philadelphia at Los Angeles (August 6,7,8)
The Dodgers are look to avenge a three game sweep against Philadelphia in May. L.A. was playing the worst baseball it had played all season and since then have become a completely different team. Over the last month they have won 24 of their last 30 games. The early indications are that the Paul Lo Duca-Brad Penney trade has paid dividends for the Dodgers, as they have not lost since making the deal.
The Phillies are in the midst of their longest road trip of the season. They are coming of a three game sweep of the Padres, yet are still under .500 on the trip (4-6). They have been giving their starters big leads, yet it always seems to be a struggle to hold onto them. Last series, the Padres had numerous chances to take the lead late in games, yet failed to do so on every occasion. Over the last 10 games, the Phillies pitching staff posses an E.R.A. of 7.00.
L.A. starters have regained their form from last year's domination and over their last ten games played have an E.R.A. under four runs a game. The gap is even greater when comparing bullpens. One is good and one is average. The Dodgers pen has an E.R.A. of 2.93, where as the Phillies pen has an E.R.A. over 4.
We expect a sweep by the Dodgers and fell we will be offered some good lines in the process. Philadelphia is just playing out the season and barring a long winning streak will be nowhere to be found once the playoffs start. Play the Dodgers with confidence.
St. Louis at Florida (August 10,11,12)
The Marlins have been fading out of the playoff picture since June. During this time they are (16-25) and have reworked their team via the trade in hopes of returning back to the playoffs. This tells us that they have a lot of problems and this should be a team to stay away from.
On the other hand the Cardinals keep plugging along and have all but sewed up the division. They are 14-5 since the All-Star break and are by far and away the best road team in baseball with a 36-14 record. This goes nicely with the best overall record at 69-38. They have all the characteristics of a winning team in great defense, power in the middle, and clutch hitting. They are definitely a force to be reckoned with.
When comparing these teams' bullpens, the Cardinals are far superior with an E.R.A. under 3.00. La Russa is a magician at micro managing the game and play the match-ups to a T, and usually comes out of it on top. The only probably is that all his pitching changes stretch the game out to four hours and drive everyone watching the game insane.
St. Louis will take advantage of an overworked bullpen and win all three games in this series. It does not matter who the fish throw out there, the Cards will hit him and hit him hard. Play you Cards right!
