NBA Betting Trends: Hot and Cold Teams Against the Point Spread
by Aaron Smith - 1/24/2011

Share |

Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay (22).

The NBA hot and cold report is designed to help you stay ahead of the NBA betting landscape. This is definitely a league where teams heat up and cool down on a regular basis, which allows you to profit nicely if you are ahead of the curve. Please note that the statistics used in this report are from games played between Jan. 10 and Jan. 23.

Top Five “Hot” ATS NBA Teams

-Golden State Warriors (5-1 ATS) The Warriors are 24-18-1 ATS for the entire season. They went on a bad stretch when David Lee was injured, but when this team has been healthy they have covered the spread on a consistent basis. Their next five games are all at home, where they are 12-8 ATS this year.

-Memphis Grizzlies (5-1 ATS) This is the Grizzlies second straight appearance on the hot list. They are now 27-16-1 ATS on the season. This is a mediocre team that the oddsmakers continue to line as if they are terrible. Memphis is in the middle of a four-game road trip right now, but they are 15-9 ATS away from home.

-Phoenix Suns (5-2 ATS) The Suns were slow to get going after the major December trade, but they appear to have things turned in the right direction now. The Suns blew a 15-point lead with nine minutes left against Detroit in their last game, so it will be interesting to see how the team responds.

-New Orleans Hornets (5-2 ATS) The Hornets are heating up again, and they have been beating some of the top teams in the league. The Spurs, Hawks, and Magic were all beaten by the Hornets in the last two weeks. New Orleans is doing this with some amazing defense. The Hornets are allowing just 91 points per game.

-Denver Nuggets (5-2 ATS) Are the Nuggets putting the distractions to the side or are they just benefiting from favorable scheduling? Based on the numbers, I believe it is the former. All five of the games they covered during this period were at home. The next five games for the Nuggets are on the road, and they are just 6-11-1 ATS on the road this year.

Bottom Five “Cold” ATS NBA Teams

-Dallas Mavericks (1-6 ATS) Dirk Nowitzki is finally back in the lineup, but he still doesn’t look healthy. The Mavericks offense has been atrocious of late. Dallas averaged just 87 points per game during the last two weeks. Dallas has a favorable schedule coming up, so they need to get back on track.

-Utah Jazz (1-5 ATS) Jerry Sloan’s team makes their second straight appearance on the cold list. They have lost four straight games, and three of those contests were against teams with a losing record. The schedule gets tougher now as they face the Lakers and the Spurs on a back-to-back this week.

-Cleveland Cavaliers (1-5 ATS) It should come as no surprise to see the Cavaliers on this side of the report once again. Cleveland is the worst team in the NBA right now, and the books just can’t seem to figure out how low to value this team. During this six-game stretch they lost by an average of 23.3 points per game!

-Minnesota Timberwolves (1-4 ATS) The Timberwolves can put up some points, but their horrible defense is just too much to overcome most of the time. Minnesota is giving up 108.4 points per game this year. Opponents are shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc against the Timberwolves. Four of their next five games are on their home floor.

-Washington Wizards (2-5 ATS) The Wizards are an extremely inconsistent team right now. It’s been well-documented that the Wizards are still winless on the road. Washington is only 5-15 ATS on the road this year. Unfortunately, four of their next five contests are away from home.
