2026 March Madness Betting for Dummies and Novice Bettors

The most exhilarating month of sports is on the horizon, as the NBA and NHL regular seasons wrap up, Opening Day is nearly here for MLB, and The Masters plus UFC 327 are also scheduled soon. Oh yeah, there is also March Madness, the greatest tournament in sports.
Doc’s Sports offers college basketball expert picks for every game on our NCAA basketball predictions page.
March Madness bracket pandemonium was one of the first mainstream ways to make bets on sports, as casual fans and seasoned experts alike can potentially craft a winning bracket. Once you add in Warren Buffett's $1 billion reward for a perfect bracket, which has never been done, it is no surprise that March Madness is one of the most popular tournaments of the year. While it is easy to get distracted by the bracket tournaments and seismic cash prizes, the reality is that a March Madness bracket is simply 63 individual game predictions you will hopefully be able to string together.
There will be an endless stream of prop bets, futures, single-game lines, and much more available this month, and it is important to recognize what exactly you are taking before putting down hard-earned cash. There is no need to stress about free-to-play lottery-style contests, but once you start staking a single dollar, you must know what you are getting into. While you won’t be on ESPN anytime soon, this March Madness for Dummies breakdown will give you the best chance at coming out on top of what promises to be a hectic tournament.
Types of Wagers:
Moneylines
A moneyline is the fancy way of saying who will win the game. Unlike point spreads or totals, the moneyline odds will almost always favor one side with odds shorter than -110. This team is called the favorite. In other sports, the moneyline odds favor one side but are almost always relatively close, with -1000 being an extreme mismatch. However, the wide-open nature of March Madness means there will sometimes be -10000 or even -100000 moneylines. While it may seem like ‘free money’ to take these big favorites, March Madness is known for its upsets, and you should never, under any circumstances, play a moneyline like that.
Point Spreads:
If you are looking to take a big favorite, the point spread is the way to go over the moneyline. This is the staple of sports betting, as it allows any matchup to be adjusted to -110 odds on both sides. Take #1 Duke and #16 Siena as an example. Duke is a -29.5 point favorite with -110 odds. This means there is a roughly a 50% chance that Duke wins by 30 or more points and a 50% chance that Duke wins by 29 or fewer points, or Siena wins by any number. This allows you to secure reasonable odds if you think Duke secures a big win, or you can still find a way to win with an underdog that won’t pull off the upset but will exceed expectations by keeping the game close.
Totals or Over/Unders:
The total is the number of points expected to be scored by both teams in the game. In March, these lines are usually between 130 and 170 points. If the closing total is 149.5, that means there is a 50% chance of a combined 150 points or more scored and a 50% chance of the combined score staying under 149.5.
Futures:
While betting on single games is always fun, the real bread and butter of March Madness is the futures. You can take any team to win the championship, reach the finals, or reach any stage of the competition at wildly varying odds. If you think a double-digit seed is poised for a deep run, instead of taking them each time they play, you can go all-in on them to reach the Elite Eight or Final Four. Unlike in a sport with multi-game series, for a team to make a deep run, you are essentially parlaying their moneylines one after another until your desired stage of the tournament. Sometimes that can result in a bigger payout, but other times it is better to lock in a juicy pre-tournament price. For example, let’s take a look at the odds for one of the tournament favorites, Duke, and a #5 seed in Texas Tech.
Duke Odds:
To Win March Madness +370
To Reach the Final +170
To Reach Final Four -130
To Reach Elite Eight -250
To Reach Sweet Sixteen -700
To Reach Round of 32 -50000
Texas Tech Odds:
To Win March Madness +15000
To Reach the Final +7000
To Reach Final Four +2500
To Reach Elite Eight +1000
To Reach Sweet Sixteen +155
To Reach Round of 32 -300
Not only can you make these picks now, but all of these markets will stay live right up until they tip off. The more aggressive you are with your picks, the larger the potential reward will be. On Texas Tech, a first- and second-round win would get them into the Sweet Sixteen, meaning you are only two wins away from a +155 payout. You would have to take Duke to reach the Final for similar odds, emphasizing that one correct underdog pick can be all it takes for March Madness to be a profitable tournament.
Bankroll Management:
It doesn’t matter how many tips and tricks you know if you can’t efficiently manage your bankroll over the course of March Madness. There will be countless opportunities to double or triple dip into the same market, but be wary of putting all your eggs in one basket. Doc’s Sports uses a 1% unit system, with bets varying from 1 to 8 units. You should find a system that works for you and stick to it; otherwise, you run the risk of chasing losses.
