NBA Power Rankings
by Josh Nagel - 04/07/2008

With one of more entertaining NBA regular seasons in recent memory winding down - fueled by a race from start to finish for each playoff spot in the ultra competitive Western Conference - there are some milestones that already can be acknowledged. Others, however, will still have to wait. Although only a handful of games remain, the pecking order of the Western Conference is still up for grabs. In fact, you could make an argument for switching the order of teams No. 3 through No. 8 in the power rankings below -- in almost any combination -- and have a pretty good case.

With the way the NBA's Western Conference has been shaking out, you get the feeling that sometimes comes when you're watching a big boxing card on cable, and someone wonders aloud how all the fighters can have such impressive winning records. After all, doesn't somebody have to lose? That's what it's been like out west, during a season marked by several substantial winning streaks but still full of suspense as we head into the home stretch. One of those teams with such a streak, Portland, is out of playoff contention, while Houston's historic 22-game run merely seems to assure the Rockets a spot in the postseason.

With the NBA's regular season quickly winding down - and the ultra-long postseason in view - it's about that time of year to consider postseason accolades. While the MVP race seems to be down to Kobe Bryant of the Lakers or the Hornets' Chris Paul, there is one clear candidate for Coach of the Year who firmly has my vote.

This is shaping up to be one of more the intriguing NBA playoffs in recent memory. More than anything it's because so many teams have showed that they actually care about being there; the Lakers' acquisition of Pau Gasol triggered a firestorm of trading-deadline action, with Phoenix and Dallas making the somewhat risky moves in picking up Shaquille O'Neal and Jason Kidd, respectively, and even Cleveland throwing its hat into the stretch-run ring by revamping its lineup in hopes of fielding a more formidable squad come playoff time. There's also the curious factor that even though a .500 record will easily get an Eastern Conference team a playoff berth, the Western Conference is so tightly bunched that teams such as the Mavericks and Rockets are only a couple of games out of first place, and similarly just a few losses from falling out of contention.

As the All-Star break approaches, teams are making their moves, either buying or selling depending on their playoff position. The old saying states that "nothing in the world is free" but evidently the Grizzlies didn't get the memo. They simply handed one of the league's best big men to the Lakers, and the happy recipients suddenly become a lot more formidable in the west. There were more major moves this season than there have been in recent memory, with the capper of course being the Suns deal to bring Shaquille O'Neal to Phoenix in exchange for Shawn Marion.

NBA Power Rankings, Jan. 14-Jan. 27
by Josh Nagel - 01/28/2007

The NBA season started with some surprise contenders such as Orlando and Boston immediately making an impact and adding a new wave of needed respectability to the Eastern Conference. But lately it has been sleepers from the West such as the New Orleans Hornets and Los Angeles Lakers who have stepped up and shown the immense depth of the Western Conference. If the trend keeps up, the possibility exists for an entertaining and unexpected matchup in the NBA Finals. But don't count out familiar faces such as the Spurs or Pistons just yet. Here are the NBA power rankings through Jan. 27:

Some of the early-season surprises such as New Orleans and the Los Angeles Lakers have proven that their fast starts were no fluke, while the same can't be said for the young Orlando Magic. The Celtics continue to be the best team in the league thus far, though others have closed the gap. Namely, their Eastern Conference rivals, the Detroit Pistons. It's been a while since two teams form the East were considered the league's elite, and that's probably a good thing. Here are the NBA power rankings through Jan. 13:

The Portland Trailblazers have inexplicably caught fire, Bulls coach Scott Skiles got fired and Isaiah Thomas somehow avoided being fired. For these reasons and more, the NBA has heated up over the frigid holiday season. Here are the NBA power rankings through Dec. 26:

The Celtics and the Magic finally have given the Eastern Conference some long-needed credibility. All it took was some major superstars heading east through trades and free-agency signings. Rashard Lewis made Orlando an instant contender, and the big three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce have brought Celtics fans the winning club they have longed for since the Larry Bird days of long ago. However, the Western Conference is still thriving, although the Spurs are without Tim Duncan because of injury and the Mavericks have slumped a bit. Here are the NBA power rankings through Dec. 10:

NBA Power Rankings, Nov. 13-Nov. 26
by Josh Nagel - 11/27/2007

With one month complete in the NBA season, teams are starting to settle in and offer an idea of how they will perform on a regular basis. The Celtics and Magic continue to add credibility to an Eastern Conference that sorely needed it. The Rockets have faded after a fast start, and the Bucks have made a respectable showing in the early going. Here are the NBA power rankings through Nov. 25:

NBA Power Rankings, Oct. 30-Nov. 13
by Josh Nagel - 11/13/2007

Through the first couple weeks of the NBA season there have been some pleasant surprises (Orlando, Houston), a few disappointments (Golden State, Chicago) and other teams that have delivered pretty much what we've come to expect (San Antonio, Phoenix). Here is an early look at the NBA power rankings thus far:
