NFL Office Pool Picks - Week 1
by T.O. Whenham - 09/03/2008

The NFL season is here. For pretty much everyone who works that means that it is time to play in your NFL office pool. Many of you will have your own opinions about how to win and who to pick. If you don't, though, then I'm here to help. Each week of the season I will be providing my picks for each NFL game. A majority of pools seem to be straight up instead of against the spread, so that's how I'll pick them all. If you use my picks and win then you can decide whether you send my share in cash or by check.

Washington at New York - The Giants are at home, they likely don't feel like they are getting enough respect for being the champs, and with the obvious exception of a pass rush they have a decent team. Washington is bringing in a new system, and the preseason was a total mess for them. Take the Giants.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans - The Saints will likely be a bit distracted because of the weather mess in New Orleans. That being said, they are going to be able to score this year. I like the Bucs, but I'm not sure they can keep up if this one becomes a shootout. Take the Saints.

St. Louis at Philadelphia - The Rams just have one problem, but it's a big one - they really aren't very good. Philadelphia is stronger at most key positions, and they are at home. The Eagles are an easy pick here.

N.Y. Jets at Miami - The toughest one yet. The Jets are entering the Brett Favre era, and they do it against their former QB. Miami has a new regime, a new offense, and new hope. The Jets are the favorites in this game, but I think that the Dolphins are a sound pick here. They won't be good this year, but this is a good spot for an emotional win. Pick the Dolphins.

Kansas City at New England - The big news here is that Tom Brady might be out of the game due to his foot injury. It doesn't matter, folks - this is Kansas City we are talking about. I'm at best an average athlete, but I think that I could stand up for the Pats against the Chiefs. Don't over think it - take the Patriots.

Houston at Pittsburgh - One day the Texans are going to be a good team. This is not that day. Pittsburgh is deeper, more experienced, more talented, and just plain better. Take the Steelers.

Cincinnati at Baltimore - This game is a mess. Cincinnati has big questions at receiver, and have perfected the art of underachieving in recent years. The Ravens have such serious QB woes that Joe Flacco has gone from third stringer to starter in two weeks, and not due to his play. That's too much to overcome. Take the Bengals.

Detroit at Atlanta - This is the start of a new era for the Falcons, but it won't be smooth. Matt Ryan now has to face real NFL defenses, and it could be rough. Detroit can score at a pace that the Falcons probably can't match. Take the Lions.

Seattle at Buffalo - If you can catch the ball and run reasonably fast then you could probably get a job in Seattle right now. They have real problems at receiver this week, and they face a team with high expectations. Seattle is the better team over the long run, but the Bills are the pick here.

Jacksonville at Tennessee - The excuses have run out for Vince Young, so this is the year he either has to make it or break it. This is not a good place for him to start on the path to success. Jacksonville is a good team, and they have a fallen teammate (Richard Collier was shot this week and is in critical condition) to rally around. Take the Jaguars.

Dallas at Cleveland - The expectations are pretty much out of control in Cleveland. They should be fine, but this isn't a good way to get things started. Dallas is loaded, and they have a lot to play for this year after being a disappointment two straight years. Take the Cowboys.

Carolina at San Diego - The Panthers have a chance to be a surprise this year. They have lots of talent and no one is paying much attention to them, so they are way under the radar. That being said, they are way over their heads here. San Diego should be the class of the AFC, and this is their chance to show it. Take the Chargers.

Arizona at San Francisco - This is just not a good game. San Francisco is starting a third-string quarterback while a former No. 1 pick is stuck on the bench. Arizona is a quarterback controversy just waiting to explode. Neither team is at their best, but at this point Arizona should be the better side. Take the Cardinals.

Chicago at Indianapolis - The Colts are opening a new stadium, and they are so, so much better than the Bears that it isn't funny. I don't care about how healthy Peyton Manning is for this one. The Colts are unquestionably and confidently the pick.

Minnesota at Green Bay - The Packers are the somewhat surprising favorites here. I'm not buying it. I think that Aaron Rodgers will eventually be a good player, but the pressure he faces here is massive. Minnesota is loaded, and the loss of Bryant McKinnie is being overblown. Tarvaris Jackson is a better QB than he gets credit for, too. Take the Vikings.

Denver at Oakland - This game has the real potential to be unwatchable, but the curiosity factor is high. It's the first chance we get to see JaMarcus Russell as the unquestioned No. 1 QB, and the first time we get to see Darren McFadden in the pros. That will be interesting, but right now Denver is the better team. Take the Broncos.
