Picking straight up winners in the NFL is harder to do when good teams play badly and bad teams play well. That happened a few times last week, and a lot of people likely saw their pools struggle as a result. Winners don't make excuses, though - they just keep trying to do better. With that in mind, then, here are the winners as I see them this week in the NFL.

Denver at Cleveland - There is a serious wild card here - Brady Quinn. He finally gets his chance to start and prove if he is worth all of the hype. It's not going to be smooth sailing for him, but this is a good place for him to get his start - the Broncos' defense is terrible. The game is a tossup in terms of talent and momentum, but Cleveland will get a boost because their hometown fans will be very excited about Quinn. Take the Browns.
New Orleans at Atlanta - The Falcons haven't lost at home yet, and they are looking solid. Still, I have to go with New Orleans. They are coming off their bye week that will allow them to be recharged and prepared. The offense is working well, and I'm not convinced that the Falcons can keep up if it becomes a shootout. Take the Saints.
Tennessee at Chicago - The Titans somehow keep finding ways to win, and I think they will do it again here. I would have more faith in the Bears, a surprisingly solid team, if Kyle Orton was at QB. He deserves a lot of the credit for the success of this team, but he's out of action. Take the Titans.
Jacksonville at Detroit - The Jaguars are the most frustrating, underachieving team in the league. They lost to the freaking Bengals last week. The saving grace for them is that they are playing the Lions - the worst team in the league by a long shot. Detroit will either be throwing out a lousy QB or one who doesn't know the playbook. Either way, things won't go well. Take the Jaguars.
Seattle at Miami - Nothing is going well for the Seahawks this year. They will be without Matt Hasselbeck again, and they have to travel to the Eastern Time Zone - a place that has not been kind to them. Miami is playing very well, and that streak should continue here. Take the Dolphins.
Green Bay at Minnesota - This is more than just a rivalry game. It's also a huge game for the standings in the uninspiring NFC North. Both teams have their struggles, and neither have been particularly consistent. The game is a coin toss, but in the end the edge goes to the home team. Take the Vikings.
Buffalo at New England - The Bills started out playing great football, but that first month of the season seems like it was a long time ago now. They have struggled mightily now, and they have struggled against their division. New England is a great home team, and despite coming off a loss they are the better team right now. Take the Patriots.
St. Louis at N.Y. Jets - Brett Favre has not looked great this year, but somehow the team still keeps finding ways to win. The Rams had a nice bounce when they made their coaching change, but they have come back to earth. New York is the better team and they are at home. Take the Jets.
Baltimore at Houston - The Ravens are quietly playing some very good football. They have won three in a row, and two of those wins have been on the road. Houston has won three of four, too, so they have corrected a lot of their earlier problems. This is a bit of a coin flip, but I have to go for the home team - especially when that home team has Andre Johnson. Take the Texans.
Carolina at Oakland - This is one of the easier ones on the week. With the exception of one terrible game the Panthers have been one of the better teams in the league. The Raiders had 77 yards of total offense last week. This game won't even be close. Take the Panthers.
Indianapolis at Pittsburgh - Byron Leftwich was impressive in relief of Ben Roethlisberger last week. It isn't confirmed, but he will likely get the start here. The Colts are playing better recently, but the Steelers play very tough defense, and they will give the Colts problems. Home field will be a big advantage here as well. Take the Steelers.

Kansas City at San Diego - There are few things less appealing right now than trusting the Chargers. They are playing badly and they don't seem to care. Still, they are at home and they are playing the Chiefs, a flawed team if there ever was one. Take the Chargers.
New York Giants at Philadelphia - The Eagles have been inconsistent and frustrating. The Giants, somehow, are the best team in the league. I don't know how they are doing it, and I don't know if they can keep doing it, but they are the better team here, and that makes them worth a pick. Take the Giants.
San Francisco at Arizona - This is quite likely going to be the worst Monday Night Football game we have seen so far this year. The Niners are struggling badly, and new coach Mike Singletary seems to be losing his mind. Arizona is playing well thanks to the ageless Kurt Warner. This one shouldn't be close. Take the Cardinals.
