NFL Office Pool Picks - Week 3
by T.O. Whenham - 09/18/2008

The only truly predictable thing about the first two weeks of the NFL season is that they are unpredictable. We've done okay up to this point, but let's see if we can crank it up a bit from now on. Remember, these picks are for your straight up office pool, not one against the spread:

Kansas City at Atlanta - The Falcons have problems that will keep them from prime time for a while. Unfortunately, the Chiefs are so bad that they have a total inability to exploit any of those problems. Matt Ryan and Michael Turner could be able to look like Superman and Captain America - just like they did against a weak opponent in Week 1. Take the Falcons.

Arizona at Washington - The Cardinals have scored points and looked good, but they have yet to really play anyone. I find it hard to believe in Washington, but they were at home, and their comeback against New Orleans was impressive. Given the location of the game, take the Redskins.

Houston at Tennessee - The Titans, I have to admit, are a better team than I thought they were going to be coming into the season. I had no faith in Vince Young, but he is out of the picture and shouldn't be much of a distraction now that Kerry Collins is established and has a win. Houston will be rested after their unexpected break, but that mess will have messed with their routines. They are a fragile team anyway, so that's another edge for the Titans. Take Tennessee.

Oakland at Buffalo - The Bills have perhaps lived up to the highest part of their potential more than any other team in the league. The Raiders, quite simply, haven't. Oakland has a huge distraction with the Lane Kiffin situation, and they don't typically travel well at the best of times. Take the Bills.

Tampa Bay at Chicago - This one could be a defensive clinic - in part because the teams both have stout defenses, and in part because I have an absolute distrust of either quarterback. In the end, Brian Griese has experience practicing against the Chicago defense, and that and his superior experience versus Kyle Orton is enough for me to suggest taking the Bucs.

Carolina at Minnesota - This is a tough one. The Panthers will get a boost because their best player, Steve Smith, returns from suspension. The Vikings get a boost because they finally have a QB who doesn't suck as much as Tarvaris Jackson has this year. The Panthers are slightly beyond expectations, and the Vikes are well below. I like Carolina, but I can't imagine Minnesota at 0-3. Take the Vikings.

Cincinnati at N.Y. Giants - Marvin Lewis should be brought up on criminal charges for wasting so much offensive talent in Cincinnati. He is, in my mind, the worst coach in professional football. It isn't even close. He hasn't had his team prepared yet, and he won't have them ready for a Giants team that has a ferocious pass rush despite having lost their two top pass rushers. Take the Giants and feel good about it.

Miami at New England - I thought that the concerns about Matt Cassel were largely crap last week, and I think so again this week. Cassel will avoid big mistakes, and the Pats have a skill advantage at pretty much every position on the field. The Patriots will win.

New Orleans at Denver - I'm surprised about something on each team. I am surprised that the Saints still haven't managed to find a defense after not having one for a couple of years now and losing far more than they should because of it. I am even more surprised that the Broncos not only are 2-0, but they look like a solid 2-0 after playing good teams and showing real character. This one could be a shootout, but only one team has the ability to stop an offense when it matters. Take the Broncos.

Detroit at San Francisco - The Lions have so much faith in their running game that they had every free agent with a pulse in town this week for an interview. San Francisco is far from great, but they are much better than they are given credit for. The Niners will rise up and beat a broken franchise here. Take San Francisco.

St. Louis at Seattle - The worst team in football travels to play the one with the worst luck. Seattle has not looked even remotely good so far, but there is no better remedy to poor play than hosting the Rams. Take the Seahawks, then watch the Rams continue on their pitiful path to total self-destruction.

Cleveland at Baltimore - This is the closest game of the week in my mind. Cleveland has been terrible, but they are more skilled than they have displayed, and pride has to kick in sooner or later. Baltimore looked decent in Week 1, but they are coming off the confusing and likely frustrating forced break in Houston, and they still have a raw rookie under center. Take Cleveland.

Pittsburgh at Philadelphia - The battle of Pennsylvania features two teams that have looked very solid this year. One is due for a letdown coming off a tough loss in the best game of the year in Dallas, but the other doesn't have a healthy QB. In the end I'll trust the healthy quarterback and take the Eagles.

Jacksonville at Indianapolis - Coming into the season I had this game circled as a potential classic. After two games I don't even think I will bother to watch it. Indianapolis has been lethargic and confused for all but 12 minutes of their season, and now they have to play without Bob Sanders, the spark plug of their defense. Jacksonville, through bad luck and bad planning, has the worst offensive line I have seen in a while on a potential contender. I don't like where either team is at right now, so I will default with the home team. Take the Colts.

Dallas at Green Bay - Aaron Rodgers has far exceeded my expectations. I am man enough to admit that. I'm not going to learn from it, though - I'll still pick against him. He hasn't seen a defense anything close to what Dallas has, and the Packers haven't faced an offense like the Cowboys. Green Bay will make a game of it, but Dallas is just too good. Take the Cowboys.

N.Y. Jets at San Diego - I have absolutely no sympathy for the Chargers. They have suffered tough late losses, and they got a bum deal from the officials last game, but they are so much more talented than either of the teams they have played that they never should have been in a position to lose it late in the first place. The Chargers need to get their act together and quit feeling sorry for themselves, and at home against an underwelming Jets team is a good place to start. Take San Diego.
