NFL Office Pool Picks - Week 7
by T.O. Whenham - 10/16/2008

I'm back for another week of straight up picks for all you office pool participants out there. Before we get to that, though, let's pause for a quick prayer. Repeat after me - Dear (higher power you believe in), please give us one week in the NFL that makes sense. This season is crazy, but we've been good and we deserve a week that actually makes sense. Pretty please. Now on with the picks:

San Diego at Buffalo - I like the Bills a lot, and I think they are a playoff team. I just think that the Chargers were woken up last week. When both teams are at their best, San Diego wins this game. I am a bit concerned by the travel for San Diego, but I have to go with the better team here. Take the Chargers.

New Orleans at Carolina - The Panthers are coming off the worst game they have played in a couple of years. They are a better team than that, and they are well enough coached to handle the adversity badly and bounce back well. The Saints are flying high offensively, but their 3-3 record shows they have faults. Take the Panthers.

Minnesota at Chicago - The Vikings win last week over Detroit was as ugly as a win can possibly be. Chicago has faced some challenges, but they are a more cohesive, balanced team, they have a more effective quarterback, and they are at home. Take the Bears.

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati - I refuse to believe in this Bengals team until they get their act together and play up to even a fraction of their potential. I don't think it will happen against a Pittsburgh team that is tougher, hungrier, way better coached, and just plain better. Take Pittsburgh.

Tennessee at Kansas City - If, before the season, I had said that the Titans would be the last undefeated team I would have been put somewhere with rubber walls. They are, though, and I really can't see how they won't continue to be after playing the pathetic Chiefs. Take the Titans.

Baltimore at Miami - Both of these teams have had their highs and their lows this year. The Dolphins have an edge here, though. They have better quarterbacking, they have all sorts of offensive creativity that may be able to exploit the aging Baltimore defense, and they are at home. Take the Dolphins.

San Francisco at New York Giants - I would hope that few teams have ever been as embarrassed as the Giants are after getting blown out by the Browns. Some obvious issues were in that game, but I still think that this is a solid team, and I count on them bouncing back with a vengeance. Take the Giants.

Dallas at St. Louis - The Cowboys are in shambles. In one day this week they lost four starters - Tony Romo, Felix Jones, Pacman Jones, and punter Mat McBriar. That's a lot of holes to fill. Even with all of that going on, though, they are still a significantly better than St. Louis. Don't over think this one - take the Cowboys.

Detroit at Houston - Both of these teams have lousy records. Both have had some bad luck along the way. The difference is that Houston has shown signs of life along the way, while the Lions are just brutal. Their morale will be low now that Roy Williams, their best player, has been shipped to Dallas. Take Houston.

Indianapolis at Green Bay - After a strong start, Aaron Rodgers is looking like the virtual rookie that he is. He's not playing badly, but he's not helping his team play beyond itself, either. Indianapolis is coming of their offensive awakening last week, and could finally be back in form. Take the Colts.

New York Jets at Oakland - JaMarcus Russell may one day turn into a star, though I have my doubts. Right now, though, he is incredibly bad. The Jets are playing well, and they know that a win here puts them in good shape in their division. Brett Favre knows how to score, and Oakland can't answer. Take the Jets.

Cleveland at Washington - This is a very interesting game. Cleveland is coming off an impossibly good performance. The Redskins were so bad that they managed to lose to the Rams. Now we have to figure out what that all means. My guess is that Cleveland will play better than they did at the start of the year, and Washington will be angry and back in form. That gives the edge to the home team. Take the Redskins.

Seattle at Tampa Bay - It's hard to believe how bad the Seahawks have been this year. They have had lots of injury problems, but I think that their issues go much deeper than that. This is a sick team, and now they have to face a good team with a hot QB in Jeff Garcia who will continue to take advantage of a second chance. Take the Bucs.

Denver at New England - One team can play offense as well as anyone, but is totally incapable of playing defense. The other is solid on defense, but can't score. Defense may win championships, but in this one I think the Broncos will score, and I don't think the Pats can answer. I don't trust either team, but take the Broncos.
