NFL Week 4 Betting Props: The Showdown Between Vick vs. McNabb
by Richard Gardner | Bodog Sportsbook Manager - 10/1/2010
It’s the big match-up everyone’s been talking about heading into Week 4 of the NFL season: Eagles-Redskins. Or, more like Michael Vick-Donovan McNabb.
Bodog’s online sportsbook has posted a bevy of props related to the showdown in Philly. Most of them, you won’t be surprised to hear, have to do with the two quarterbacks. Both players make for compelling stories – McNabb’s return to the City of Brotherly Love, Vick’s ongoing quest for redemption – so we expect bettor interest to be high on these props.
We’ve pitted McNabb and Vick against each other in a battle for most passing yards, most rushing yards, most touchdowns, and for the highest completion percentage.
To touch on one of those props for a moment, it really shows how productive Vick’s been through the air in his first three games that he’s favored (-140) to throw for more yards than McNabb (+110), who’s been by far the more prolific passer of the two over their careers. Vick has been great so far, I’m not denying that, but let’s not forget that McNabb threw for 426 yards in Week 2 against Houston. He might offer some value at +110.
Just for fun, we’ve even posted a prop on how many times Philadelphia back-up Kevin Kolb will be shown on the sidelines. The over/under has been set at 3.5, with the action fairly evenly split so far.
A similar prop has been made for how many times McNabb’s parents will be shown, with the total set at 1.5.
As for the point spread, the hometown Eagles are 6-point favorites against the Redskins, who are coming off a bad road loss in St. Louis. Most of the bettors have been backing the Eagles, although a few sharps have come in with wagers on Washington, a team you have to think will be pretty motivated to play well.
Moving on, who do you think will be the last winless team in the NFL? The favorite at Bodog is Carolina, at +175. The Panthers are in New Orleans this week, they host the Bears next week and then they’ve got a bye, so their first legitimate shot at a victory might not come until Week 7, when they welcome the 49ers to town.
The 49ers, another winless team, are the least likely to be the last winless team, according to the oddsmakers. San Francisco is in Atlanta this week, then it returns home to face the Eagles and Raiders in Week 5 and Week 6, respectively.
Who will be the last undefeated team? There are only three options: Chicago (+375), Kansas City (+150), and Pittsburgh (EVEN). And if you predicted any of those three teams would be undefeated after Week 3, you’re either a genius or you’re lying.
