Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 11/27/2024
As we approach the end of the second month of the season, there are some great trends to dive into. The Bruins have moved on from another former Jack Adams winner, as they have fired Jim Montgomery. The Capitals, Maple Leafs, and Devils all continue to play at a high level this season, while the Bruins and Senators are reeling from the effects of splitting up the bear-hug duo of Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark. Let’s dive into the league trends over the last 10 games.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
Anaheim Ducks 7-3
Though the season is off to a rough start overall, the Ducks have some light shining on them through their performance against the spread over the last 10 games. The Ducks have covered seven of their last 10 games and have covered in seven straight contests. Their success ATS can be attributed to the goaltending performances by the veteran John Gibson. Gibson has covered the spread in each of his last four starts and is 3-1 overall while allowing just 2.75 GA/G. The Ducks have averaged 3.29 GF/G over their last seven games which is an uptick in offensive production compared to their season long mark of just 2.50 GF/G. Overall, the Ducks are 14-6 ATS on the season which is the second-best mark in the league behind the Washington Capitals.
Washington Capitals 7-3
It is no surprise to see the Capitals back on this list. They are 6-3-1 overall over this 10-game stretch and have covered seven of those contests. The offense continues to dominate through the first quarter of the season as the Caps lead the league in scoring with 4.05 GF/G. The team also ranks in the Top 10 in GA/G with a 2.67 GA/G mark. Losing Alex Ovechkin for an extended period of time hurts the offensive production of this team, but Dylan Strome and Connor McMichael have both been playing at a high level this season. Strome ranks 10th in the league in points with 29 and his 23 assists are the third most in the NHL. It is worth noting that through the three games without Ovechkin, the Capitals have scored just seven goals which is a 2.33 GF/G mark, which is significantly lower than their season average, so it remains to be seen just how critical his absence will be. Overall, the Capitals lead the league in covers as they have covered in 15 of their first 21 games this season.
Cold
Boston Bruins 0-10
Things have been absolutely abysmal in Boston this season. They fired Jim Montgomery, they are not currently in the playoff picture, and they have not covered the spread in their last 10 games. The Bruins are last in the league in scoring as they are averaging just 2.22 GF/G while they also rank last in PP% as they are cashing in on just 12.4% of their power play opportunities. To make matters worse they also rank in the bottom half of the league in PK% and GA/G. Not a great recipe for winning. Outside of David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand, there is no offense to be found on this team. Overall, the Bruins are the worst team in the NHL ATS as they have covered in just five of their 23 games this season.
Ottawa Senators 2-8
The Senators are another team struggling to stay in games at the moment. During their last 10 games, their only covers came against the ailing Boston Bruins in an overtime victory and against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 3-0 road win. After the victory against Toronto, the Senators have failed to cover in six consecutive games. Linus Ullmark has yet to be the game and even franchise changer that the Ottawa faithful were hoping for as he is allowing 3.10 GA/G on a lowly .881 SV%. His GA/G is the highest since the 2018/19 season when he was with Buffalo and the .881 SV% a career worst for Ullmark. The Senators are just 5-7 ATS when Ullmark is in the crease and just 1-4 over his last five starts. Overall, the Senators have covered just nine of their 21 games this season, which is a lowly 42.8%.
Money Line
Hot
New Jersey Devils 8-2
November has been kind to the New Jersey Devils who are 8-3 since the turn of the month and 8-2 over their last 10 games. Though the three losses in November were shutouts, which can be concerning, when the offense is on the Devils are scary. In the eight games that the Devils were not shutout, the team averaged 4.25 GF/G. The Devils now find themselves atop the Metro Division standings as they have 32 points through their first 24 games of the season, giving them a one-point lead over the Carolina Hurricanes. Their +22-goal differential is the fourth highest in the league while their 84 goals scored is also the fourth most in the NHL. The quartet of Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, and Stefan Noesen has been incredible as the four account for 44.2% of the team’s offense so far this season. Bratt’s 28 points and 18 assists lead the team while Hischier’s 13 goals lead the team.
Toronto Maple Leafs 7-3
The Maple Leafs are right there with the Devils, as they have won their last four games and seven of their last eight. They now have a three-point lead over the Florida Panthers in the Atlantic Division. Mitch Marner and William Nylander have really stepped up in Auston Matthews’ absence as the two lead the team with a combined 52 points. Nylander’s 14 goals are tied for the fourth most in the league while Marner’s 20 assists put him in seventh of the NHL. The Maple Leafs real strength is their goaltending. Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll have combined to allow just 2.48 GA/G which is the second lowest mark in the league. Stolarz is off to an elite start again this season as the goaltender is 7-3-2 with a .927 SV%. Toronto is set to play back-to-back road games against division rivals in Florida and Tampa Bay, and the Maple Leafs have struggled on the road this season going just 3-3-2 away from home.
Cold
Pittsburgh Penguins 2-8
This is just a dreadful time for Pittsburgh fans. After starting the season 3-2, the Penguins have gone just 4-10-4 and have lost six of their last seven games. The struggles in Pittsburgh are up and down the roster aside from Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. As a team, they are averaging just 2.52 GF/G which ranks 26th in the league while they rank last in the NHL in GA/G, allowing nearly four goals per game. Crosby (21) and Malkin (20) are the only two players on the roster to reach the 15 points mark and the two veterans account for nearly 30% of all the offense on the team. Over their last 10 games, the Penguins goalies have allowed 4.3 GA/G. There are a lot of issues going on with this organization.
St. Louis Blues 3-7
The St. Louis Blues have made the headlines for the NHL when they hired Jim Montgomery after he was let go from the Bruins. However, what was not covered is the cold stretch the Blues are currently in. They have won just three games in their last 10 games with two of those wins needing to go to overtime or later. Jordan Binnington is having his inconsistent play shine through again this season as he is allowing 3.04 GA/G on a .891 SV%. His backup Joel Hofer is not doing any better as he is allowing 3.23 GA/G through his seven appearances this season. However, the struggles extend to the offense as well as the Blues rank in the bottom third of the league in scoring, averaging just 2.48 GF/G this season. The Blues will need a lot more than Jim Montgomery to turn this ship around.
