With a solid sample size to study, let’s take a deep dive into the top money making squads so far this season ATS.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
Chicago Blackhawks 9-1
Despite managing just five wins on the year, the Blackhawks have been the best team ATS so far this season. After losing the first three games to start the season, the Blackhawks have since won five of their last seven games, picking up points in six of them. Their ability to keep a game close isn’t because of Connor Bedard and the offense, it is actually the dominance of Spencer Knight in the crease. Chicago ranks third in the league in GA/G as they have allowed 2.50 GA/G thus far. Knight has appeared in seven games so far and has allowed just 2.11 GA/G and has an elite .930 SV%. The offense has chipped in with some big games like an eight-goal performance against the Blues as they rank in the top half of the league with 3.30 GF/G. Bedard, Ryan Donato, and Frank Nazar have been goal scoring machines for the Blackhawks with three combining for 17 of the teams 33 goals. Chicago has certainly put together a solid two weeks of hockey.
Pittsburgh Penguins 8-2
The second hottest team at covering is another unexpected franchise. The Pittsburgh Penguins have covered eight of their last 10 games and have also won five of their last seven while carrying a seven-game point streak. The Penguins are tied with the New Jersey Devils for the top spot in the Metro Division and their +10-goal differential is tied for the second-best mark in the league. Pittsburgh finds themselves in the Top 10 in both scoring and GA/G as the offense is averaging 3.64 GF/G while Arturs Silovs and Tristan Jarry are allowing just 2.55 GA/G. Evgeni Malkin is off to a terrific start this season as he has a team best 16 points while he is also second in the league in assists with 13. Sidney Crosby is still dominating as he has 15 points already and is tied for second in the NHL with eight goals. The goaltending performance may fall out from beneath them, but the Penguins are money makers right now.
Cold
Toronto Maple Leafs 1-9
The post Mitch Marner Era has started in a rough way for the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have found themselves struggling to maintain any sort of momentum in the early stages of the year and they are the worst covering team in the league, doing so in just one contest thus far. While the offense seemingly hasn’t missed a beat without Marner, the goaltending has been atrocious. Toronto has allowed 3.82 GA/G this season which ranks 28th in the league while their .874 SV% ranks 29th. Anthony Stolarz has allowed 3.27 GA/G in his eight appearances while his backup, Cayden Primeau, has really struggled as he has allowed 4.30 GA/G in three appearances. The lone bright spot for Toronto so far is the fact that Matthew Knies has been able to produce at a high level, replacing the production lost with Marner.
Dallas Stars 2-8
The second worst team ATS is another playoff titan from last year in the Dallas Stars. The Stars have certainly been streaky since the start of the year. They won their first three games, lost their next four, and have now won their last three games. Dallas scored five goals in each of their first three contests but have since failed to score more than three over their last seven games. The Stars rank 23rd in the NHL as they are averaging just 2.80 GA/G to start the year. The depth issues are already showing in Dallas which is a huge cause for concern with a team who is in the midst of their winning window. Jim Nill needs to be creative and add some more scoring depth to keep his team at an elite level.
Moneyline
Hot
New Jersey Devils 8-2
The Devils lost the opening game of their season then they proceeded to win their next eight games. The offense has been relentless for New Jersey so far this season. They lead the league in scoring with a 3.90 GF/G while they are cashing in on 28.6% of their power play chances. Jack Hughes is tied for the league lead in goals with nine while he, Jesper Bratt, and Nico Hischier have reached double-digit points already this season. Hughes is joined by Bratt, Dawson Mercer, Connor Brown, Dougie Hamilton, and Timo Meier as Devils players with three or more goals already this season. This is a dangerous offensive team if they can stay healthy.
Utah Mammoth 8-2
Perhaps the biggest surprise on this list is the Utah Mammoth. They currently sit atop the Central Division with 16 points and are tied atop the league standings with eight wins. They have a +10-goal differential already and have not lost at home this season. They are averaging 3.64 GF/G while the goaltending also ranks inside the Top 10 as they are allowing just 2.73 GA/G. Nick Schmaltz has a team best 17 points with seven goals and 10 assists for the Mammoth. Dylan Guenther, Clayton Keller, Logan Cooley, and JJ Peterka all have double-digit points and Cooley’s eight goals leads the team and ranks second in the NHL. If Karel Vejmelka can continue his performance in the crease, then Utah will be a true playoff threat this season.
Cold
Calgary Flames 1-8-1
The lone bright spot to Calgary’s start to the season is they have made the decision very easy for their front office to hit the rebuild button. Last season seemed to be an anomaly, and this team is nowhere near ready to sustain a playoff caliber level of play. They have scored more than three goals in just two games this season as they ranked last in the league with a 2.09 GF/G mark. The goaltending hasn’t been any better. They are allowing 3.55 GA/G, and the teams -15 goal differential is tied for the worst mark in the league.
San Jose Sharks 2-6-2
Surprise surprise. The San Jose Sharks are back on the cold teams list. Unfortunately, while there is some promising talent on the roster, they are still bad. They lost the first six games of the season and have remained shaky since. Macklin Celebrini does have 16 points with six goals and 10 assists, and William Eklund is also performing well with 10 points. However, the goaltending is awful as they are allowing a league worst 4.60 GA/G. It looks like it will be another long season for the Sharks.
