NHL Betting: Hot and Cold Teams ATS and Moneyline

As we approach the 20-game mark of the season, there are some teams starting to fully establish themselves in the playoff picture. The Anaheim Ducks look like the biggest threat in the Western Conference, while the Boston Bruins have some newfound offense that has propelled them into second place in their division, and the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks lay claim to the two wild card spots in their respected conference thanks in large part to their young superstars. With all the noise and storylines to follow, let’s focus in on the teams making the most money, and the teams you should avoid.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
San Jose Sharks 9-1
Don’t look now, but the San Jose Sharks currently find themselves in a playoff spot. While we have not yet reached the 20-game mark on the season, the Sharks are starting to turn a corner and head back to relevancy. They have won six of their last seven games, are currently on a seven-game point streak, and they have mustered a +9-goal differential over their current four-game winning streak. More importantly, they have been real money makers in terms of covering. They have covered nine of their last 10 games, which is tied for the hottest stretch in the NHL. Over their last 10 games, they are averaging 3.3 GF/G, but what has stood out the most over their current hot streak is their goaltending, which is allowing just 2.3 GA/G. They have held opponents to just one score per game in each of their last four contests. Macklin Celebrini is tied for second in the NHL with 26 points, and the rest of the roster is starting to show some real offensive prowess. It is early, but don’t write off San Jose just yet.
Anaheim Ducks 9-1
The team that the Sharks are tied with are the Anaheim Ducks, who have also covered nine of their last 10 games. The Ducks have been the biggest surprise in hockey thus far. They have won seven of their last eight games, and the offense has been unstoppable. The Ducks are averaging 3.94 GF/G, which is the second most in the league, behind only the Colorado Avalanche. Over their current 10 game stretch, Anaheim is averaging 4.5 GF/G while their goaltending is holding opponents to 3.0 GA/G. The goaltending is the weaker link for this Ducks team as they rank 16th in the league, allowing 3.13 GA/G. Lukas Dostal is allowing just 2.69 GA/G, but Petr Mrazek has been atrocious in his three appearances this season. While some goaltending depth may be a point of emphasis at the deadline, the Ducks may also look to expand their offensive potential by adding a superstar skater to join Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier who both have 11 goals and a combined 46 points in 16 games. Anaheim is a legit contender this season, and the front office is going to buy in at the deadline.
Season Standings:
- Pittsburgh Penguins 14-3
- Boston Bruins 14-4
- Chicago Blackhawks 13-3
Cold
Edmonton Oilers 2-8
Edmonton has been the coldest team ATS over the last 10 games, as they have covered just twice in the last three weeks. It has been another slow start to the season for the Oilers. The offense has limped through its first 17 games, and the goaltending woes continue to pop up for the Oilers. A lot of the early season struggles have been away from home. In their own barn Edmonton is 5-1-2, but on the road, they are just 2-5-2 this season. The depth may be a big issue for this club. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl continue to dominate the ice, but when you go down the roster, the production from key depth pieces is missing. It also hurts that Oilers fans that the front office hasn’t addressed the goaltending issues. Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard have combined for a .860 SV%, and the team ranks 27th in GA/G (3.47 GA/G). Edmonton has turned the season around before, but there are some noticeable weaknesses on this year’s team.
St. Louis Blues 3-7
Another cold, and rather disappointing, team is the St. Louis Blues. Not only have they struggled ATS over the last 10, but they have also gained just eight points in their last 10 games. St. Louis finds themselves in 14th place in the Western Conference, and they have a -18-goal differential which is tied for the second worst mark in the NHL. The offense has disappeared. The Blues rank 24th in scoring as they are averaging just 2.76 GF/G, but the offense is far from the only issue. They also have a 70.5% PK% which ranks 29th in the league, and their 3.77 GA/G ranks 31st. Pius Suter is the only Blues skater to reach double-digit point production through the teams first 17 games. Brayden Schenn has just six points, while Pavel Buchnevich and Dylan Holloway have combined for just 15 points and six goals. To make matters worse, the goaltending has been abysmal. Jordan Binnington has allowed 3.21 GA/G, while posting a lowly .873 SV%. Behind him, Joel Hofer has allowed 4.05 GA/G and has a .865 SV%. The Blues do not look like a playoff team this season.
Season Standings:
- Edmonton Oilers 4-13
- Florida Panthers 4-12
- Toronto Maple Leafs 5-12
Money Line
Hot
Boston Bruins 8-2
There is no hotter team in the league than the Boston Bruins. Their offense has been rolling as of late, and they have won their last seven games. Over the course of this seven-game winning streak, Boston has scored 28 goals. Thanks to this hot stretch, the Bruins now rank sixth in the league in scoring as they are averaging 3.39 GF/G. They have a Top 10 special teams’ unit as they are cashing in on 25% of their man advantage opportunities, while killing off 81.2% of their opponents’ power play chances. The goaltending is still a glaring weakness, but the offense has done enough to put the Bruins in the win column and now in second place in the Atlantic Division.
Anaheim Ducks 8-2
There is not much else to add for the Ducks here. They know how to score, and a lot of their young talent has stepped up. Carlsson leads the way with 26 points while Gauthier and Troy Terry each of 20. It also helps when Chris Kreider has nine goals already, and rookie Beckett Sennecke has six goals and 11 points through the first 16 games of his career. Anaheim looks unstoppable.
Cold
Nashville Predators 2-6-2
Nashville continues to disappoint. Ever since blowing up their playoff caliber core, the rebuilding or retooling has continued to be a failure. Nashville has won just twice over their last 10 games, while picking up just six points during that span. They are currently struggling through a five-game losing streak where the offense is averaging less than 3.0 GF/G and the goaltending is allowing over 4.0 GA/G. The Predators rank 29th in the league in scoring as they are averaging a lowly 2.56 GF/G, while the goaltending ranks 30th as they allow 3.61 GA/G. Nashville is in for a long season, and we may see their few remaining big names be sent off to new homes by the trade deadline.
Calgary Flames 3-6-1
The Calgary Flames have been the second coldest team in the league over the last 10 games. They have picked up just seven points during this stretch, and they currently find themselves firmly in the basement. They have been held to just two goals over their past three games and have been shutout twice. Nazem Kadri is the only Flames player to have double-digit points on the season. Dustin Wolf is suffering from the Sophomore Slump as he is allowing 3.25 GA/G and has a 4-10-1 record through his 15 appearances so far. Calgary ranks last in the league in scoring, averaging just 2.06 GF/G. The Flames have made the decision easy for their front office. Expect them to be sellers at the deadline and fall well below their projected season point total.
