NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 11/20/2025

As we approach the quarter mark of the season, let’s take another look at which teams are making the most money relative to the game total. The top three teams in scoring are not featured on the list, while the top two goaltending units are also absent from the list. Vancouver has been on an absolute tear, picking up 10 overs in as many games, while the teams falling on the south side of the game total might surprise you. With all that and more, let’s crunch some numbers.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Vancouver Canucks 10-0
If you like high scoring games, then you should follow the Vancouver Canucks. They have averaged well over 7.0 GA/G over their previous 10 games and have not seen a game fall below the game total since before Halloween. In their last game against Florida, there were a combined 13 goals in Vancouver’s 8-5 loss. All the goal scoring isn’t exactly positive for the Canucks. The offense ranks in the middle of the league, averaging 3.10 GF/G. Quinn Hughes has just one goal, though Keifer Sherwood’s 12 goals are amongst the league leaders. The abysmal goaltending is why the Canucks find themselves in high-scoring games. They rank 30th in the league allowing 3.67 GA/G. Kevin Lankinen is allowing 3.44 GA/G in his 11 starts this season. Thatcher Demko is doing a bit better than that, but is still allowing 2.80 GA/G with a .903 SV% in his 10 appearances. Until the goaltending improves, keep hitting the over in Canucks games.
Montreal Canadiens 9-1
While the Montreal Canadiens have struggled lately, losing their last four games, they have been over machines over their last 10 contests. Five of their previous 10 games have extended to overtime or beyond, with all five of those games hitting the over. Before the losing streak, the offense was performing quite well. However, over their last six games Montreal has scored just six goals. Injuries can be thanked for some of the declining offensive production, but the drop off is noteworthy. The goaltending has continued to be a struggle for this team as well. Sam Montembeault has struggled once again this season. He has allowed 3.56 GA/G in his 11 appearances and has an atrocious .858 SV%. His backup, Jakub Dobes, has performed better in his nine appearances as he has allowed 2.71 GA/G with a .898 SV%. Montreal ranks sixth in the league in scoring and is allowing the eighth-most goals per game, that’s quite a good pairing if you like to cash in on the overs.
Toronto Maple Leafs 8-2
It is no surprise to see the Maple Leafs on this list. They are tied with the Canucks for the most overs in the league thus far (16). The scoring depth is a strength for this Toronto team after losing Mitch Marner this offseason. William Nylander has stepped up his offensive production and leads the team with 27 points on nine goals and 18 assists. John Tavares leads the team with 11 goals while Auston Matthews and Nylander have nine, Matthew Knies, Nicholas Robertson, and Bobby McMann have five, and Toronto has five other players who have tallied at least three goals so far this season. The Leafs rank fourth in the league in scoring, despite having one of the worst power-play numbers in the league. It helps their overs pursuit when they have the second-worst goaltending unit in the NHL. They are allowing 3.70 GA/G and have already used four different goalies through their first 20 games.
Season Leaders:
- Vancouver Canucks 16-4-1
- Toronto Maple Leafs 16-4
- Montreal Canadiens 13-4-2
Under
San Jose Sharks 2-8
Don’t look now, but the San Jose Sharks have won seven of their last 10 games and have picked up points in eight of them. This hot streak can be widely attributed to some much-improved goaltending. San Jose has allowed just 1.90 GA/G over their last 10 games. Both Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic are now under 3.0 GA/G on the year and both players showcase a SV% above .900. If both players can continue to improve on their marks this season, San Jose might find themselves much closer to playoff action that many thought heading into the season. It does help the under cause that they are averaging less than three goals per game (2.95 GF/G). Despite their impressive streak, they have scored more than three goals just twice over the last 10 games. Who knows if Nedeljkovic and Askarov are capable of continuing this dominant stretch, but I wouldn’t count on it for too long.
New York Islanders 3-7
The Islanders have won five of their last six games and now find themselves holding onto the top wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. One reason for this is the emergence of Matthew Schaefer, who has now, tallied seven goals and 15 total points which ranks fourth on the team. Bo Horvat has been scoring at a ridiculous pace as he has a team-best 13 goals. Emil Heineman has also been a surprise goal-scoring-weapon as he is second on the team with nine. The goaltending has been ok, showing flashes of elite-level play. However, the Islanders are not a typical under team and one team to avoid when discussing game total.

New York Rangers 3-7
The Rangers, on the other hand, lead the league in unders this season with it happening in 67% of their games. This is not a deep Rangers team like we have seen in years past and the aging Artemi Panarin has left the team desiring more star power. The offense ranks 30th in the league in scoring as they are averaging a mere 2.48 GF/G. In addition to the poor offensive numbers so far this season, the Rangers netminding is the third best unit in the NHL. They are holding opponents to just 2.48 GA/G. Igor Shesterkin has allowed just 2.43 GA/G in his 16 appearances so far, and Jonathan Quick has been elite in his limited action allowing just 1.42 GA/G and posting a .951 SV%.
Season Leaders:
- New York Rangers 7-14
- Chicago Blackhawks 7-11-1
- Nashville Predators 8-12
