Weekly Q&A with Doc's Sports Expert Handicapper Raphael Esparza
by Doc's Sports - 4/1/2014
For well over four decades, Doc's Sports has remained at the top of our game in the sports selection business by providing a very loyal customer base with a steady stream of winners for all the major sports. As the college basketball season comes to a close, we are proud to say it was one of our best seasons on record. We attribute a great deal of our success in a very competitive industry to the ability to surround ourselves with some of the best handicappers in the business.
One such expert handicapper that also remains at the top of his game is Raphael Esparza. While he has been with Doc's for close to eight years, he cut his teeth in this game during a long and illustrious career working behind the counter of some of the biggest sportsbooks in Las Vegas. Raphael became best known as The Vegas Informer as he ascended to the top of his field by holding the highly prestigious position of Director of the Race and Sports Book for MGM Grand's Aria.
This past summer he retired from the sportsbook industry in order to devote all of his time working with some key Las Vegas insiders that know the sports betting industry inside and out. Raphael continues to hone this "inside edge" as part of his overall handicapping efforts. Unlike many handicappers in this industry, he has become known for offering selections for a wide array of sporting events, including the WNBA, horse racing, boxing, professional tennis and soccer leagues all around the globe.
Doc's Sports decided to set up an ongoing weekly Q&A with Raphael to offer our loyal readers access to this "inside edge" by covering some of the hottest trending topics in the sports betting industry today. What better source can you find than someone that is well connected in the undisputed sports gambling capital of the world? The following is this week's discussion.
Doc's Sports : We have been talking about this year's NCAA Men's Tournament since the four First Round play-in games, so now it is time to turn our attention to the first of two Final Four games. Florida has been dominant this entire tournament, so what kind of chance do you give Connecticut in this Saturday's opener?
RE: Connecticut's run has been impressive to say the least, but I do not see them getting past the Gators. Florida has been the most consistent team all season long, and it has continued to prove this in its first four tournament games. That being said, if the spread in this matchup does creep up to seven points, I would have to consider a play on the Huskies.
Doc's Sports: Kentucky's run to the Final Four is not all that surprising given the overall talent on this team. Do you see the Wildcats moving on to the title game, or does Wisconsin have what it takes to bring an end to their impressive run?
RE : Wisconsin is more than capable of winning this game, but it is going to need another big night from Frank Kaminsky on both ends of the court. If he can neutralize Kentucky's Julius Randle (which I think he can) then the Badgers are going to the national title game.
Doc's Sports: Now that we know which two teams you have advancing to next Monday night's title game, which one is cutting down the nets when all the smoke clears?
RE: Like I have been saying all along, Florida remains the most balanced and overall talented team in the country, so there is no reason to get off the bandwagon now.
Doc's Sports : Last week you made the correct call on Indiana beating Miami in the first of two showdowns to close out the NBA's regular season. The Pacers followed up that big win with three straight losses, so how much trouble is this team really in?
RE: I am truly stunned just how far this team has regressed over the past few weeks. Not only are the Pacers having major issues scoring, but their defense is starting to wear down as well. Unless they can turn things around over the next two weeks, they will struggle against anyone they face in the playoffs.
Doc's Sports : A new MLB season is underway, and since we have already discussed your thoughts on the NL East and NL Central, let's turn our attention to the NL West. Most sportbooks have the Los Angeles Dodgers as not only heavy favorites to win the division but the top favorite to win the World Series this season. What is your take on this team?
RE: Los Angeles is clearly the cream of the crop in the NL West, but it will still need its bullpen to step things up to be the best team in the National League. Dodgers' ace Clayton Kershaw has already missed a start with a sore back, so that is another issue that bears watching. The key to winning a World Series for any of the better MLB teams is keeping your biggest stars on the field and off the DL.
