NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 11/29/2023
Time for our next look at who has been on either side of the game totals over the last 10 games. This article will feature 10 teams, as there is a five-way tie for the highest Over percentage and a four-way tie for the second highest Under percentage. Of the 10 teams, there is only one with a percentage higher than 70%. Let’s take a look at where the money is being made if you are playing the game total.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
We have five teams that are tied with the best Over percentage for the last 10 games, but the biggest surprises on this list are Columbus and Boston, as those teams lack offensive power and the Bruins netminding is so good.
Toronto Maple Leafs – O%- 70%
The Maple Leafs have been playing a little better of late, as they have gone 6-3-1 overall over their last 10 contests. The Over has hit in seven of their last 10 games. However, the hot stretch may be sputtering as the Under has hit in only one of their last three contests after hitting in their previous six of seven games. The offense has been much better in this stretch, as they have averaged 3.7 GF/G, which is much better than their season average of 3.3 GF/G. Joseph Woll had a four-game stretch (in the last 10 games) where he struggled big time as the netminder and allowed 21 goals, which was a big contributor to the high Over percentage during the team’s last 10.
Vancouver Canucks – O%- 70%
This should hardly come as a surprise to anyone, as this is perhaps the most offensively loaded team in the league. J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson, and Quinn Hughes all have 30 or more points on the year, while Brock Boeser and Filip Hronek are both in the 20s. In this 10-game stretch, backup goalie Casey DeSmith appeared in three games, and the over has hit in all three. In fact, the Over has a 100% hit rate when DeSmith has been in the net this season. This team will likely carry a high Over percentage throughout the rest of the season as they average just south of four goals a game. Vancouver is currently 2nd in the NHL in Over percentage, with the over hitting in 14 of their 21 contests.
Boston Bruins – O%- 70%
Believe it or not, the Bruins are currently riding a three-game losing streak and have lost four of their last five. The Over has hit in each of those four losses. In the last 10 games, both netminders have struggled, with Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman giving up five or more goals four times (each goalie is accountable for two). However, the offense has been a bit better than normal, and the B’s have recorded four or more goals in five of the last 10. The Over has hit in seven of the last eight games, but this is a hard trend to back with the (normally) elite goaltending and average offense.
Seattle Kraken – O%- 70%
Seattle has faced issues with their goaltending all season, as they are allowing nearly 3.5 GA/G. Their ability to stretch the game to overtime has also been a contributing factor to this high Over percentage in their last 10 games. The Kraken have seen overtime three times in this stretch, and the over has hit in all three of those games. This Over trend, like Boston, has really picked up lately, as the Over has hit in six of their last seven games. Another thing to keep your eye on is the over has hit in the Kraken’s last four road games, and Seattle has three straight road games upcoming.
Columbus Blue Jackets – O%- 70%
This team making the high Over percentage list is a huge surprise but does not imply positive connotation. The Blue Jackets are coming off a nine-game losing streak. Of the seven Overs, in the last 10, only two of them have been Columbus wins. In their nine-game skid, the over hit seven times. The goaltending was absolutely atrocious throughout that skid. However, the netminding is not awful, and they will get back on top of things a bit. In fact, the Blue Jackets have allowed only six goals in their last three contests. Overall, the Over has hit in 12 of the Blue Jackets 22 games this season. I do not expect this team to have many more 70% stretches.
Under
Los Angeles Kings – U%- 80%
The only team on this list to showcase a percentage of over 70% is the dominating Los Angeles Kings. The Kings lead the NHL in GF/G and are the only club to average four a game, so it may be a bit surprising to see them with such a high Under percentage. Well, if you look at their current five-game winning streak, the Kings have allowed only five goals. And if you look at the last 10, they have allowed only 1.60 GA/G. Complete domination. Cam Talbot has been absolutely lights out for the Kings this season and Pheonix Copley has been a nice compliment during the last 10, contributing to the Under.
Philadelphia Flyers – U%- 70%
It is not surprising to see the Flyers on this list. They have one of the highest Under percentages in the league, with the Under hitting in 14 of the teams 22 games this season. The Flyers have been one of the most inconsistent teams in terms of putting it all together. One night the offense looks great, but the goaltending is off, or the goaltending looks great, but they get little help. The Under has hit int their last four games with an average game total of 3.75 goals. Carter Hart’s name may be synonymous with the Under, as the netminder appeared in five games, over their last 10, and the Under has hit in four of those contests.
Pittsburgh Penguins – U%- 70%
The Under has hit in the last six games for the Penguins and the Pens have gone 2-4 in that stretch. Tristan Jarry may join Hart on the list of synonyms for Under, as the netminder has supported the south side of the game a total of five times in the last 10 games and in 10 of the Penguins 13 overall games where the Under has hit. Alex Nedeljkovic has been an incredible backup for Jarry as he has allowed just 2.27 GA/G this season and contributed the other two Under totals in the last 10. On the other side of things, Pittsburgh is not a high scoring team as the team has only recorded more than four goals only three times this season. This is a team to follow if you like playing Under totals.
Washington Capitals – U%- 70%
Washington is on an absolute tear. They have shot up the standings and find themselves in the playoff mix. However, this is the Iowa Hawkeyes of the NHL. No offense, but they find a way to win. They average 2.33 GF/G, which ranks 31st in the NHL. Their goaltending has been incredible as they rank 8th in the NHL in GA/G, allowing just 2.78 goals. The Caps Under has hit 13 times in their 18 games. They are the only team with a winning record that has yet to reach 60 goals, and they have 44…
Vegas Golden Knights – U%- 70%
The Knights mirror the Bruins path to success. Great netminding, average offense. Vegas gets it done and wins close games. Vegas ranks 18th in the NHL in GF/G, averaging a mere 3.09 goals a game, while their goaltending ranks 2nd in the league in GA/G allowing just 2.44 goals a game. Their offense is currently in the midst of a cold stretch as well, as the Knights have only averaged 2.2 GF/G over their last 10 games, and they have been shutout three times in that stretch. The Under has hit in 14 of the 23 Vegas games this season.
