NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 12/3/2025

As we enter the final month of 2025, we have a solid sample size of each team around the league. Detroit has proven themselves to be a real contender, Chicago and San Jose might actually have some playoff potential, and the Anaheim Ducks have finally exited the dreary “rebuild” phase. Trends have been established, and injuries make it easier to back or fade a team. Winnipeg has been struggling since they lost Connor Hellebuyck, Montreal doesn’t have a reliable netminder, the Islanders have no offensive depth. Let’s jump into how all three of those storylines can make you some money, as well as looking at other established trends and stories to further boost your winning ways.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Montreal Canadiens 8-2
The last 10 games have not been a kind stretch for the Montreal Canadiens. That said they are just 3-6-1, and they have lost back-to-back games in which they have allowed five or more goals. With that being said, they have been hammering out Overs. The biggest piece of the puzzle for Montreal Overs is the weak goaltending. Over the last 10 games, Montreal has allowed 4.5 GA/G, including 12 in their last two games. Sam Montembeault and Jakub Dobes have struggled mightily this season. Montembeault has allowed 3.61 GA/G in 14 appearances, while Dobes has allowed 3.22 GA/G. The two have combined to post a lowly .875 SV%, and Montreal ranks 31st in the league, allowing 3.60 GA/G. Not only does their goaltending rank near the bottom of the league, but its offense is near the top. Montreal ranks seventh in the NHL in scoring, averaging 3.36 GF/G. They have a top five power play unit thanks to Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky (10 combined PP goals), and it helps when you have Cole Caufield scoring at will. Montreal is a dream Overs team until their goaltending improves.
Winnipeg Jets 7-3
Similarly to the Canadiens, the Jets have not had a successful stretch over their last 10 games. They have lost five of their last six contests and have fallen to sixth in the Central Division. Unfortunately for the Jets, Hellebuyck went down with a lengthy injury last month, and the team has not been able to find success without him. Since his injury, the Jets have allowed 3.83 GA/G. Eric Comrie has allowed 3.13 GA/G in his 10 appearances, and while that doesn’t appear to be totally abysmal, he has hit the over in seven of his 10 starts so far this season. The Jets’ offense isn’t elite by any means, but they are still averaging over three goals per game, and they are cashing in on 22.1% of their power play chances. It helps that the Jets have three players who have already reached the double-digit goal mark, as Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor both have 13 goals, and Gabriel Vilardi has 11. Once Hellebuyck returns, the Over may not be a good play, but if Comrie is in the crease, take the over.
Vancouver Canucks 7-3
To round out the common theme for the Overs hitters on this list, the Canucks have also struggled over their previous 10 games. While they have hit the over in seven of their last 10, they have posted a mere 2-6-2 record, including six losses in their last seven. Goaltending has been a huge issue for the Canucks this season. They are dead last in the NHL in GA/G, allowing 3.63 GA/G. They have already tried four different netminders to this point in the season with no success. Thatcher Demko has been the best of the quartet, as he is allowing 2.80 GA/G, and he is the only goalie with an SV% over .900 (.903). Around him, Kevin Lankinen has allowed 3.48 GA/G and has just four wins in his 15 appearances, Nikita Tolopilo has allowed 3.56 GA/G in his appearances, while Jin Patera allowed seven goals in his lone appearance. The goaltending is the sole reason why Vancouver is second in the NHL in Overs this season.
Season Standings:
- Toronto Maple Leafs 18-6-1
- Vancouver Canucks 18-7-1
- Montreal Canadiens 17-5-2
Under
New York Islanders 2-8
The common theme for this article is that the teams appearing in this piece have struggled mightily. The Islanders have gone just 5-4-1 over their last 10 games, but the wins have been the result of elite goaltending, while the losses have been reflective of a lack of offensive potential. The Islanders rank 11th in the NHL in goals allowed, as they are allowing 2.78 GA/G. Ilya Sorokin has allowed 2.57 GA/G in his 18 appearances, and David Rittich has allowed 2.61 GA/G in his backup role. As for the offense, they rank 24th in scoring as they are averaging 2.85 GF/G. They also rank 31st in the PP%, cashing in on just 13.3% of their man advantage opportunities. Bo Horvat has stepped up his game this season, as their star player has 16 goals through 27 games, and Matthew Schaefer has had a productive rookie season. However, it does not help when you lose Kyle Palmieri for the year, further exposing your lack of depth. As long as Sorokin continues at this level, the Islanders are a surefire Under team.
Minnesota Wild 2-8
Finally, a team on this list that has done well over their last 10 games. The Minnesota Wild have picked up points in 12 straight games, winning 10 of those contests. They haven’t done this with high-level scoring, but with elite goalie play from the best goaltending duo in the NHL. Over the last 10 games, Minnesota has allowed just 1.5 GA/G and has shut out their opponents four times in their last 11 games. Filip Gustavsson has allowed 2.74 GA/G in his 17 appearances, while Jesper Wallstedt has allowed 1.74 GA/G and is 8-0-2 through his first 10 games of the season. These frequent low-scoring affairs is mainly caused by the goaltending, but it does help that the offense has been scoring just 2.78 GF/G. However, Minnesota is just one offensive piece away from taking off, so don’t expect this team to frequent this list too much over the remainder of the season.
Seattle Kraken 2-8
Seattle has seen the south side of the game total in eight of its last 10 games. Over that stretch, the team is 4-4-2 and they have lost three straight. A big reason for this slump is the lack of offense. They have been shut out twice during their current three-game skid, and the offense has averaged just 2.1 GF/G over their last 10 contests. Seattle’s offense is going to be a huge problem for this fringe playoff squad. They rank 31st in scoring (2.46 GF/G), and their 16.7% PP% ranks 21st. They do not have a single player on their roster that has hit the 20-point mark yet this season, and they do not have a single player that has reached the 10+ goal milestone on the season. Jaden Schwartz is the team leader in points with 15, and his eight goals are tied for the team lead with Jordan Eberle. If you like low-scoring games, you will love watching this atrocious offense, and it’s even sweeter when you realize Seattle’s 2.63 GA/G is sixth in the league. Seattle is a strong candidate to lead the league in Unders this season.
