Wednesday night, Jesse Chavez gets the call for the Oakland Athletics as they take on Vidal Nuno and the New York Yankees. Chavez makes his 12th start as Nuno makes his 9th start and 12th appearance. 

Jesse Chavez lost his 2nd straight game in his last start and that dropped his record to 4 – 3 with an ERA of 2.78.  In that outing, Chavez allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in 6 innings. He walked 2 while striking out 3. Last season, Chavez went 2 - 4 with a save and a 3.92 ERA in 35 relief appearances.

In 2013, Chavez picked up a win in his only relief appearance against the Yankees.  In that appearance, he allowed a hit in 5.2 innings of work.  Only 3 of the Yankees have hits off of Chavez and in 21 at-bats, the team has just 5 hits and a home run.

Vidal Nuno saw his record fall to 1 - 2 with a 5.48 ERA after taking a loss in his last outing.  In that start, Nuno gave up 4 runs on 7 hits (including 3 home runs) in 6.2 innings. He didn’t issue any walks while striking out 6.  Nuno gave up just 2 homers last season as he went 1 – 2 with a 2.25 ERA in 3 starts and 2 relief appearances during his rookie campaign.

In 2013, Nuno didn’t face the A’s and he has no experience against their lineup.  If he studies the scouting report and gets some advice from the rest of the pitching staff, he should get an expectation of what he might face form the A’s.
