Tuesday night, the Washington Nationals and Gio Gonzalez will take on the Houston Astros and Jarred Cosart. Both pitchers will be making their 6th starts of the season.

Gio Gonzalez only went 5 innings in his last start after his night was cut short due to tightness in his shoulder.  But by all indications, he should be able to make the start in this one.  Before he left his last start, he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Gonzalez didn’t get the decision and that left him at 3 – 1 with an ERA of 3.00.  Last season, Gonzalez was 11 – 8 with an ERA of 3.36 in 32 starts.

In 2013, Gonzalez didn’t face the Astros and he only has experience against five players on the Houston roster.  Dexter Fowler has the most success against Gonzalez with a double, a homer and an RBI in 6 at-bats.

Jarred Cosart comes into this one with a record of 1 - 2 and an ERA of 6.12.  Cosart pitched to a no decision in his last start after going 6.2 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits (including a home run) with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts.  During his rookie campaign last season, Cosart went 1 -1 with an ERA of 1.95 in 10 starts. 

In 2013, Cosart didn’t get a start against the Nationals and he has yet to face anyone on the Washington roster.  With some help from the scouting report, Cosart should be able to handle the Nationals’ lineup.
