At Doc's we don't see this as trash basketball, we see this as a huge opportunity to make money...on trash basketball. Each day during the basketball season is an opportunity to make valuable and profitable predictions

What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

3-Unit Play Take Golden State +4 over Houston (7:30 p.m. EST, Wednesday April 30)
The Warriors have lots of postseason experience and they should be able to challenge for the win here. Houston looks like a team that is not ready to be a Championship caliber squad, and they will fold under the pressure tonight. The Warriors really took control of the momentum in this series and they know how to handle a close out game. We think this one goes down to the wire and that experience could put Golden State over the top.
4-Unit Play Take Minnesota +6 over LA Lakers (10 p.m. EST, Wednesday April 30)
We have liked the Wolves all series and think they will challenge for the win to close this one out. They match up well with the Lakers and they have now won five of the last seven meetings. The West is so competitive this season that it is crucial to close series out as soon as possible for extra rest and injury avoidance. Minnesota has an elite defense, which they will lean on here. The Lakers are a bit overrated, and we think this line is very public leaning.

6-Unit Play. Take #509 Golden State (+4) Houston (7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 30)

Warriors have been the better team in 3 of first 4 games with only win by Rockets coming when Butler went out early in game 2. This is going to be very close game 4 and just can’t see it being outside of a field goal. If anything we would lean GSW moneyline if were taking outright so giving us +4 feels very safe. Take Golden State Plus the points to cover this spread.

3-Unit Play. Take ‘Over’ 209.5 Minnesota at LA Lakers (10 p.m., Wednesday, April 30)

The Lakers are either going to make a historic comeback or head into an offseason of Will Lebron retire or comeback, what happened with the Luka trade, etc. etc. They have not been able to finish in a couple of these losses and will be in the mix tonight to send this series back to Minnesota for game 6. The problem for LA is the Ant Edwards is fearless and appears to be the next superstar in the league, so they had better bring their best game of the Luka era tonight. The Over is the smart play in Los Angeles tonight.

7-Unit Play. #514. Take Los Angeles Lakers -5.5 over Minnesota Timberwolves (Wednesday @ 10pm est)

Note, 8-2 in the NBA Playoffs, let's make it 9-2 here as we have won 14 of 16 NBA Playoffs so far. We just don't think the Lakers lose this game, at home in elimination with a new coach like JJ Reddick. Honestly, the Lakers could be up 3-1 at this point and every bit of angry, frustration and flat out just irritation will be taken out here by the Lakers and we love for them to be absolutely fired up here and we do not believe whatsoever that the bench for Minnesota can step up here like they have in the past. There is absolutely no reason why the Lakers should have lost the last game to Minnesota, it was a monumental let down. We love the Lakers here, bounce-back, Lebron on a bounce-back too as he didn't take a bunch of shots last game and if there was a game the Lakers bench comes through, it will be here and now.

4-Unit Play - #514 Los Angeles -5.5-110 over Minnesota (Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 10:00pm ET)

Take Los Angeles ATS as my top NBA pick for Wednesday. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I really like Los Angeles in this must win situation at home. I do expect Los Angeles to step up defensively in this game after allowing 116 points in each of their last two games. Keep in mind Los Angeles did hold Minnesota to just 85 points in their last home game back on April 22nd. Los Angeles has held opponents to shooting just 45.4% against them at home this season including just 34.1% from beyond the arc which ranks 5th best defensively in the NBA holding opponents to just 109.9 points per game against them. 4-Unit Play: Take 513 T-Wolves +5.5 over Lakers (10 p.m., Wed., April 30)

The Lakers don't have a rim protector since shipping Anthony Davis to Dallas and they're paying for it against the T-Wolves. Lakers' HC J.J. Reddick has done a better job than I thought he would when he first got the job but you can't leave it up to the players asking his starting-five if they could play an entire second half without a break. That was a rookie mistake in Game-4. There have been three consistencies through the first four games of this series. One: The Lakers are having a rough time from the offensive perimeter. Two: Minnesota is playing a stingy brand of defense and their length is bothering Los Angeles. Three: The benches. Minnesota's bench has out-scored the Lakers bench 112-51. LeBron and Luka will get theirs in this game. But I don't like the Laker bench and the team is wearing down, averaging just 17 points per 4th quarter in this series. 4-Unit Play - [513] Minnesota Timberwolves +6 -110 over Los Angeles Lakers (04/30 | 10:00PM EST) The Lakers are down 3-1 and haven't been this high on the spread all series. What gives? They were -4.5 in Game 1, and -5.5 in Game 2. They've allowed 117, 116, and 116 in three of the last four while struggling to gel on the offensive end. Timberwolves are playing with house money and should play free. Like them to at least keep within the number; if not win outright.

Houston returns home for this must win game five battle versus Golden State. I made the Rockets favored by -5.5 in this one so decent line value here in this contest. Nothing went right for the Rockets in game four as they missed an incredible amount of easy shots and free throws in the 109-106 loss to the Warriors.

Take Houston in this one minus the points.

Houston has shown to be a lot sneakier than expected. Not only this season, but it's been displayed here as we approach game 5 of this potential 7-game set. Golden State leads the series 3-1, and now it's do-or-die time for Houston. Houston was a stellar 29-12 at home, and Golden State went just 24-17 on the road. I believe Houston gets it done tonight, bulldozes offensively, and not only wins this game but also covers our 4-point differential.

7 Unit Play: Take #513 MIN Timberwolves (+5.5) over LA Lakers (-110) (10:00p.m, Wednesday, April 30th)

We have game five here tonight in Los Angeles. The Minnesota Timberwolves are leading this series, sitting at 3-1. With a win tonight, they could finish the Lakers' season here tonight. Everyone in the world is going to have their money on Luka and LeBron here tonight. But other than game two, this Minnesota Timberwolves team has looked way better in the series. They’re much deeper than these Lakers. If the Lakers and Luke with James don’t combine for 50 or 60 tonight, these Timberwolves are going to take this game outright from them. Yes, this is the season on the line for the Lakers and Luke and James are going to step up tonight for the Lakers. In the last game in Minnesota, Anthony Edwards completely went off, scoring 43 points in that three-point win. No question Edwards loves to play these Lakers when the lights are big. Well the Timberwolves have a chance to send the Lakers packing at home tonight. It will not surprise me if the Timberwolves come out tonight looking to end this series the way Edwards is playing it. I don’t see this game getting out of hand here tonight. All the pressure is going to be on the Lakers. While the Timberwolves can play free with their athletic ability here tonight. This is going to be a very competitive game here tonight. I love having these points in my back pocket with Edwards for a chance to put down the Lakers here tonight.
