In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the Montreal Canadiens were able to avoid elimination by beating the New York Rangers 7-4 at home and narrowed their lead to 3-2 in the series. The team statistics were actually pretty similar in the game, but what hurt the Rangers the most was that they were only able to convert one of their seven power play opportunities.
Alex Galchenyuk scored a power-play goal early in the first period to give the Canadiens a 1-0 lead. Derek Stepan tied it up midway through the period, but Tomas Plekanec restored the hosts' lead not long after that.
Max Pacioretty and Rene Bourque each scored for Montreal within the first seven minutes of the second period to give them a 4-1 advantage, but the Rangers scored the next three through Rick Nash, Stepan and Chris Kreider to tie it up. Bourque scored the last goal of the period off of assists by Dale Weise and Lars Eller.
Bourque completed his hat trick at the 6:33 mark of the third period, then David Desharnais finished off the scoring by converting a shorthanded goal midway through the period.
Montreal defenseman Andrei Markov had three assists in the win, while Lars Eller and Dale Weise had two assists apiece. Canadiens goaltender Dustin Tokarski made 23 saves on the night.
New York netminder Henrik Lundqvist stopped just 15 of Montreal's 19 shots on goal.
